I am not an exhaust expert, but often I have seen fitters take an oxy-acetylene torch to the exhaust joints as they have seized solid.

SO you may need one of these...and be familar with using it underneath the car (where any slip ups could spell disaster)...as well as axle stands, but a pit or ramp maybe better. I guess you can do something with a hack saw maybe, but I've never seen this done.

Also the difference in price between buying one yourself and driving somewhere and getting one fitted maybe small. Many exhaust centres get trade or bulk discount prices not always available to individuals.

IMHO if you have the equipment and you can get a good price for an exhaust then go for it, otherwise it maybe lots of hassle just to save £5 or £10.

I'd go to a fast fit with a guarantee. DIY not worth the hassle...

I've done it myself before - it's not worth it - go to a fast fit or if you can get a good deal for the bits from a motor factor get a known good indie to fit it, they'd welcome an easy (for them and their kit) job.

I did this on my old Cavalier once, and only after I spent a whole afternoon doing it did I realise I'd only saved about a tenner. Not worth the hassle. Everything will be covered in carp and rust, nothing will come undone easily, and separating exhaust joints without deforming the section of pipe you intend to keep is not easy.

Just go to your local fast fit place and sup a coffee while they get on with it.

I doubt if the box will be more than £40 from gsf or eurocarparts. Why not see how much it would cost to have fitted and then decide. I have changed the back box and middle section on my 406, not exactly difficult. I know I saved about £60 on the middle section alone compared to any of our local fitting places.

You can usually cut the pipe in front of the box and sleeve it-tho' if the box has gone the pipe won't be far behind.

If the 306 is anything like the 106 I look after, this job will be dead easy. Unlike most car makers who fit joints which cannot easily be parted, the PSA vehicles have blunt male and female cones formed on the ends of the pipes, fixed by a circumferential clamp. Even if you have to sacrifice the clamp (usually a new nut and bolt will do) the whole lot comes apart very easily. The silencer just hangs on rubber mounts and can be fitted without tools. I changed the 106 rear silencer in about 15 mins using just a couple of spanners.

Don't let any vehicle near a fast-fit place for any reason whatsoever.

659 is right, PSA exhausts are a doddle. I can get oe exhausts via a contact in the trade for about the same cost as a fitted aftermarket replacement. For the sake of about half an hours work, including fag break I have oe part quality for quick fit price.

As someone who used to renew my exhausts myself,i have to agree with the others,it`s not worth the hassle. Go to an exhaust specialist.

Thanks for the info guys, i will have to take a closer look at the type of fitment then by the sounds of things, i know what you mean about taking it to a exhaust centre, have done that already, they told me i need a new middle section, my shocks also need looking at and new rear shoes as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a £60 job turns into a £MEGA job at some of these fast fit centres - {name generalised - DD}.

I kinda agree with the middle section bit as the previous owner decided to patch weld the joint between mid and back box so fitting the rear box is going to be trouble unless i use a flexi fitment, ie cut out the nasty end to the mid section add a flexi fit and fit a new back box.

Anyone got any views on FLEXI FITMENTS, u find then on a well known auction site for about £9.00

Your thoughts are always welcome

Cheers for looking
