One of my pet hates is having to stop at pedestrian-controlled crossings where said pedestrian has pressed the button 'automatically', and crossed whilst the lights are still on green. In due course, the lights turn red, and cars are then obliged to stop at the now-deserted crossing.

Whilst being sorely tempted, I have so far resisted driving through the red lights when it is clearly obvious that no-one is there to use the crossing. Have others also resisted?! Read more

Of course I have told him so several times, with much profanity.

Er, we don't usually drink claret in the pub... And he's a good fellow apart from this luddite approach to traffic flow, which we all know has heavyweight official backing...

Hi all,

Purchased myself a new Cat for my 99T Citroen Saxo the other week so that I could fit it myself, should have been a simple job, just two bolts at the front, two at the back....

Anway when the part came, the holes for the bolts to go through were too big... the holes on the old piece were about the size of a 5p coin, the holes on the new piece are about the size of a 10p coin... so if I put the bolt through, it just pulls straight through - hence doesn't hold the 2 pieces together....

Anyone got any suggestions for a way to get around the problem?

Hope i've described my problem acurately above... if not have a look at www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/images/admin/parts/exha...g

The cross-section pic in the bottom left shows the holes as 20(mm) but the old part is more like 10mm so the bolts fit that size hole...

All advice appreciated by a keen (total) novice...

im sure i used the original bolts and just washered up the large holes, try somewhere like an old fashioned hardware shop if you dont have any washers lurking about,as said they want to be thick as 2 pence pieces

now before i start i am not saying that this would have prevented this incident.

after watching one of the news channels coverage of the terrible events on the m40 yesterday i wonder how many more incidents like this are going to occur until the government realises we need more traffic patrols and less money making flashing things. i mean really, some one getting shot whilst riding along a motorway, welcome to the 21st century Britain.

Yes tack, there were bad things and miscarriages of justice, and yes Stuartli, things were a bit cosier in those days ... I blame human nature, the parents and television more or less in that order.

My brother in law has a ST200 (V plate) and the gas peddle won't return to it's position. He's had a little look but can't seem to find a spring missing. What could be the problem??? Read more

I?ve often heard that to start a car?s engine requires more fuel than leaving it running at a set of traffic lights for a short while? Is this true?

If you have a warm engine, why does it need ?extra? fuel to start it?

If this is true, how long would you need to be waiting at the lights before it becomes more economical to turn the engine off and re-start when the lights go green?

For the purpose of this question, please ignore the fact that you will lose air con whilst the engine is turned off.

It would mean that I would fail to burn the retina's out of the motorist behind me with my bright LEDs if I used the handbrake ;o)

Apply the handbrake and then put your foot on the brake pedal. In fact you could then flash the lights on and off for extra annoyance.

Moving house on Saturday I did several trips round the M25 passing through the variable speed limits that are in place between the M3 and M40.

I am not entirely sure how the speed limits are determined, but there were no incidents on the road, just lowered limits of varying rates.

I understand that the theory is that although obviously cars are travelling faster at NSL, due to the effects of braking, distance between vehicles, etc., you can end up getting MORE traffic flowing through at a LOWER speed limit.

However, when driving through, traffic flows well at 60 and somewhat well at 50, and becomes stop-start at 40mph.

It was quite frustrating to be in the 40mph limit, to be stop-start, and suddenly for the traffic to start flowing well, without any junctions in between, only to see the reason for it - that the gantry ahead has gone up to 60mph, causing cars to travel faster.

When you are on the road, it just seems that the Highways Agency are managing things badly, the 40mph speed limits can surely not serve a useful purpose, and they are holding everybody up.

In the case above where the limit went from 40 to 60, this was shortly after the M4 turnoff (going North), so it might be that the traffic flow before the junction was that much greater, and after the turn-off (say two gantries later), improved flow means they can turn the speeds up.

Still, I'm not convinced that 40 can be faster than 50. And are these limits governed automatically?

Does anybody know?

I also think that if these limits really do improve flow, it would make sense to use SPECS cameras, as that would do a better job of keeping speeds steady, and if this ultimately makes people's journeys shorter, it's a good thing (though the problem with this is the ridiculous 10% overstate that are legally permitted on speedometers - my Volvo seems to be perfectly calibrated, but generally most cars are not).

As part of a Geography fieldwork project, when at school, I spoke to Trafford's Borough Traffic Engineer.

He told me the volume of traffic going along a road I was studying. The volume was at its highest when the traffic was crawling slowly (obviously as it tends towards a solid jam then the flow rate reduces again).

I, personally never use this motorway or at least never use it if I have a deadline to keep. It seems that every day, almost without fail, some incident occurs which causes delays.

I might use it if I were going on holiday in this country, where it would not particurlary matter if I was unable to reach my destination 'on time' but for travel to airports or seaports it's certainly a place to be avoided.

I'd rather set out several hours earlier and travel on 'A' roads or 'B' road where one has at least the opportunity of keeping out of trouble.

Having never experienced it I can make no comment on the actual reason.

Sceptical perhaps rather than sarcastic?

I suppose I'm just intrigued as to why the word noise requires quotation marks at all. It is a real problem for those living in mixed developments.

To some extent the Councils are to blame as they often encourage a mix of retail and residential use where town centre land is being redeveloped (eg Morrison's superstore cheek by jowl with flats when Northampton's cattle market was redeveloped in the late nineties).

Hi john,

Can I pick your brains on this one. Have you ever heard of an omega 2.5 td pump being used in a bmw 525td? What we did [foolishly] was by a replacement omega engine 2.5 td from a 97 model and shoved it into a bmw 525td 95 model [engine and all]. All the connectors were the same and we thought it would work. Not so, we were then told by the local injection pump reconditioner that they are different. Is this true ? and have you ever heard of anyone doing this conversion to make their bmw run?
We are now stuck with an unusable bmw 525 td in good nick but....hope to get it working.
Many thanks

What your pump specialist is quite true & they do differ & it wont run. The spec's are bery different & so are the electrics involved.

Whilst lubricating the lock mech on the Mondeo I noticed that the catch/remote locking motor on the trailing edge of the door is internally connected to the exterior door handle (in addition to the pull lever etc) by a lump of plastic, this is not serving any structural purpose because it is clipped to the catch mech and is loosely fixed to the back of the handle.

I just wonder why it is there? I guess it facilitates manufacture when new allowing a pre-assembled handle and catch to be fitted into the door. Any ideas?
