Hi,
Whilst changing a flat tyre I notices that the CV boot was split. I'm pretty sure its recent as I checked them both a couple of months ago before the MOT/Service. Whats the rough cost to get them replaced ? Im pretty sure most of it will get put on labour as its a fiddly job. I don't have the time nor the patience/ability to do it myself.
Any ideas folks ??
Cheers

Hey, anyone had any dealings with this company? If so, I would be interested to know Read more
my old boss who's a bit of a part time wheeler dealer with cars bought one off them a couple of years or so ago. As I recall it was stolen/recovered top-of-the-range Legacy estate and needed a bit of work (locks etc) but he ran it for several months if not longer. Can't ask him as he's on holiday but I do know he now uses ebay most of the time so that might tell you something.
I live about 3/4 of a mile up a lane with a drop of 35ft approx to the junction where it joins the "main" road. Not much granted, but the engine has an easy time for that 3/4 of a mile and the fuel computer reads in the 40s mpg in summer by the time I reach the junction. The engine's still not hot but it's getting there. On the return journey I'm doing the "climb" with a hot engine. So - am I saving fuel by living on this miniscule bump?

Engines lose efficeincy at higher altitude as the air is thinner. If the air at the top of your hill is 0.0000001% thinner than at the bottom, this needs to be taken into account in your calculation, although the effect could be partially cancelled out by the air being fractionally cooler at altitude in the case of a diesel engine! The correlation of humidity and altitude also needs to be considered, as does the local meteorological microclimate and the prevailing wind direction.
I saw a news item about people careering through flooded Gloucestershire on jetskis, intimidating people and in one case leading to a confrontation.
It set me wondering about the legal status of jetskis on a flooded road. Clearly responsible use of a motor boat in a flood is acceptable and probably nobody even gives any thought to its legal status. But presumably a jetski on a flooded road is an untaxed, uninsured motor vehicle that doesn't comply with Construction and Use regulations and so tearaways could be prosecuted under motoring laws and receive penalty points on their licences. Not only reckless - but fat too. That settles it....
I've recently obtained a 56 plate/2000 mile Focus Zetec estate as my new company wheels.
Does anyone have driving experience of the new Focus , as mostly it can't be faulted , but there does seem to be excess creaking from the interior.
It's fine at speed but at lower speeds seems quite noticeable ,
especially making low speed turns or speed humps/rough surfaces. The noise seems to be from in or around the front doors.
Has anybody noticed this on other cars and do you think the garage would be willing to investigate it? Read more
Thanks for the input folks , I shall take a look at the focus website. Having had Fords before this one I can't say I've noticed it as a problem on other models.
I have just bought a 1980 MGB GT that has sat since 1999. The engine starts and runs rough as one would expect after all that time but is blowing a good deal of smoke from the filler cap so I assume that the bores/rings are worn.
Has anyone any hints or tips specific to rebuilding one of these b-series engines other than the obvious swap to a V8?!?
Cheers,

That sounds like great advice, many thanks!
I shall try the tips and report back on the results, cheers.
Saw an 04 Ford Focus C-max at the local Ford dealership advertised for £4999. I called in to ask about it but was quickly steered by the salesman to look at other C-max the dealer had in stock from £5999 and upwards.
I told him these were outside of my budget and I was interested in the C-max they have advertised at £4999. He explained it wasn't available yet. I could see the vehicle sitting there with the price clearly displayed in the window and down the side in big yellow letters.
So I asked him to clarify. To paraphrase, he said, "Yes that C-max is for sale at £4999, and you can buy it today. Only thing is you won't be able to take it away for 3 months."
At this point I must have totally glazed over, switched off and left, never to return. Probably.
My question is, what is the dealership playing at? Advertising a car for £4999, having the actual car in stock but being unable to supply it for 3 months? Read more
I was only joking really AS (although not all political sleaze scandals are really worth the fuss they generate... cash for honours for example being, er, time-honoured).
I do find fairly appalling attitudes have become quite widespead in the population though, more so than when I was young, and not just in the motor trade.
Or perhaps the rose tinting on my spectacles has faded with age!
I have a friend (amazing, I know) with an old Renault Espace. The headlining is mostly rigid but with what looks like three areas of carpet squares. These squares started to sag and drop so we used a spray glue (intended for for carpet tiles) on it and it seemed ok for a while. They started to sag again so more glue was used but now they're hardly staying up at all - any recommendations? Read more

Hi there,
Does anyone know where the alarm siren on my grand scenic is located? I intend to fit a louder alarm siren as the renault one is frankly pathetic; it can barely be heard in the house!!!!
My car is a Grand Scenic 2.0T privilege
cheers

heading up the motorway last night and a striped up BMW 5 series went past very rapidly 'advertising' After about a mile the roof lights went off and it sat in with the rest of the traffic. On rounding a bend there he was on the hard shoulder behind a Vectra, roof lights back on. Do the police 'get in position' to do their timing thing for speeders and then pounce or could there be another explanation?
Also if the speeder had an accident whilst the police were in 'stealth mode' could there be grounds for saying if they'd stopped him sooner the accident wouldn't have happened? Read more
I was told the bullhorn should be used sparingly, on tight corners, roundabouts etc to give 'direction' to the wail/yelp/two tones, or if all other methods of alerting motorists/road users/pedestrians has failed.
It's intimidating and can easily startle a drivers into making irrational decisions like stopping as soon as they hear it, thereby impeding progress of the appliance.

'Split' boots are a complete waste of time. I have tried to use them a number of times and they always fail.
Get an OE VW boot. Reckon on an hour to do it, its not difficult.
