I get an error 404 on that link - anyone else get this?

It was the full stop at the end of the link that stopped it working. It should work now that I've removed it.

a} regarding the article I think Malthus's theories might well kick in.

b} what is this "rich world"? Is it PC speak for 1st World? What are the 2nd and 3rd World now called?

c} as a Londoner I hate the concept of the congestion charge even though I am exempt from it. I can't really see that it has had much affect (if you charge a non-Oyster card holder £5 odd on the tube for a day pass what is another £3 on top for the convenience and peace), although I will admit that since the latest extension has gone in place, traffic around Wandsworth Bridge Road and New Kings Road has dramatically tailed off in the morning. I do not know where this has been displaced to (I think possibly Fulham Palace Road) but I am sure that it has been displaced rather than reduced. Also now that the area is so much bigger, so many more people are eligible for the 90% reduction thus the fiscal "punishmnet" for driving in the CC area has disappearead.

The centre rear seatbelt stalk has stopped working, probably due to ingress of mini jelly baby. We don't use it much anyway but it'll be an MOT failure. I can't see any way to open it up at all,can you get replacements from a dismantler or is there a law forbidding sale of used safety belts? Read more

I hope it wasn't too hot, jelly babies have rights as well as humans!

Just a quick question - am I alone in spending time washing and hoovering a car before an MOT? It's a ritual I've always done (like to show the car is looked after) but my wife reckons I'm wasting my time. When I picked up my car today (passed!) I noticed a car going through the MOT which was caked in mud. Surely testers are more likely to fail filthy cars if things are on the borderline???

Just interested to know if I'm the only one who couldn't take a dirty car to the garage? Read more

As well as the relevant mechanical bits being clean enough for an inspection, HGV testing stations now ask that the cab be clean enough for a seat belt inspection.
They also insist that no dogs are in the cab during the inspection.

Just seeing if anyone has had the problem of a creaking clutch on the Honda Accord. My car has done around 27,000 miles and is developing an audible creak, which can also be felt through the pedal, on depressing the clutch. A quick look on the web (and at the CBC breakdown) makes me wonder whether this is a clutch master cylinder fault. The problem is intermittent but gets progressively worse on long journeys (no probs with gear selection however).

I've 2 months left of my Honda Approved Used warranty and I'm taking it in next week, just like to be armed with the best info so if anyone's had this let me know. Would be keen to know whether there are any TSBs about this.

Thanks in advance, all help appreciated. Read more

Just to update this - took car to dealer who are replacing clutch master cylinder under warranty. A known problem in Accords, may be useful to know to anyone else with one of these (otherwise faultless!) cars.

I was just wondering how many miles people are getting out of a tank on 306 hdi,

the reason being im getting 620miles out of a 60 litre tank which im quite pleased with but just want to compare to others. Ive been told ive got 2 'dripping' injectors causing some slight rattle and smoke under load. However, if the economy is withing normal limits its not bad enough to worry about

I get 650 out of my 1.9d, although I do spend a while at the fuel pump getting as much in as possible.

Is there a market for a Mini Clubman?

AFAIK, the original Minis were much cheaper comparatively than now and they appealed to a wider "working man" class than now and therefore the Clubman version was a useful MIni to have.

But this new version, only one rear passenger door and the two van-like doors at the rear? Surely the new Mini appeals to the type of buyer whao aspires to have a Cooper S or similar, not to someone who would want the practicality of two swing doors?

Or will BMW produce this in limited numbers to try and make it a cult classic? Read more

Hi,

I have a 1988 fiat Ducato van with 125,000 miles on the clock. The engine is the 2.0 petrol unit.

I have been advised the cambelt has been changed by the two previous owners. I have been given approx

cost of £200 to replace the cambelt. Please could you tell me:-

Is this price I should pay?

Does anyone know where I could get this done properly at a cheaper price in the London / Sussex or Surrey
area?

Thanks.

Mike. Read more
