Looks like you have had a pretty serious electrical malfunction the answer is a good auto electrician otherwise you will be stabbing in the dark. The initial problem to blow the main fuse could have caused a cascade of other problems a dead short across the HT side is favourite Alternator, starter, battery being the most likely culprits.

CarBeginner

Am I correct in thinking that to qualify for the 3 year Warranty, the car must be serviced at a Renault garage? Looking at buying one approx 2 years old.
Thanks. Read more

Xileno {P}

And there lies the problem - will the non-Renault garage know what the exact servicing requirements are? In my opinion it's just not worth the risk, for the sake of paying more and having it done at Renault and then not having to worry about having a claim bounced. Peace of mind and all that.

Once it's out of warranty, then of course do as you please.

stumped

i have a renault scenic 98 , the problem is that the rear doors and the boot wont open, wether the the buttons are up or down, wont even open from the inside, any suggestions? the central locking seems to work on the other doors fine, Read more

The Doctor

Sounds like the child locks are activated on the rear doors, which is why you can't open them from the inside.
Did the boot and doors not opening happen at the same time? Had any work carried out on the central locking system recently?

What happens if the couriers refuse to deliver because there is
nowhere legal to stop and tell the occupiers to collect their
mail!

Are Royal Mail vans similarly not allowed to deliver parcels and letters to premises situated on yellow lines? I thought they had a legal obligation to deliver anywhere. Does Postman Pat often get booked?

Just typed out a long post but Internet Explorer just lost all, so this will be brief.

Last week a foreign lorry changing lanes crashed into my Clio (1996, 5dr, 1.2, just under 70k) at 40mph. I now have a big dent in the passenger front door (car is still drive able). It was completely his fault, he didn't speak any English, but from his body language and actions I assume he and his insurance will accept liability.

Obviously my car isn't worth much (£500, maybe more) so the cost of repair has the possibility of being higher than it's worth and therefore an insurance write off. Last Feb for the MOT I had a big service and a major belt changed (sorry can't remember which), the car still fine and would hopefully should for a while yet.

While doing the quote I've asked the garage to have a quick look over the car to see if the car is likely to pass next months MOT and if it looks like it will keep going for a while yet. Assuming they say yes and I'm not being fussed about dents, what are likely scenarios? If the insurance say it is a write off, is there any way of keeping the car and a significant percentage of the cash? If they provide the money for the repair, can I pocket the cash and leave the dent?

Sorry for the ignorance. I look forward to your advice.

jimbob101 have you still got the log book for this car then?

Yes, I just sent a copy of it and the MOT. At the end of August I phoned the VOASA and they said they looked up the car on their database and they said it was clear.

Our much loved Pug 205 1.4 Cabrio (85,000 miles) has started smoking on startup from cold, once reved a couple of times the smoke clears an it runs just fine with no loss of performance and no further smoking. I suspect valve stem oil seals need renewing. Is this a fairly straightforward job without removing the head? Read more

piston power

whip off the head and do a job right!! while your there clean those good old valves and piston tops, probably need a skim, rebuild with new coolant and fresh oil&filter.good luck

As per title, really, does anyone know if / when the Jetta will get the PD170?

VW UK and my local dealer can't say.

I'd be surprised if not, it's already in the Passat, Seat Leon, Octavia vRS etc .... Read more

Dulwich Estate

I dropped off a family member at London's Kings Cross railway station on a very quiet Sunday lunchtime. There was nowhere to park adjacent to the station and it didn't seem reasonable to get my passenger to walk across a 4 lane main road from the closest legal parking spot - which as it happens was full up anyway.

I know it's red route but the road is 4 lanes wide at that point with no-one about and I mean no-one, so I did not upset any other traffic. My car was stopped for all of 10 seconds as the passenger jumped out and ran into the station.

Ken Livingstone clearly thinks I am an absolute menace to the clear flowing traffic of Central London. Today I got £100 charge (£50 off if paid within 14 days) and two black and white clear pictures of my car with the door open.

Of course there's no point in fighting it - after all it says No Stopping.

Nevertheless this is just sheer utter madness and another £50 so they can go and buy more sticks to beat us with. Read more

All this is a sad sign of 'modern Britain' in reality we are a country going backwards, where has the common sense gone? It is a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. My local IAM group reported that motorists are being charged entering a bus lane to let emergency service vehicles pass, when these kind of situations occur you know that this country urgently needs change if not it is finished the word democracy no longer applies in the UK.

Superbly reliable Corolla 2001, 30k on the clock.

Semi-synthetic engine oil has been used all along. Thinking of changing to fully synthetic oil. Any comments / things to watch out? Read more

oilrag

Well, of course fully synthetics a better oil...... But really all it needs is the spec in the handbook.

It not going to be cost effective in the long run, but it *feels* better having fully synthetic in.

More important (IMHO) is to change the oil and filter every 6,000 miles regardless of mileage.

But thats just my opinion and is not evidence based. To be honest, if you do what it says in the handbook, thats good enough :)

The manifold gasket is blowing on my car (weeks before I plan to sell!!)

Any quick fix solutions eg. sealant or similar, or do I need to bite the bullet.

Inlet or exhaust manifold?

If it is his Vectra, then more than likely it will be the latter. Not uncommon for one of the corner studs to shear off.
