now before i start i am not saying that this would have prevented this incident.
after watching one of the news channels coverage of the terrible events on the m40 yesterday i wonder how many more incidents like this are going to occur until the government realises we need more traffic patrols and less money making flashing things. i mean really, some one getting shot whilst riding along a motorway, welcome to the 21st century Britain.

which is why i put this at the beginning of the thread. what i'm trying to say is there's simply not enough patrols.

And you then go on to say
>more incidents like this are going to occur until the government realises we need more traffic patrols
at the same time as saying
>now before i start i am not saying that this would have prevented this incident.
I agree that we need much more traffic police. More in fact, we need a dedicated traffic police force. (ones with powers not those toothless highways agency guys)
the shooting thing tho is a bad argument to use.

Quite right TVM.
Surely no one is suggesting that the traffic police should be armed like the ones in the US?
Unless they were, they would have to be bystanders in any serious dispute between Hells Angels, who are not the sort of cosy and well-behaved bikers we are used to on this forum (although they are genuine bikers).

Surely the much vaunted ANPR will be providing details of ALL vehicles that were on that stretch of road at the material time, something no Traffic man could ever do....

We need no more police.
BUT we need more doing frontline work, fewer filling in forms and far fewer doing high publicity arrests where 10 police arrest totally inoffensive people...and then are too busy to answer calls with real offenders..

Don't forget there is still a limit on the cars they can lease and the amount of fuel they are allowed to purchase.

"Normal" Response Officers in my area (covering rural areas) are now being armed with Tasers on routine patrol

Excuse me whilst I go all misty eyed and swing the lamp.........it was all much better in the old days.......they only ever hurt their own......nonces got their come uppance in the pokey..........you could leave your front door open and yer 'ouse would be untouched......you could give a cheeky kid a clip round the ear....and if he complained to his mum, she'd clip the other ear. Ah, that's better!

Not at all tack, plenty of lunatics here, liberty hall up to a point and give or take religion and politics.
And your point was, er, ?

sorry Lud (or should that be m'lud?)....I was being ironic. The notion that more cops on the beat reduces crime is pretty much a fallacy and people tend to hark back to the old days of the bobby on the beat....all seeing, all knowing. I am old enough to remember the Shepherds Bush murders in 1966 when 3 cops were gunned down, and of course Hindley & Brady. These were all in the heyday of policing. Bad stuff happened and will continue to happen.
It is also a given when you are out driving that when something bad is happening, there is never a cop around to see what you saw. Or as a mate of mine says "funny, the things you see when you ain't got a gun in yer 'and".
I think I need a lie down......been a long and bad day today.

Perhaps you are not alone in that. Perhaps it's a mistake still to be standing more or less at this stage of the evening. . .
Sorry tack, covered in shame, dumb of me. Really successful piece of sarcasm on yr part though...:-}

Actually, in my experience at least, you are not as far off the mark as you seem to sarcastically suggest...:-)

Yes tack, there were bad things and miscarriages of justice, and yes Stuartli, things were a bit cosier in those days ... I blame human nature, the parents and television more or less in that order.
