I was having tyres fitted a few days ago in a place that also does MOT`s. It gave me the opportunity to observe a smoke test being carried out. To my surprise the engine did not seem to be given a floored throttle up to the limiter.
It seemed to be given a more gradual application of throttle and slower build up of revs to a lower max revs.
Unlike when I take our diesel to the council place and its really booted up to the limiter.
I have no problem with the latter, but was just interested in what was happening as I thought stamping on the throttle up to max revs was obligatory and monitored by the testing equipment?

is that why Alonso is at Spa whilst the rest of the team (inc Hamilton) are in Paris?
Hi,
Just recently my 1999 Mercedes C220 CDi temperature gauge has started to rise higher than it has before I have checked the electric fan and that seems to be running OK but the gauge still rises above the normal centre position, It hasn't boiled over its just that its worried me when I'm in traffic as soon as the road clears the gauge goes back to normal or sometimes slightly lower than normal.
The antifreeze/coolant hasn't been changed for 2.5 years would that make any difference, and has the fan got 2 speeds as while it is turning quiet fast and you can't see the fan blades it really doesn't seem be steaming it around, I have said that because on an old car I had years ago the electric fan really used to make a lot of noise when it was going and the Mercedes one doesn't Is That Normal
I would appreciate any suggestion, it could just be me ??
THANKS

I have a 2001 QX A33 face lifted model and having seen HJ's Car- by- Car Breakdownby rang Nissan to check the price of the headlamps- £783 each ! I'm keen to get some plastic protectors but Nissan GB no longer stock them. I've emailed a few dealers in Australia where the QX was a big seller but have had no response. Does anybody know of an Nissan outlet which might have older Nissan parts or have any good ideas about sourcing these items?
Tthanks in antiscipation. Read more
EPC=Electronic parts catalogue. Nissan use an EPC called 'FAST'. Normally out of stock items can be obtained from Japan in 6-8 weeks, and about 2 weeks if urgent.
I just wondering if I could pick some HJ heads , where is the best place to obtain guide prices for cars at auction . I am looking at a BMW 530d M-Sport Saloon 2006-55 with 30000 miles on it just wanted to know what kind of upper limit I should have?
Many thanks for any help. Read more

Hi board,
I have a confession to make... I'm a bad person, I drive to work in Docklands every day...
Currently I am living out near the M20 in Kent, and can make it into work in 1hr-1hr15 min (depending on the Blackwall Tunnel), compared to a commute of nearly 2 hours each way on the train and the sweaty, overcrowded Jubilee line. It's a nice fast drive (M20, A20, A205, A102) until I hit the Blackwall Tunnel queue. I am lucky in that I can park at work so that's not a problem.
I am looking to move further west to be nearer my girlfriend, as she works in Windsor, so was wondering if there's a similarly fast way in from that part of the world (say from around Croydon/Reigate/Leatherhead/Guildford/Woking)? Is the A23 any good in the rush hour? Or the M3/A316/A4 and through central London? (I have the use of a car that will hopefully be congestion charge free from next year as it gives out <120g/km CO2)
Or am I going to have to be subjected to South West Trains every day (a prospect I am not relishing)?
Any experiences anyone can share?
Thanks,

I am trying to help a friend sell a 1970, White, Audi Two-door, Saloon, LHD, Classic car, with 20,000 km on the clock and only one owner.
He has fell on hard times and needs to raise some cash.
I see there is a website, Classic Cars, that looks a possibility.
Any advice would be welcome. Read more
I thought it was a lot too. But he told me that when I was writing the advert for him. Not sure what he knows about cars or how costly/difficult to get they are. But the chrome bumpers look like new, so perhaps it was his baby.
A friend of ours currently has a 3 year old PT Cruiser which is his company car (he is self-employed). He needs to replace it in the next couple of months (not in the UK) and is looking for suitable alternatives.
His wants are:
? A raised driving position.
? 2m (min. 1.8m) load bay length as he sometimes sleeps in the car.
? Something similar in size to the PT Cruiser.
? Petrol, it must run on petrol. No diesels?
He does not want another PT Cruiser as this one has been awful in terms of reliability; he is £3000 down over and above normal servicing and consumables on it.
He does not want a 4x4 either.
No. of seats are not important as there are only two of them, kids have left home though for work he does need a larger than average boot.
He is not a petrol head but I think the PT Cruiser is at the lower end of the performance spectrum. I don't know if a petrol Berlingo would be OK or not ?
My suggestions are:
? Citroen C4 Picasso or, original Xsara Picasso.
? Ford C-Max, possibly S-Max
? Maybe, a SEAT Altea (XL) not sure if it is raised enough.
? VW Touran
? Nissan Cashcow
? At a push a Renault Scenic or Vauxhall Zafira though, he may not remain a friend if I recommend either of these. Possibly even a FIAT Multipla ?
These are not the type of cars I would normally look for myself, my question; is there anything I've overlooked?
I had thought of the Mitsubishi pick-up types but his sleeping requirement may knock those out of the equation.
I'm just looking for a list of cars which I can then provide him with the details of, we can discuss, then he can arrange test drives.
Thanks,
gmac

I'm sure the Hyundai Tucson was a 4x4!!
That's what I thought but according to the blurb it's available as a 2.0l front wheel drive.
A friend's wife has had a lease car for the last 5 years. Her 9 year NCB she did have has expired. There has been info before on companies who will take into account driving record whilst using lease cars and will calculate premiums with some NCD.
Can anyone let me know who she should be trying? She has had one claim about 3.5 years ago.
As the removal of a lease car is a change to her contract she has negotiated a lump sum to replace her car - don't know how much.
She has been offered her four year old Golf 1.9TDi with 60,000 on the clock for £7,000. The car has just had full service, new clutch, timing belt etc and she is in two minds whether to keep it or buy something brand new so she gets a three year warranty. She is looking at superminis as the Golf is a bit too big for them - I've suggested Yaris or Jazz as two to look at.

When my old company did this we were all issued automatically with a letter from our company insurance broker to say we had X years claim free.
In my case, Liverpool Victoria (AKA Frizzell) accepted it without any problems.
I don't see why there would be a problem with ordinary Class 1 business use - many companies include this as standard now anyway. My daughter just changed her policy with Admiral to Class 1 mid way through the year, and the premium went down!
Hello All,
'98 model Clio 1.6 RXE manual, still on original pads and discs at 48k, needs pads shortly and discs a little corroded, inclined towards Renault dealer for parts unless a saving is to be had elsewhere, perhaps online or phone order?
Thanks. Read more
I can also vouch for Brake Parts - i use them regularaly and even if there is a problem the lads there are happy to sort things out.

Thanks for the info. I haven't got a clue what you're on about but I am in no doubt you are right.
