04 S40/V40 diesels - Some Questions. - trier
Can anyone tell me the maker of the 2004 diesel fitted please? Also, is it reliable and quiet at 80mph? Finally, I have read reports that the early models had hard suspension; was this softened for the later models? thank you.

Trier, will move it over to discussion if you don't get any replies -PU

2004 old shape or new shape?

Old shape had 102 and 115 bhp 1.9 litre common rail engines designed by Renault and improved by Mitsubishi (also flogged as DI-D)

New shape S40/V40 have two different diesel engines in range. The 2 litre 136bhp unit is essentially what Ford now labels as Duratorq and fits to CMAX and new Focus and Peugeot calls 16V HDi and fits to 307 - developed as joint PSA/Ford colaboration. The 180bhp 2.4 D5 diesel on the other hand is Volvos own design, D5244T series.

Not sure about the improved by Mitsubishi bit, the 115 was a fine engine.

Three, also the 1.6 PSA/Ford unit in 110bhp form, all three are very refined, the 2.0 giving a great blend of performance and economy.

...1.6 being diabolical with design flaws.

...2.0 being plagued by ERG valve and software problems (much better on later models but earlier ones terrible)

What the heck gives you that idea, it is basically the same unit as the 2.0?

Plagued is an exageration, limited number of problems it seems.

The inspection report on my S240 1.6D which stated flaws in the design which had resulted in it breaking down several times in it's first 3,000 miles, shortly followed by rejection of the car. That's what the heck gives me that idea.

But you obviously know better than my first hand experience.... (shakes head).

They're notorious for EGR failures. Like I said, later ones with the modified valve much better, but early ones were terrible.

Bit pointless arguing the toss over the 1.6 and 2.0 units as it's the previous generation car he's talking about (title S40/V40).
It'll be the 1.9 diesel unit. No experience of it myself so can't really comment. Even the CBCB doesn't say much about these diesels.

Best bet is to logon to the VOC website where they have a section there dedicated to this model.

He also says 2004, which was the new generation.

Not as a V40 it wasn't.

What are you on about? They didn't make V40's in 2004.

I don't know how different the diesel engine is in 04 plate S40 than 98 the one I've! Mine's got 127k miles on it and its still going strong. I bought it with 113 on clock and touchwood so far its been spot on. Engine is noisy when cold but once its up to the norm temperature its fairly quiet and pulls really well on the motorway. I hope it helps.

Yours is most probably previous unit - 90bhp D4192T otherwise known as Renault's F8Q, they were later upped to 95bhp and discontinued in 2000.

It is a good engine with a good reputation in many different cars, unless there is anything specifically wrong with the Volvo installation then I dont think your one-off experience is typical.

They're notorious >>

Notorious is even more of an exageration than plagued !!

Well, put it this way. It's notorious enough for most discussions around the 2.0 PSA engine to contain posts referring to EGR valve problems.

It's notorious enought for most of HJ's Car-by-car breakdowns for vehicles fitted with PSA diesels to have a cautionary mention of EGR problems.

You use whatever word you like.... those of us with an understanding of English would use "notorious".
