Has anyone got any help or advice they can offer me with this strange problem?

Today, whilst driving at speed, a noise started above my head which at first sounded like hail stones periodically hitting the roof. Then it became more persistent, but only at speed.

By the time I got home, it was clear that it sounds like a cable loom flapping about between the roof lining and the roof.

Does anyone know anything of this? Is there an easy way to remedy this? How does the roof lining come down?

I don't want to poke about too much in there, as i am assuming the cables will feed the side airbags etc..??

Also, why would this "flapping" only happen at speed? How would there be so much airflow inside this area? Is this a fault?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance! Read more

Just a thought, but does your car have a sun-roof? If so could it be something to do with the sun-roof drain tubes? Failing that a harness having come untaped?
Headlinings these days tend to be in one piece and not the headache of a job they used to be which usually ended up with at least the windscreen having to be removed. If the headlining does have to come down, things like grab handles and any obvious edge clips will have to come down first then see how you go from there.

I've had a HPI report done on my Mazda by a dealer friend who was interested in buying it for his son. It came up with a mileage discrepancy! I've only had it since June and it was HPI clear then. Transpires the mileage of 25200 has been entered at the DVLA as 252000. Apparently this is a common thing lately when the DVLA process V5's with a mileage on. Now regardless of whether I am selling or not, obviously this needed sorting. Friend contacted Experion/HPI who put him onto VMC. They requested V5, statement of current mileage signed by me and statement of mileage when I bought it signed by the previous owner, old MOT's. This was all duly faxed over to them on Thursday. I phoned VMC today and they confirmed that the erroneous mileage had been 'deleted'. However on doing another HPI report my friend informs me the discrepancy still shows. Have any of you had anything similar and if so how long does it take for HPI to 'catch up' with the mileage data from VMC?
I'll be honest and say I've seen another car which both myself and SWMBO like (she hates the Mazda!) but can't do anything until this is sorted. The chap selling has been understanding thus far, but I really need to give him a definite timescale, and obviously my friend is not prepared to give me cold hard cash until it is clear (he's not a close friend so I wouldn't expect him to 'take my word' on it clearing before it actually has). Any advise guys (and gals)? Read more

How exactly mileage verification works?

I've seen an optional field in V5 form where the seller may specify the mileage while selling the car.

Is there any other way to get the data? Can the servicing dealers send this mileage info to HPI?

However on doing another HPI report my friend informs me the discrepancy still shows.

This might be due to the fact that not all databases are updated at same time.

Update when a gear is selected the gear stick can be moved from side to side as if it is in neutral.

Hi all,

I've posted a few times on Peugeot forums, but not had any joy with my 607 probs.

The lastest issues I'm dealing with is a colour screen that is freezing up and parking sensors that decided to stop working all of a sudden.

I've had it put on the peugeot diag system and the errors for the multi display was a sticking contact on that joystick control and a sticky contact on the keypad.

No errors found on the parking sensors.

I've literally done nothing to the car for this to happen so I have no clue as to how to solve the issues.

Anybody got any idea on what I can do to sort it ??

thanks

...of oil.

Did a forecourt service on the Focus today and the dipstick is showing a drop for the first time.

It's a 2002 1.8Tdci with about 80k on the clock.

Don't think it will need a top-up before the next service and I realise VW/Audi owners will scoff at this level of consumption.

It's just that when you're used to a properly engineered product that doesn't use any oil.... Read more

My V70 with 198k on it is using oil; but that's because there is an engine seal that has died a death and is automatically changing the oil for me. As I keep piling the mileage on, the oil consumption isn't too bad (about 4 litres between services) which works out at about a litre every 3,000 miles. Just means that I have an automatic oil change a la VAG products

Hi there

Just about to change the plugs/air filter on my 1998 Camry. Popped into Halfords and was offerred those new-fangled Bosch Super 4 plugs with the 4 electrodes for about £20.00.

I seem to remember putting these in on our Accord and it might have been my imagination but they didn't feel as smooth as the bog-standard NGKs that were in before.

Anyone else here got any opinions on the Bosch plugs? It's not really a cost issue, I just want to get the best plugs I can.

Many thanks in advance

This was on the radio today and is very common practice - apparently.
Probably old hat and has been flogged to death already...

...but just in case it has not, I pass the info on.

SCENARIO

You are tootling down the road minding your own business.
Suddenly the car behind you does a TWO car overtake.

It pulls in front of the vehicle ahead of you and for no 'apparent' reason brakes hard and causing the car in front of you to an almost stop. Their combined intentions are to make you rear end the vehicle in front of you and have probably just succeeded in doing so?

?if you failed to keep your distance.

Yep, the occupants of these two cars are 'friends' working together and (if) having now caused the accident they are after, the lead car speeds off leaving you with a whole heap of mess to sort out.

It was reported that this is happening on all classes of roads including motorways and especially on slip road entry/exits and on approaches to/exits out of roundabouts. Places the lead car can make a quick exit from the scene.

AVOIDANCE ADVICE GIVEN WAS THIS :
This scenario will normally have 4+ people in the vehicle ahead of you and the overtaking vehicle will be a single occupant vehicle.

Vehicle ahead of you will usually be of the older type as in procured for a few hundred pounds and there to serve the purpose of surviving the one impact it has to for them to use it to ?cash in? on your insurance policy. The overtaking vehicle will usually be of a higher performance.

So, if you see a car full of people ahead of you and you have a single occupancy car behind you, looking for the overtake, hugging your rear end etc., - back right off, slow down, change your route or simply let the vehicle behind ahead of you.

I wonder how many owners of large unpopular unsellable (is there such a word? )
cars will also try to trash their vehicles in order to get a payout via
their insurers because they can't sell or part ex their cars/4x4's?

Surely the insurers work to market values for their payouts.

So 100% of a severely reduced value is still a small payment (compared with the expected price a year or more ago).
Cwarner

Hi, having owned my Xantia for a few weeks now, being thoroughly pleased with it, a few electrical moans have reared their ugly head- all on the same day to be honest!

This morning, straight after starting, the clock/outside temp display went gradually dim until it was nearly unreadable- then returned to normal at the same rate. During the journey the airbag light started flashing and continued to do so.
In the handbook it says that the airbag lamp should flash for five minutes and then go constantly on if a fault is present- but mine continues blinking.
If the car is stopped and engine is restarted then the airbag lamp will go out- only to return flashing after a minute or so of running. *also* when i restart the car the Traffic Master system chimes in after the engine has started- which it has never done before, and is quite irritating.
In addition, around a week ago the alarm kept going off while on the drive for no reason whatsoever- everything is locked and secured as it should be.
I was wondering if it could be an intermittent power loss/bad earth causing this.
Has anyone had any similar problems to this, and did you manage to remedy it?
I know these cars aren't exactly known for their relyable electrics.

Thanks

The non-start could be immobilizer issues. There may be some immob codes that might give a clue.

The rest of it is probably just French connexions.

Recently I have has a new air mass sensor, new lambda sensor, new spark plugs, new air filter, new catalytic converter, oil change fitted. This has reduced the emissions however the mpg is worse than before, about 12 mpg. (I have based my calculations on £4.50 per gallon, if this is not correct can someone please tell me.)

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have been told that the air mass sensor needs programming, is this right?

Sounds like a case of "The good, the bad &the Ugly".You have probably taken off some GOOD components, replaced them with BAD imitations and the result is UGLY.A genuine Bosch maf sensor should be around £160 and a lambda sensor either Bosch or NGK o/e quality about £70.Anything else will not work correctly.hth

Batting down to the country and back this weeked in variable, wettish weather, with the old jalopy running sweetly on the cold wet air, I thought I noticed its natural understeer had become worse, with the front letting go a couple of times on tight roundabout turns. I thought perhaps I had been a bit sudden with the steering and/or allowed the tyres to lose a bit of pressure. Sure enough, when I checked before coming back, they were down a couple of pounds all round. But the front end grip was still not as good as I seemed to remember it.

Both front tyres are about a year old and appear virtually as new on the tread. But the fine cuts or sipes present in new tyres never last all that long, and they make a lot of difference in the wet. The tyres cost about £30 each from a proper one-man tyrefitter in Bayswater, where many fine motors live. I can't remember what make they are, but not one of the leading traditional makes. Read more

But 1 thing that wont help you stop is a worn out expensive branded tyre!
or tyres!

Ybar, I agree that tyres are only part of the stopping problem, please see my "missed the edit" entry above.
