The problem with doing the research is that it could very easily have produced evidence, perhaps even overwhelming evidence, that they have saved no lives.

Imagine the embarrassment.

Best thing to do is the cancel the research, as that way it'll never be proven, and the Govt. can continue pumping out the message that cameras work.

I have bought a Mini 1000 1991/J which I collect at the weekend which although MOT'd will be subject to a rolling restoration. I have some very limited arc welding experience but need to know which type of welder will be best for this type of work. Makes to avoid would be useful too as I dont want to waste money on the wrong or poor quality kit.

Cheers

I have a 1999 old shape 1700 diesel van and have bought an old shape mini 1000.
I have arranged a trailer that is not a full sized car trailer and need to know if the van will be able to legally tow the car and trailer ok. I need to find the weight of the trailer I know but I get the feeling it will be too heavy to tow legally. The Vauxhall handbook gives such vague info on towing it is as good as useless.
Thanks

Does the trailer have a max gross weight marked on it's plate? There should be a max train weight on the van's spec plate [under the bonnet?]

That's all that matters with a commercial; if the gross train is OK to cover the van and trailer's combined gross weight them you're legal.

I've noticed for last couple of days that if I get stuck in traffic and don't move my car for few minutes the temperature guage needle start moving upwards. I noticed it yesterday and it was fairly close to the red area so I turned on the hot air to maximum and it brought the needle down somewhat. I just want to know is it something to worry about? I got the car serviced couple of weeks ago and changed the coolant too. Coolant level seems to be fine. My mechanic mate also checked that radiator fan kicked in when he serviced the car.

The water has to be going somewhere. If it isn't leaking externally then its either leaking internally (into sump) or into combustion chamber (head). Personally I would hazard at guess at head gasket.
Get it to any MoT station and ask them to wave their 4-gas analyser over the header tank - that's a quick on the spot test.

Hi all, just wondering if anyone has had a problem with the fan belt on the v6 vectra engines.
Mine is a 1998 registered 2.5 and has to date covered just over 56000 miles with a full service history carried out at every interval but about 6 months ago the fan belt started shredding from the offside and eventually working in every time it had a bit of throttle until i had about 1cm left. I had it changed and thought no more until four weeks ago the same happened, had it changed once again thinking perhaps a dodgy belt or just a coincidence but now 12 days later and about 300 miles covered this ones done the same.
Obviously there seems to be a problem with one of the pulleys but there are i think seven to choose from, alternator, a/c, etc etc.
Any help on this matter would be much appreciated as i don't wanna spend a small fortune on a car thats probably only worth 1500 quid tops and i'm too nice to sell it to someone with this problem without telling them.
Many thanks in advance, GRANGIEV6. Read more

and for the tyres if it was underinflated which i don't
think it is why is it only the front tyres and
not the back

In your first two years and 13,000 miles, how many times did you check the tyre pressures? "You dont think it is?" if you checked them you would be able to say "they are not"

Hi First post
Just got a Ford KA 2005 5000 miles on clock.
Had this problem 4 times now seems like the engine is revving up and down continuously at the lights,Without any feet on the pedals
Engine stalled and when re started did not occur, but it has since happened 4 times now.
Took it to Ford garage and they had it for a few hours and said it was an undiagnosed fault !!!??
has any body experienced this or got an idea ? Read more

I had weeks of fun with my old 306 when the idle valve was sticking. In most cases it's an actual mechanical fault with the valve physically sticking, and the electrical bits are actually OK. In this case, it doesn't log a fault code (and hence doesn't show up on the diagnostic rigs). This renders many dealer service departments clueless.

It took eleven visits to the dealer to get mine sorted out before I finally found a technician worthy of the title who diagnosed and fixed it within an hour. I had got to the point where I refused to drive the car any more after a spell in rush hour traffic on the M42 with the car revving itself between 3,000 and 4,000 RPM, to the disgusted look of other motorists in the queue.

Took the Legacy in for 36k service.
I told them about about a slight vibration I've been feeling when braking.
They said they had found a slight lip on the front discs but it wasn't anything to worry about and they ground the pads down a little to get a good bonbd betwween pad and disc.
Drove off next day (50 miles later) I'm tooling along a country lane and making good progress, not hard driving by any means, go into bend and find the wheel is vibrating really hard as if wheel nuts were loose.
Get it back into delaership who say the discs are worn its's not warranty work and new ones will cost me £200 and something VAT
Call Subaru tech dept who speak to dealer who is now "skimming" the discs under warranty. I get the car back tomorrow.

Any thoughts? Dealer says discs can wear out in under 40k miles - i suggested to him that this was not the case and if they are worn, how is skimming metal off the surface going to help?

This is a main dealer who hasn't been with Subaru long and the car is under warranty having been bought as an approved vehicle.

I have a Sub outback which now has 53000 on the clock. I replaced the (all) brake pads at 51000. The rears did not need it but did them anyway. The rotors are good for at least another 50K. There IS a problem with your brakes, whether self , heavy foot or "riding the pedal" or whatever. NO the brakes should be good for more than 40K unless some of the forementioned are true,
