If the solid white line in the middle of the road is on your side then it is illegal to cross it for overtaking etc. I have two questions to ask:-

1. If there is a car parked on this road (eg driver on mobile) where do you stand? Stop behind him or cross the solid line to get passed him. I normally cross the line to get around the idiot and therefore breaking the law.

2. What would you do in the same situation if there is a police car behind you?

You expect police to do something but i have seen them turn a blind eye to numerous motoring offences Read more

I crossed one this morning to pass a bus taking on passengers.

hello

i'm new to all of this but seem to have a common problem with users of this forum. Anti Pollution light. Difference is i have 2L petrol xsi whereas most of you with the same problem have diesels.

My car has 43k on the clock, just been serviced & had new coil pack but still light is on. Any suggestions? Could it be oxy sensor? i'm wanting to sell the car but would like to get rid of the light beforehand.

cheers

As said elesewhere; the AP light is just a generic warning that there's a code stored - one of 3000. Could be nothing much, [cat efficiency faults are the big thing on those] or...?

Getting the code[s] read is the only way to know. Most garages have access to the kit.

The ( original) radio works as normal with no lights on and always has done.
It has developed an intermitent fault.
Ignition switch to AUX and the radio works to spec.
When the lights are switched on, all the FM channels and the AM are very very distorted.
This is prior to turning the ignition switch beyond AUX.
The fault remains for some days so it survives turning the engine on and off / removing the ignition key.

The fault occured some weeks ago and then corrected itself. It has now returned.
There has been no messing with any of the electrics to provoke the fault and I have unscrewed and rescrewed the roof aerial ( that was replaced with a pukka Toyota one about three years ago) .

Haynes was not published when the car was bought (Toyotas do not go wrong?) so I have not looked at a wiring diagram but I am more than a little baffled at where to start.
My instinct says maybe the column mounted light switch but waggling it has not cured the problem. Read more

When you say fm channels & am distorted, is the fault there on tape/cd aswell? sounds like a fault on the earthing side of the light circuit, what could try, remove the tape deck, test for the light feed at the multi plug, disconnect it and see what happens.

Quick straw poll please - given fixed budget and a 13-year old (1.6 Nissan petrol) engine that has clocked well in excess of 100K would you think it better to make frequent changes of cheap oil or less-frequent changes of good oil? Read more

Andrew-T

That's an interesting point - who knows better, the makers of the engine or the makers of the oil? If they differ, who is right, and will it matter much after 100K miles? Do car makers' handbooks give info designed for people who want to keep cars indefinitely, or just the first 6 years or so? Or are they more concerned with minimising cost for fleet owners?

Hi, I have an Audi 80 H reg. Recently, I was having stating problems and eventually it wouldn't start at all - the fuel pump had given up. I replaced this with an aftermarket pump, but now still have stating problems both hot or cold. It takes about three long cranks of the ignition switch to start. Once started it runs fine.

When I switch the ignition on I can hear the pump run for a few seconds to 'prime' the system..

Any ideas welcome

Wow - I would never have found that!

It is an AAD whatever that is.

can you help ? I am buying a 2.0 Mondeo ghia 04 63k ml on clock full history I am paying £4000. is there anything I should be looking out for ? Read more

I see from your profile that you are new to the site. If so you may not be aware of the "car by car" tab above. Well worth a look. Don't be put off by the long list on the Mondeo, there is a strong following among HJ regulars for its being a good buy. The main things to check seem to be body rust (mixed views in previous threads as to prevalence and seriousness) and the cost of clutch change.

Fancy a Grand Scenic, after reading Car-by-car, I've been put off the diesel with EGR valve, and associated modern diesel engine problems. Is the petrol a better buy, would be for low mileage per annum (school run + annual hols) so MPG not too important.
My neighbours had 4 with little problems but all of them petrols, thoughts anyone?? Read more

We have recently purchased a 3 year old Grand Scenic 1.6vvt petrol.

The car is great with loads of space, lots of cubby holes and good seating position.

I think the 1.6 engine is a bit weedy with very little mid-range torque. You really have to work it to get it to go. However as ours is mostly used as SWMBO's runaround this isn't really a problem. We have used it for long trips and once you have it wound up on the motorway will quite happily cruise at or above the limit. I have driven it 520 miles in a day with no ill effects.

Economy wise we get 35mpg running around the lanes, mostly short trips with lots of stop-starts for tractors etc and 40mpg on a run.

My dad ran one and averaged over 42mpg, but he drives for economy. He now runs a 1.5 DCi which is noisier than our petrol but gets 53mpg in his hands.

Cost wise we paid just £3,525 for a 3 year old Expression with 22k miles and FSH at auction. Dealer have these cars for around £5k.

The equivalent diesel would have been well over a grand dearer.

Overall I would say that if performance isn't a priority then go for the 1.6 but I would like to try a two litre which would probably suit the car better.

I've read a few disappointing reviews of the A4 3.0 Quattro, in B7 form. Would a 2005-6 A4 Avant 3.0 Quattro be a reasonable buy? I'm looking for an estate, but don't need masses of space, and want something more exciting to drive than my current Mk 4 Golf estate.
I've seen fairly low mile A4 3.0 Quattro Avants around £18,000, which is around what I'm looking to pay. Would a new Octavia Estate (either 4x4 or VRS) be a better bet? I'm basically looking for an interesting, fun to drive car with reasonable space and happen to like estates. I don't desperately need 4wd, but wouldn't mind having it.
Any advice very welcome! Read more

The Oci would come with a 3 year warranty and a decent dealer.
