Does car target price come down with dealer offers - Fin
I am thinking very seriously about buying a Skoda Octavia (Yes I can't believe it either).

Skoda have an offer on at the moment where they will upgrade you to the next trim level, so you pay for a classic and get ambiente etc, this is 'worth' £1000. What car's target price reckons you should be able to get about £1000 off each model anyway. Do you think that £2000 off is therefore feasible? i am thinking that the first £1000 is funded through Skoda and the second £1000 would be dealer discount.

I am thinking of a 140TDi elegant, the Mrs would quite like the estate, but at the moment that's breaking the budget. (I'd like a Leon FR, but I've been vetoed on the boot size due to baby paraphernalia)

Thanks, Fin

Thanks PU - didn't know how to alter it once I'd entered.

Fin, the best way to find out is to phone around a few Skoda dealers and ask them what their best price is.

You might find it useful to go on the web beforehand and look at the prices brokers (like Drive the Deal) are quoting. You will find most of the main ones at www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/index.htm?news_id=3380

Well I'm thunderstruck too!! A Skoda??? Let me just try to absorb that a mo...,, ok, ok... I think I've come to terms with it ;)

Seriously though, in general(*) manufacturer offers are additive to dealer discounts (where negotiated), basically Skoda are offering their dealers a free upgrade when they buy a particular spec. level, i.e. the dealer pays Skoda for an Ambiente & gets an Elegance, so whatever they want to sell (or discount) the Elegance for comes out of the Ambiente(!) price.

I owned a Skoda Superb & loved it - only the irritatingly coarse 1.9 pdi uncomfortably coupled with the tiptronic gearbox & 17in alloys prompted an early chop for an alternative (both my mistake - I should have bought a manual Comfort!)

Why not try a broker discount quote (there's a well recommended link on this site) & use or quote that in negotiations. I believe DtD only sources Uk franchise dealer cars - so comparable when you haggle.

(*) - Sometimes 'upgrades' are contingent upon using manufacturer/3rd party finance instruments, so further math is required

There is absolutley no reason not to buy a skoda octavia. No seconds thoughts. Its a very classy well srcewed together pice of kit. It was second choice on my new car list.

I doubt you will get your free upgrade AND your money off. Elegance trim is well worth having - it has the "jumbo box" armrest and mp3 payer input, extra speakers, etc. It makes a difference.

You dont need the estate (i prefer the look of that too) the hatch has a maseef boot anyway, and the inside of the estate is bigger than the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

If the deal is as described, then I don't see why you shoudn't be able to negotiate a deal (£1K off) on a Classic in the normal dealer negotiation way, but then actually get an Ambiente upgrade as provided by Skoda.

If it's one or the other, then the free upgrade is nothing more than a con.

Thanks for advice. I am closing in on final spec and price, the discounts are gradually coming out of the woodwork, but I do have a Leon Cupra to part ex, and that can cloud the numbers - price to change is all that matters.

BTW also looked at nearly new diesel Vrs - but Mrs doesn't like the seats!

Just to let you know that the story has ended happily (I hope).

I've bought a Jan'07 Vrs Tdi Octavia, with upgraded wheels 'Jumbo' box, rear park sensors and rear elec windows. Pick up later in the week. I do have some concerns over the prospect of the seats reamining clean, but otherwise very happy, especally as I spent £1k less than my budget.

Thanks

Fin

Thanks for letting us know. Be good to hear your thoughts on the new car after a couple of weeks.

Fin, if its light coloured seats, similar to my Fabia vrS, you haven't a hope in hell of keeping the seats clean. And you won't be able to clean them yourself either, no matter what you try.
Just budget in £50 odd every few months for a professional valet or put seat covers on!!

Had my VRs TDi a week, went on holiday and have taken the mileage from around 9.5k to 10.5k. Impressions so far?

Engine - lacks torque at low revs, then it arrives like a huge wave. I?ve stalled it twice! 6th gear is very high and 80mph on the m?way is very relaxed. Quite noisy, fuel economy over first 900 miles has been 42.9mpg, about what others seems to get, with a very light right foot I can get 49mpg, but it requires far too much self control, and frankly life?s too short. A great car for overtaking, as long as you get the right revs and catch the wave of torque. The dip stick is appalling ? round, black, and with a tiny distance between min and max.

Interior ? seats comfortable and look good, but that fabric with the tiny hoops may have to go, it looks difficult to clean and non too durable. (Anyone had leather panels sewn in to just the seat base and back, leaving the original leather and suede?) I like the dark grey headlining, all the switches and the dash ? but got quite distracted when I realised that the speedo starts going up in 20?s after 80mph , not 10?s, so 85mph is in fact 90mph (if you see what I mean). The boot is enormous, I went on holiday and didn?t have to bother putting my roof box on.

Exterior- 18? wheels and silver paint give it a sporty, quality look. I wouldn?t change a thing. Stick an Audi badge on and people pay another £5k.
