A couple of recent longer journeys have made me realise how much an average cross-country speed had dropped in the past 25 years or so.

I remember being able to reckon on roughly a mile a minute for a weekend trip home from Harlow to Burnley back in 1981 - accomplished in a ten year-old 1256cc Vauxhall Viva! The idea of managing a 60mph average (where non-motorway roads are involved) today seems optimistic, to say the least.

What do other Backroomers think is a good average speed nowadays - for daytime non-motorway runs? Read more

Can we leave it at that?

My A class has failed it's MOT on a broken front coil spring, the spring support plate has also cracked so a new spring and strut is needed. I'm picking up the parts later, but need a little help with the fitting.

I can see how to remove the bottom of the strut and separate it from the drop link, but a little unsure how to remove the top. Under the bonnet at the top of the strut there is a single large centre bolt. The thread inside this has a hex key hole. There are also two torx type bolt heads to the side of the large nut, and also two plastic clip things.

I am thinking if I remove the two torx type bolts then the strut will be released and then once it is off the car I can compress the spring and undo the large nut which will release the top plate and the spring.

Is this correct? Also what are the two plastic clips at the top of the strut?

Thanks for any help

Thanks for the advice, all sorted now! Hardest bit was using the spring compressors, very scarey.

Summary

A charity worker was beaten up and left for dead after politely asking a fellow rail passenger to move out of his way, a court heard.

Roger Hare enraged his attacker by saying 'Excuse me' as he tried to make his way off the train.

The 62-year-old was punched repeatedly and sent flying out of the carriage and on to the station platform.

Other passengers were too scared to step in and watched as his alleged attacker, Ebanezer Adesina, calmly got off the train and walked away.

Why is this allowed to happen!

Thanks for the info guys, i will have to take a closer look at the type of fitment then by the sounds of things, i know what you mean about taking it to a exhaust centre, have done that already, they told me i need a new middle section, my shocks also need looking at and new rear shoes as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a £60 job turns into a £MEGA job at some of these fast fit centres - {name generalised - DD}.

I kinda agree with the middle section bit as the previous owner decided to patch weld the joint between mid and back box so fitting the rear box is going to be trouble unless i use a flexi fitment, ie cut out the nasty end to the mid section add a flexi fit and fit a new back box.

Anyone got any views on FLEXI FITMENTS, u find then on a well known auction site for about £9.00

Your thoughts are always welcome

Cheers for looking

Bought a car in May being told it had FSH and was one owner (verbally) from a Land Rover dealership. Had tow bar fitted and brought home. Since receiving log book found out I am the third owner. Dealership have contacted us to say they can't find out who first serviced the vehicle and are trying to contact the first owner - this has been going on since May. So it hasn't got a FSH at the moment. The car broke down within 20 mins of picking it up but they did pay for over £700 worth of work to it which we agreed to have done at our local dealership. Feel as if I'm being picky but they shouldn't state 1 owner/FSH if it isn't accurate. Read more

You need to write to them sooner rather than later informing them politely of your displeasure and that you are thinking of rejecting the car. You also need to send a copy and covering letter to Land Rover UK. You've been sold something different than you paid for with missing service history that's worth a lot less when you come to sell it.

Take action ASAP or repent at leisure. You aren't being 'picky' they sold you a pup which broke down and lied to you about it as well!

If you paid for any of it with a credit card you can get the C/C company involved as well. They'll refund you the full amount and take it up with the dealer!!!

I did exactly as described when a stupid Subaru dealer lied to me about my car being covered by a 'Proven' warranty and then tried to give me some useless aftermarket job. Not only did I get a refund and apology in the end I also made IM sweat blood to stop me suing them.

Does anyone know how to adjust a cliffford alarm so that when i lock and unlock the car by the fob, it does not beep so loud. I start work at 4am and i feel it is a little noisey for the neighbours. Read more

I've bought an Astra H 1.8 automatic 55 plate via Network Q. I'm new to Vauxhalls so I'm
not sure of a rattle on startup, it comes from the offside of the engine where I think the belts
would be. After a few miles the sound disappears, I thought it could be something running
short of oil at startup. Can anyone help with this ?

I've been looking at a few sites to compare quotes.

Unlimited mileage and taxes I can understand :-) - but . . .

Is Loss Damage Waiver (Hertz and Airline Network) the same as Collision Damage Waiver (Alamo)? (Alamo offers Theft Protection, which the others do not mention)

Alamo offers $1 Million Liability Coverage (EP) as well as Third Party Liability (state min).

Airline Network offers Supplemental Liability Ins. and Uninsured Motorist Protection

Hertz offers Vehicle Licensing Cost Recovery & Liability Insurance Supplement, (and for an extra fee Personal Accident Insurance / Personal Effects Coverage)

And for that matter, I can find nothing about an additional driver on the Hertz site, whereas the others give prices.

are all these quotes comparable? All clarifications welcome!

Best tip you can have, check that car for any bodywork damage no matter how small because when you return it and they find even a scratch it could cost megabucks. Best to hire your car through a UK tour operator as any problems are easier to solve. I.E. I had a Neon which had a puncture and they said get it fixed and pay. I refused and they were pretty nasty about it 'til I set Virgin on them. Result? a big upgrade and 'have a nice day sir'

We hear it every morning; Sally Traffic - Accident on the M99. Delays all over. I was on the M1 to Leeds Monday and we were an hour stood just picking our noses, because there was a four car pile up down the line, complete with Ambulance and Bobby support!

How do these accidents happen? Who causes them? Are the drivers asleep? How much does this really cost? I think we should be able to sue the idiots who caused it

them, surely there must be some redress against foolish drivers! We see them every morning weaving, darting, tail hugging!

Comments please, I find it so infuriating.

Also the use of the word 'accident' grates a little - as if there was
nothing anyone could have done to prevent it :-(

I agree completely with this.

I for one would like to know the outcome of these investigations to find out what the actual causes of everyday incidents are.

Are they all the result of a particularly stupid action, or are they due to carelessness which is considered 'normal' and 'safe' by the majority of drivers? For example, most drivers tailgate (consider especially the time when someone is changing lane - either the front or back of their car is often very close to the car infront/behind). In other words, is this standard of driving OK until something out of the ordinary happens when they find that they have not left any margin for error?

I think the 2 hour delays are just payback time for all the cumulative minutes won by people trying to rush. If everyone drove carefully they may lose a few minutes every day but be inconvenienced by a crash much less frequently.

Hello again, I'm interested in buying a V12 - what cars are readily available in the V12 guise, is Aston Martin one and possibly the 7 series BMW, Bentley, RR and are there any more?.
I've searched Google but unable to come up with a list of new V12's. I will be buying for dad and his money. (max budget 50k.
Thanks
