Magneti-Marelli make many different types of alternator. If it's the most common, the A127, [there should be a label on the side with numbers] then the brushes are in the cast-alloy regulator on the back which has one internal plug and is held in with three long 4mm screws.

The whole reg is dirt cheap and can even be changed in-situ.

I will shortly be replacing the timing belt and water pump on my Polo.

Question is should I stick with genuine VW parts or pattern ones? If I go the pattern route I would use someone like GSF.

The parts in question are 1) timing belt, 2) tensioner, 3) water pump.

Price from GSF is circa £65 and from VW circa £85.

I would prefer to use genuine parts, but if there is no difference then I would also like to save £20!

The car is a 'bangernomics' project and I want to keep it going for as long as possible, for as little as possible.

Advice please. Read more

VW Parts carry a 2 year parts and labour warranty, even
if fitted by a non VW garage, I don't think that
includes DIY, but not sure. As long as you get Gates,
Contitech or something used by car manufacturers, I'm sure they'll be
fine.

There is a sting in the VW warenty for them to honour it even if fitted by DIY or independent VW want the vehicle ispected with the faulty part still attached then they will dismantle ,inspect then if they agree its faulty will replace free of charge. They will not just supply the part.

... yes, the scenery is stunning. And it would be if you hit it at 170.

Hi everyone, just recently the there has been a screeching noise when lifting up the clutch pedal, it doesnt happen all the time, but is a bit annoying. The car is a 52 plater 1.6 Ghia, with about 40000 miles on the clock. Secondly there is a ticking noise coming from the engine bay that gets louder when you accelerate, again it just an annoying noise that doesnt affect the driving of the car. Many thanks in advance :) Read more

the noise when using the clutch could be caused by somthing known as clutch scroop, its just as the clutch wears & the friction surfaces become polished they resonate, simular to when you drag your hand over a polished table .No need to worry

Hi there,

I have a 2006 2.0T grand scenic petrol, i was driving home from dropping my kids off the other day when the car suddenly lost power, regained power, and then went into "limp home" mode, not allowing me to rev over 3000rpm nor allowing me to go over 30mph.
Whilst all this was going on, the dashboard read "CHECK INJECTION", follwed by "CHECK ESP/ASR" followed by the following warnings "CHECK OIL" "CHECK LAMBDA SENSOR" "GAS" "FILL WASHER FLUID",
i pulled over, switched the engine off, and then back on again, NOTHING, no evidence that there was ever a problem! This has happened about 5 or 6 times now, i have taken it to renault, they seem 2 feed me the same bull that its just a ghost error and wipe the ecu, has anybody else had this probelm, and does anybody know what is causing it,

Cheers Read more

It is true that overvolts can cause similar effects, and its also possible for bad/intermitant earths to cause blown bulbs!

Hi,

I have got a 10 Months old Focus 1800 TDCi which we love. Ford have sent details about extended the warranty to 5 years or 100k for £500 with QBE. The warranty has to be taken out in the 1st year or 20k and includes 7 days car hire after the 1st 24 hours..

We do intend keeping the car for 5 years, so want peoples advice about the Ford Protect warranty. Will it be better than a third party warranty if I need to claim? I help look after a small pool of company cars and ahve never had a problem with Ford warranty, except the length of time to source parts.

I have seen packages that include warranty, tyre replacement and servicing. Are these good value?

regards

Barry
