Police using Automatic Number Plate Recognition have identified 70 drivers who were in the area at the time of the crash and asked them to come forward.

They hope the letters they have sent out will jog the memories of people who may have information which could assist the investigation.

Have a 2000 Pug 306 1.4lx and there has been a knocking/vibrating noise coming from the passenger footwell for the last couple of days. Not evident when I am driving wit the accelorater depressed or in neutral, but if I cruise (car in gear but cruising wit my foot off the accelrator) it vibrates and almost sounds like something is catching.
Had a neighbour who is a mechanic have a drive and he has suggetsed the gearbox is knackered which i find hard to understand as its bin fine up to press.car still goes into gear ok.
Car done just over 74,000 miles although bin serviced regularly.Just had MOT and had replacement brake pad and hose.
Any ideas coz gear box could cost me over £400.
P.S Drive shaft went last Sept but once replaced all ok. Read more

I've known of two of these 1.4 boxes going. One on a 306 at 40,000 miles, and one on a Xsara at 30,000 miles. Both were differential failures, the former (like you) experiencing a knocking only when cruising.

Hi Folks

I've got an ageing (1996) Merc 300d estate which has just decided to throw a minor wobbly with the ABS. All seems to work OK but if the speed is increased above about 80mph - on a private road, of course - the ABS warning lamp comes on and won't go off unless the ignition is switched off. It then remains off until the speed goes over 80 mph again. The only other symptom is a couple of light taps under your foot just as the car comes to a halt, ie at about 1mph, or less. Nothing locks up, though.

Have I got a duff wheel speed rotation sensor?

Regardless of that, is there an on-line source of spares anyone can recommend?

If you go to any European countries, you'll mostly see local brand cars!

Example:

France - Citroen, Peugeot, Renault
Germany - Mercedes, Audi, VW etc.
Sweden - Volvo, Saab (Merc & Audi pretty well too)
Spain - Seat (and Skoda too)
Czech Rep - Skoda
Netherlands - mostly European cars

even USA - Ford, GM etc. (though many people buying Jap/Euro brands now)

But see in Britain...

Rarely you see British cars (well, they are out of reach for most of us)
but probably you won't see more Japanese/Korean cars anywhere!!!

Vauxhall will eventually quit Ellesmere Port - it's just a matter of time. The Japanese are expanding here, the Americans are contracting.

I have today taken delivery of my 'new' N plate Defender 90. it has had little, if any, off road use but the paintwork looks tired. Any ideas on how best to rejuvenate?
I hope I can sell my VW Transporter soon as I cannot afford to run 2 vehicles, and the LR was too good to miss, having been run by my local school for the last 6 years and maintained regardless of cost.

Once when serving Queen and country I wrote a SWB air portable version off by landing its saddle tank supports on a ridge line ........didn't realise until the MT Sargeant pointed it out - we jointly managed to apportion the blame to a vehicle pool so i kept my commission and the sargeant got a fair bit from me.

Passed one of those Nissan Primeras from a few years back with the paint that changes colour according to the angle at which you view it. So far as I recall I have only ever seen this on Nissans and TVRs.

The colours always seemed to be a sludgy purple/green/brown combination which is possibly why the idea died out. Any one know if other colours were tried?

They use coloured mica flakes instead of aluminium flakes in the
paint.

Californian customisers used to use paint with fish scales in it and about 50 coats of clear lacquer... Beautiful, but you would be a bit reluctant to risk the thing on the street...

Just spoke to BiL. He went to Brighton and back today via M25 from somewhere near Wembley. Says car is now claiming to have averaged 61mpg, and fuel level hasn't gone down much (although of course like everyone else he knows what a snare and delusion fuel gauges can be).

He says that peering between the plastic cover and the side of the engine compartment he can see that there's a large component attached to the exhaust manifold or downpipe, but it looks like a box rather than a snail. Perhaps the turbo is inside a box.

My front brake discs and pads need replacing on my 2001 Fiat Punto ELX JTD. I would like to tackle this job myself but was unsure as to how specialised this job is.

Does anyone have experience of changing discs on this car??

Many thanks

Does anyone know the state of these 'blue' super-white bulbs as far as the MOT goes? My Focus was eating bulbs at a rate so I bought a full set on Ebay (the 'super white' type etc) which have a bluish tint to the bulb glass. I wouldn't normally bother but they were cheap and 'E' marked so I though what the hell.

When my car had its MOT done last week, it was failed on the two sidelights because of the tint (both bulbs were working) but the main beam bulbs weren't mentioned?

Seems a bit odd - after all the light isn't blue (and isn't any brighter than the normal bulbs to be honest) so why pick on the sidelights and not the main beams?

It was a £2 extra on the MOT so I doubt the garage is trying to pull a fast one.

Sidelight bulbs generally emit yellow light. The way I see it, the blue paint on the bulb (for that is all it is on the cheap sidelight bulbs) is simply there to recolour the light to a more pleasing K-rating.

I had blue-tinted sidelights on the Hyundai, and they just shone pure white really.

Not really worth it though -- they're about £2 each, and the standard bulbs are 50p. And because the standard bulbs are higher quality they last longer. The blue bulbs are just a chav special and I won't be silly enough to buy any again :)
