Since the 60000 mile service, replacement of the rear silencer and exhaust, a build-up of static results in a very large 'bang' when the radio is on. This happens anytime after switching on, sometimes within seconds and other times several minutes. It also happens if a CD is playing. Any ideas on how to stop this? Read more
Hi All,
My husband decided to change the glow plugs in our old diesel Mondeo. Unfortunately, in between swearing and ranting between plug changes, he managed to break the thermostat housing adjacent to the glow plugs. I'm not sure if it's the housing - it's the small rubber plug in which there is a spring. It's simply come away & so the guage doesn't work. He's tried superglue (which worked for 10 minutes before it popped off) but, I guess, the spring delivers a lot of pressure as the engine warms-up. He's too proud to ask himself so, beyond going out and buying a new unit, is there anyway of exacting a repair to this - it would work fine if he could just keep the rubber plug in place. It's a mk2 diesel Mondeo - an expensive repair would probably not be cost-effective. Thoughts, ideas and general sharing of my husband's lack of ability in all things car-like are welcome!

I had a situation a few years back, I was second in a queue at some lights, an ambulance came up behind and squeezed through and across the lights, as he crossed the lights they turned green, the van in front of me followed the ambulance across the lights, I followed the van, the van slammed on his brakes, I bumped the van, the driver apologised "sorry mate, I thought I was following the ambulance through a red light". He then admitted being done for jumping the same lights previously which he said had probably made him over react.
A minor bump, my number plate was not even cracked, clearly my fault for hitting the rear of the van though the van driver was clearly not paying due care and attention, imagine my surprise when I got a solicitors letter relating to a whiplash injury!
Might be best to leave it to your insurer and put it down to experience.
I found this on a link from the 'Car Talk' site. No explanatory text - does anyone have any info. on it? The aftermath of a flood or earthquake?

Best advert I've seen on the tv for months....Channel 4 tonight. Wonderful score by Ennio Morricone taken from (I think) 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'...although I may be confusing it with that other Sergio Leone classic 'Once Upon a Time in the West'. Two of the greatest westerns ever made.
Well done advertising agency & Nissan.

A quick google - "For a few dollars more"
Oh for goodness sake.
"All ministerial journeys are carbon neutral" quoth the PM's spokesman.
What on earth does this mean? At best, it means that the fuel is a bio fuel - so it turns current CO2 into current carbon-based fuel... but no doubt using coal-generated electricity to undertake the chemical processing.
At worst, it presumably means that they are patronising some 'noble savage' (Rousseau, qv) somewhere to plant a couple of trees which might absorb some of the carbon from the air. So they are turning fossil carbon into current carbon - albeit currently trapped in a tree - which will be released back to the atmosphere the moment our 'noble savage' needs to boil a kettle. Moreover the CO2 produced in the ministerial journey will not be reabsorbed at the same time as the journey, nor even in the same year, but presumably with a considerable lag.
What tosh. And these people who are 'conservative with the truth' govern us. Read more

I have come across this company that does extremely good rates on breakdown cover. For £59 you can get cover for both UK and most of Europe. They will even cover older cars (20 years). Cover is provided by Europ Assistance who I would imagine are very good.
NB. I have no connection with this company and can't comment on their competence.
Might be useful to people planning their summer holidays and/or run older cars. Read more
