The following link gives a very detailed explanation of Lambda sensor operation.
www.picotech.com/auto/lambda_sensor.html

However it does not explain why a leak in the exhaust system can cause the measured Lambda value at the Tail pipe to rise to an unacceptable level ( marginally) for emissions testing at MoT time. Blocking the leak caused the Lambda to drop sufficiently to be acceptable as a pass.

I have been thro various the various options of reduced backpressure or possibly air being sucked into pipe by exhaust gas flow but cannot see this as viable explanation, since the 'positive' pressure is forcing exhaust gases out of the leak.

Anybody got a definitive answer? Meanwhile I will order a new box and clean out the pit!

I used to have a very good memory - almost total recall of any fact or figure that I'd ever bothered to take note of. Now I struggle to remember my own mobile number.... It's like living in a fog.

I'd think that cam timing would have a big part to play too. Pressure disparity across the exhaust valve at initial opening must be the defining factor. The expanding amplitude and interference effects from such a random initiation point as a round valve, probably means that the supersonic distance is very limited indeed.

Asked to sort mega oil leak on a Courier van, which had just had a second hand engine put in. Seemed to be pouring out of timing case, so dismantled to find a great hole where sump gasket should be! Dismantled so far, but having problems. I think I know the answer to what i'm asking.... Does the box have to come off as the sump seems captive behind the flywheel somehow? Cheers all you Ford gurus!

You can remove the sump without taking the gearbox out, if you bend the sandwich plate out of the way there is just enough room to get the sump pan off it's abit of a fiddle but it is possible.

I have a Pug 406 110 hdi on a T plate, I have been told that i have to have my new ecu recoded to the car, the car run`s ok, but i cannot erase the fault code`s (p0230_p0380) . also another quickie question, would a ecu from a hdi-90 work ok on a hdi-110. as the only difference i could see is the inter-cooler side of it.

still waiting on the 206. beside`s the wife has claimed it so no rush now. the 406 broke down long-long ago, and has sooo many new/recon part`s,eg ecu/hdi pump. but the ecu i had rebuilt will not clear the code`s, i have returned it to the company, they insist there is nothing wrong with it, but when i put a second hand hdi 90 on, it runs fine, but no turbo boost, black boxes (who need`s em! )

Hi

Ive been reading your posts on VSS and wondered if you think that my problem if the caused by this??????

Car: Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec

Faults:

Speedo drops to O any time it likes
When it does drop to 0 and you drop down gears and speed at junction or roundabout the engine cuts out and the car dies. The battery, oil and engine light comes on and you have to re-start the car. It ok when you going along only when you slow down dies. This problem has gone from rare to every time driven near enough!!!!!
Have had tracking light come on on a couple of occasions and WILL NOT turn off until car restarted.
Have had digital speedo and miles disappear on a couple of occasions.

As you can imagine I am vary weary of driving it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have had the car hooked up and had the engine management checked as was told could be this - NO Problems found.

Also Told :

Could be the wire to the battery????
Could be fuel pump????

Please anyone who has had this and could tell me yes its defently this or that would be a STAR...as cant afford to keep taking it backwards and forwards to garage thats why i drive it as is!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in hope

I have over the last year put a couple of deepish gouges on the rear bumber taking things out due to the low bumper on the car but i have just come back from France and somene has put a 12" scratch down the side of my rear bumper, but to cap it all i have reversed into a sign today and scratched all down the other side of the rear bumper. The only good thing is all off the scratches some down to the black underneath are on the rear bumper.
Question...do i get a new bumper fitted and have it sprayed ( metallic) or will it be able to just spray the bumper? anybody and ideas and a rough estimate would be great please

Tally,

I don't know whther this helps but at the weekend I repaired a couple of unsightly scuffs from my rear bumper - I'd backed into a low wall. I used a product called Quixx that really works - I bought my kit from Ebay somewhile ago, having read an article on it in Autoexpress.

Try this link ----- www.speeding.co.uk/acatalog/Quixx_Scratch_Remover_...l

You may find it a little cheaper on Ebay too

I've raised the first topic before, and nobody is intertested.
Topic 1
Why is it necessary to have top speed capability when in reverse gear ? Accidents are reprted perodically when somebody accidentally accelerates in reverse gear and causes damage and worse. With modern technology can't a selector be put on to limit speed to say, 5 mph ?
Topic 2
I have an auto box, and the reversing lights flash every time I change from park to drive. Not only does it cause alarm to drivers behind me, but it stresses to bulb filaments. Most cars now have a soft start device which causes the interior light to come on gently when the engine is turned off. That would solve the problem because by the time the device has started to react the lever will have moved on. Can I buy a similar device from an aftermarket shop ? Read more

Hillman - the solution to your 'problem' is simple. The reversing light actuating switch will be at the base of the lever or nearby sticking of the gearbox. Simply break into one of the wires adding a switch near at hand so you can leave the lights switched off until you are really reversing. I guess the indicators must give you sleepless nights, all that flashing on and off...

Spot on Nsar. So sharing the same thoughts this thread is about to be locked.

A tragedy happened a while ago and this debate/discussion in my opinion is inappropriate. He dies along with others in the accident and this lack of paperwork probably not the cause. Who knows.

Aanyway debate it elsewhere. Thread now locked.

My exhaust pipe had broken where the back section meets the centre section on my 1998 Swindon Civic. I want a genuine one.

The problem is I am very busy at work for at least the next month and don't have time to go to my friendly Honda emporium. The car won't be used much between now and then.

Apart from sounding like a prat am I doing any harm, nipping to the shops and such like?

As a side issue, why do exhaust pipe fail so often?

....and why when manufacturers spend money jumping through legislative hoops on bystander noise can some yoof stick a noisy pipe on his hatchback/sports bike and pass an MOT?

Kwik-Fit used to offer exhausts with one,two or three year warranty;exhausts were all the same-you just paid more to cover their costs if you ever came back.
