Can anyone tell me the maker of the 2004 diesel fitted please? Also, is it reliable and quiet at 80mph? Finally, I have read reports that the early models had hard suspension; was this softened for the later models? thank you.

have a prob with carb on the fiesta, the throttle cable anchor(plastic) has broken in to numerous parts as far as im aware it cant be replaced with a new part and needs a carburettor replacement (from the scrappy) would it be an easy job to swap an old for a new old unit as in new gasket and a few undoing of bolts , what's my chances of getting a duff replacement or worse contamination by rain water , the chaps at the scrap yard want £30 for a carb.....thanks Read more

I was having a chuckle with a mate of mine about this today (he's got 25+ years in the business as an owner/manager and the best diagnostics man I know - but even he gets stumped from time to time):

Apparently by paying £20k+VAT you can become an expert in automotive diagnostics (following a week's course!!) and make £1000 a week without lifting a bonnet.

I wonder what happens to the guys who invest in this and then pull up next to their first call out and find 5 CAN-related codes? Read more

Screwloose has it right, I'm afraid. All this will do is drive down the price of a code read and drive up demand for oxygen sensors! LOL!

Random question...

How close do you have to live to the sea before sea salt becomes an issue for your paintwork?

Where I lived, a couple of hours parked outside the house in roughish weather would see the car with a complete white coating just like icing. It really was extreme.
If you want to hear how close we were to the sea, go the National Maritime Museum and listen as you walk up to the entrance and in the foyer to the sound of the sea pounding on a beach. It was recorded outside our house...

Cananyone tell me the correct tyre pressures, or suggest a website that might have this type of data, for my Corolla

It is 1994 5door Hatchback 1.6 GLi

Tyres are 175/65 R14 from what I can read off the scuffed sidewalls !

haynes manual suggests 37psi which sounds ridiculaously high, and makes car skate around and unstable.

Haynes manual is reprint of USA-spec manual, so wondering if US psi is different to UK imperial ?

Thanks !

How long would you wait until you gave a brand new car a polish?
(Assuming the car is non-metallic and has no "paint guard" treatment)

In my experience is is better never to polish a car.

When rubbing-in wax, you create thousands on tiny scratches on the surface that dirt sticks to.

I discovered this years ago when I had my Morris Minor convertible re-spayed - every time it rained, the car looked like it had just been washed.

Same with out 4+ year old Forester.

Occasionally, using only rainwater, I soak, then wash with with some liguid wax in it, then rinse (but I don't dry with a cloth or sponge, as the water has no limescale, there are no "rings" left when dry)

BiLs car was the same age (03 BMW) and he washed it every week / frequent waxing - after 4 years , the difference in shine was incredible.

Anyone have an idea how much a dealership pays to transport a new car to somewhere about 100 miles away and take back the old vehicle? I ask because the logic of lease companies means my new Mazda 6 will come from Leicester, even though the local Mazda dealer is a business centre and only 2 miles away.

Not sure if they will stick on a transporter or drive it. And the reason for finding out I'd like the Mazda6 iPOD connector which is about £180 installed. Installation requires not just the removal of the radio but a lot of the centre dashboard, ashtray, gear lever gaiter etc. So I might cheekily say I'll collect the car if they give me a cheap/free iPOD connector. They're willing to think about it anyway ;-) Read more

Thanks woodbines. My thought on delivery = ipod connection about right ;-)

For work I'd have to wait in most of the day... so driving down might make sense anyway.

Just realised that:

- Golf arrives August - a few weeks later I go on holiday
- Passat arrives and I go on holiday two days later
- Mondeo arrives and I go on holidays a few days later
- Mazda6 likely to arrive as early as possible (they stopped building them 3 months ago!) but early as possible = lease - 2 weeks... so would go on holiday 2 days later

What is it with me and new cars! They can keep the Mazda until I'm ready though, i.e. back from holiday. Unless they agree I can get it in September.

In anticipation of going to France, I'll be driving around the periphique down towards Bourges, if tomtom has his way:-) Anway does anyone know what the traffic is likely to be like around 10am Staurday?

Thanks in advance. Read more

I've been driven round the peripherique a few times by a French rep. Its mostly been at snails pace with him explaining to the customer that we would be late because:-

Perepherique, accidente super
enjoying lunch

I've also driven round it once, at about 3am, driving a luton bodied motorhome, trying to keep up with a Porsche 911 and a Corvette Stingray. Traffic was still heavy though moving at 60mph. It needed all the wits I could manage at that time of night having already been driving for ten hours.
