On the basis that this is a very useful and informative site, run at no cost to us by HJ and moderated by well intentioned moderators, I think we can all cope with a few spelling and syntax corrections without getting steamed up about it. Anybody who doesn't like the site can go and post on www.chavsinsaxosandbasball hats.co.uk or any site that better suits their approach to life. Or they could just leave, preferably without the drama queen approach of somebody who quit last month. The site is bigger than any of the people who contribute to it including, I hasten to add, me!

Firstly, thank you.
Secondly, can we try and keep discussions about moderation off the boards and by email please.

Hi all,
Whilst winding down the M6 to work yesterday (just love quiet summer traffic) I noticed a fair number of drivers with their seat really close to the steering wheel. They were a mix of young women or elderly people and they seemed to have the seat as fully forward as possible. Would this increase the likelyhood of injuries if they had a crash ? I know some peoples size makes it hard for them to reach pedals, wheel etc but surely in the event of a crash, even with an airbag they wouldn't come out of it too good...
Any thoughts folks ?

I sit as far as possible from the steering wheel ~ and have done ever since I saw someone with the steering column stuck in their chest in the 1960s. I know designs have changed since that time, and that we now have seat belts and air bags, but I still feel that all solid objects in front of me in a car should be as far away as possible.

I invite backroomers to post the automotive design faults which have caused them the most misery and probably expense. One old and one new might make interesting reading, if only to see if the automotive industry have learnt any lessons.
Here are my two for starters - they're both electrical:
Old: - The wonderful SU electric petrol pump.
New: - The seemingly random elecrtical failures which are caused by solder fatigue. These range from the famous VAG "Relay 109" to the failures of instrument panels (usually in parts), switch panels and some ECUs. The German manufacturers seem to have more than their fair share of these.
Solder has no strength in fatigue - 6 bends and a stick of it is broken. Badly designed electronic assemblies suffer from fatigue as they are thermally cycled - the stress reversals ensure premature unit failure due to broken (not dry) joints.

Two of everything on small aircraft. Magneto (none of this coil ignition rubbish!), plugs, fuel system. Except the thing most likely to go awry. Pilot.
Some foreign tourists in the area last week lost their keys, this rendered them totally immobile. Local indie was the nearest garage to them, he turned up in his truck and towed the vehicle away.
Whilst they sat down to that uniquely British experience of bacon butty and tea in the statutory chipped and grime stained mug, he ingeniously by passed the ignition and immobiliser and secured a temporary ignition lock and key. The cost of this - a big fat zero. Hardly likely to generate repeat trade but they did have one thing in common.....the vehicle in question was a Honda motor cycle, and the indie a very popular and much respected non-franchised motorcycle dealer. Just goes to show that the milk of human kindness does still flow in this benighted country. Read more
Yes! 2 Bacon butties and an Alka Seltzer!
Just been in to see my local Chrysler dealer about a 300C. Dealer tells me that the V8 Hemi may soon be discontinued due to lack of demand and very honestly told me not to rely on being able to sell it for any money in 5 years time! Demand for the 3.0 diesel remains high (very unlikely to get a new car on a 57) and is the only model second-hand buyers are interested in. Lack of demand for Hemi borne out by a sub £19k car showing on the Chrysler approved used-car site. Goes without saying this will be a great 2nd hand buy if you can live with the low mpg.

Now you know why I do it online. Right first time and no paperwork to find.
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but taken from a tabloid today,
CRAFTY motorist John Eady dodged speed traps by using an electronic gate-controller which jams police laser guns.
Eady, 61, had the £290 gadget fitted behind the number plate of his £23,000 Range Rover after being caught speeding three times.
Suspicious cops traced the company boss through his registration after getting error messages on their computers as he tore past.
A court heard that, in tests, the gadget made the car invisible to speed guns.
Eady claimed it was installed by mistake when he had a sat-nav system put in ? but a jury heard he learned of the con via the motor trade.
He denied perverting justice but was found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court. He faces a hefty fine and possible ban when he is sentenced next month.

Well, it made me laugh...
S-I-L has recently had a fairly large shunt in her car (BMW 120d) when her hubby hit a large stag in Scotland whilst they were driving up overnight...(apparently the midges are bad in the hills/mountains so the deer are remaining down low).
The hassle she's had getting an alternative vehicle, had me check our policy because we're going up there on tues for 10 days.... and i can't say i'm all that happy with the responses i've had so far.
We drive an estate and fill the thing up..(currently 2 dogs don't help, but at the end of the year a sprog will be added to the list)... so we'd need a an average sized estate as a minimum, for a courtesy car.
when i rang the insurer they 'assured' me that if it's their approved garage, they (the garage) will provide a car and they 'try' to match like for like......yeah right. The other thing is i'd insist on the repairing garage being one recognised by my manufacturer, so the paint warranty would remain, which will probably mean it's not the insurance company's approved one.
I've had this in the past, where the repairing garage couldn't provide a car for 2 weeks, by which time i'd like to think our car would be repaired!
Anyone got any ideas? 2 adults, a baby and it's paraphernalia and 2 dogs will not fit into a Nissan Micra or similar. What do other people do? Is it a case of 'you get what you pay for' and you have to go with a long established insurer or is it knowing what to ask for? I'm not convinced we've got the proper cover at the moment.

cheaper to buy Deer whistles & have em fitted in front of the grill! work very well
I am thinking very seriously about buying a Skoda Octavia (Yes I can't believe it either).
Skoda have an offer on at the moment where they will upgrade you to the next trim level, so you pay for a classic and get ambiente etc, this is 'worth' £1000. What car's target price reckons you should be able to get about £1000 off each model anyway. Do you think that £2000 off is therefore feasible? i am thinking that the first £1000 is funded through Skoda and the second £1000 would be dealer discount.
I am thinking of a 140TDi elegant, the Mrs would quite like the estate, but at the moment that's breaking the budget. (I'd like a Leon FR, but I've been vetoed on the boot size due to baby paraphernalia)
Thanks, Fin

Try a search on Seat Surgeons York - their work appears to be well regarded by people with similar requirments to you.
