Due to the process of moving decided to take car to my local rover expert. Have been told noise is from gearbox bearings and they need to replace mainshaft and counter shaft bearings total cost aprox £500 to £515 with the possibility that clutch may need replacing at £105, total cost around £620.00.
The noise has been on the car for aprox 3000 miles, I'm in two minds whether to cut my losses and get rid of and purchase a replacement car of around £2,000 to £3,000 bearing in mind the current car has 120,000 miles onit and I expect to do an average of 13,000 per year for the foreseable future.

If the car is otherwise sound, Car, a second-hand gearbox shouldn't cost the earth... should more or less halve that cost, including new clutch which has to be worth doing while engine and gearbox are separated (unless the one on the car is fairly new).

Rest of car seems fine but with 120,000 miles on it my trust in the car is starting to waiver. If I kept the car another 20,000 miles what else could go wrong? or what likely need replacing

Worth keeping the car IMO as this gearbox normaly lasts lifetime of car, usually the engine gives out before box does

MMM so my car has lasted only 120,000 miles if the gearbox lasts the lifetime of the car.
Looking back with hindsight I should have told the ins co to write of the car 5 years ago when a joyrider decided to practise reversing at high speed into the front of my parked car. I wonder is this shunt has lessened the life of the gearbox bearings?
|
From your post you are not happy with the car anyway,if this is the case, its an ideal time to part company.
I doubt the shunt/s have caused it as it would have caused problems before this,a lot of these cars go on for 200k + miles but usualy with having several head gaskets go in between, that is what I was refering to before gearboxs last longer than engines and the car,so a recon or secondhand box should last it till its scrapped.........

the mileage doesn't really matter now but your lack of trust does. When you're in the bangernomics world you need to trust your instincts, if you're not 100% happy with it it's time to move on. ie my Previa is coming up to 200K miles but IMHO was still worth spending money on at the last MOT.

Replace the gearbox with a good secondhand unit, and bung a new clutch in at the same time. Cost should be minimal, particularly if you can DIY. I'd reckon on a couple of hundred quid max total parts.
You won't find another serviceable car for anything like what it will cost you to put this right, and if it's a car that's plentiful in breakers, it's just not worth rebuilding gearboxes. When the 'box got noisy on my old Cavalier SRi I was quoted £200 to fix the 'box, or £50 for a complete secondhand box with a 14 day guarantee. Most reputable breakers will offer a short guarantee on the parts they sell, or at least a refund / exchange within a day or two if the part is no good.
My £50 gearbox was still going strong when I got rid of the car 18 months later.
Cheers

Took the car to a specialist transmision place. Most likely pinon bearing is going cost to replace with labour & VAT is £330 with 12 months warranty on parts. Another co quote £220 all in but with 6 months garantee. Was told car could be still driven but would noise would get louder and guess what soon after leaving the specialist the noise got louder.
Just as well I am off work this week to sort it out.
Just out of interest how many bearings would there be in a 416i gearbox
