hi, I have a 1993 Rover 827 Coupe fitted with the Honda Engine

On the dashboard the PGM-Fi light goes out within a couple of seconds when you turn the ignition on but when you start the engine the light comes on and stays on.

After hunting high and low I managed to find the PGM-Fi control unit (under the drives seat) and it is flashing a code of four flashes.

Anyone know what this means??

My car also Has a slight blow between the front pipe and the cat...has this got anything to do with it?? Read more

Off to Brittany soon for a fortnight. Last year I found my credit card wouldn't work at the automated pumps and had to fill up at supermarkets with a manned kiosk. Does anybody have any recent experiences, I was wondering whether it was a "blip" or if the pumps don't recognize certain cards? I have Switch/Maestro, Mastercard and Visa - hopefully one of them will work!
Cheers Read more

I have a Visa card issued in Luxembourg and I have never been able to use it in Esso automated stations in France. I tried in Alsace, in the Calais region and in the south of France but the card was rejected each time. Now I stick to manned petrol stations and never have problems with Visa, Mastercard or Maestro.

Dear backroomers,

I would like to seek your advice.

I'm keeping an eye on a friend's motor following his relocation back to our capital city.

His 4 year old Leon is parked legally in the street outside my house. It's Spanish registered, and typical for the country, not in showroom condition. It's been there about 2 weeks. It is not with it's owner due to lack of parking facilities and Ken's cameras.

Today I find a Council notice stuck on the screen saying in the Council's opinion the car is abandoned, and in 7 days the car will be destroyed.

I've got the key, but I'm not the owner or registered keeper.

Now, can i just remove the notice, and the problem will go away? After all, it's a free country and the street is anyone's car park legally I though.

Contact the council to say "go away", even though I'm not the owner?

Do I put a new notice in the window saying it's not abandoned and is minding its own business?

I assume foreign registered cars can park legally in the UK?

Or should I just move it to another street?

I'm only a couple of stops from a large UK airport, so the nosy neighbours obviously think it's been either genuinely abandoned, or the street is being used as a long stay car park (which it often is, to be honest). But the later is no reason to go round crushing cars.

Thanks for taking the time to read this - comments welcome

Ian

Due to the process of moving decided to take car to my local rover expert. Have been told noise is from gearbox bearings and they need to replace mainshaft and counter shaft bearings total cost aprox £500 to £515 with the possibility that clutch may need replacing at £105, total cost around £620.00.

The noise has been on the car for aprox 3000 miles, I'm in two minds whether to cut my losses and get rid of and purchase a replacement car of around £2,000 to £3,000 bearing in mind the current car has 120,000 miles onit and I expect to do an average of 13,000 per year for the foreseable future. Took the car to a specialist transmision place. Most likely pinon bearing is going cost to replace with labour & VAT is £330 with 12 months warranty on parts. Another co quote £220 all in but with 6 months garantee. Was told car could be still driven but would noise would get louder and guess what soon after leaving the specialist the noise got louder.

Just as well I am off work this week to sort it out.

Just out of interest how many bearings would there be in a 416i gearbox

The timing of traffic signals has also been changed, new turn lanes have been created and access roads have been closed, while more city buses are running and car pooling is being encouraged.

Hi,

I've just purchased a fiat seicento and need to change the tyres already.

Can I put tyres from a put Fiat Barchetta? They are195/55R15 85V. I'm not sure, but they are going cheep and I would like to take advantage of it,

Thanks to any advice that anyone can give,

Having owned both cars the imediate difference is a wheel size - 13 ins on a Sciecento sporting and 15's or 16's on the barchetta. Tyres for the seicento are about £50 for a premium brand. I would have thought a 15 inch wheel on a Seicento would be too big. Interesting one for you insurance co as fiat don't make an upgrade wheel like they did for the barchetta.

I know the subject of cycle carriers has been discussed many times but I want to know which carrier is best for me?

I have a 306 estate and 2 cycles I want to carry. At the moment I have no towbar so I am open to all 3 options (roof mounted, towbar mounted or boot mounted)

I want to know which is the safest, securest and wont harm the bikes or car

thanks Read more

BobbyG

I would second the opinion on towbar mounted (not least cos I have one advertised in the Classifieds above!).

Seriously with Towbar you can add them on without lifting too high and it is very solid and stable. However you need to account in the price of a towbar unless you have one already.

I have recently switched from a Scenic to an Altea XL, the Scenic had a towbar fitted for under £200. However the towbar for the Altea is over £400.

I can buy a set of Thule roof bars and their own make cycle carriers (for 4 bikes) for about £220 which is what I am planning on doing. Just need to find out how to get them up on the roof!

My 2002 Ford Focus Zetec 1.8tdci decided not to start last night. When going to start the motor, after waiting for all the usual lights to go out, the car did not start . . . it seemed to want to but didn't - just a slight noise. After thinking it was the battery, I tried to jump start it, and that failed. therefore got towed back to the house.

My mate belives the code has fallen off the key, how do you reset this? can it be done manually or do I need to get someone out to have a look at it?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated Read more

hmmmm OK - sorry I am useless with technical stuff . . .
