Valve Stem Oil Seals - Pug 205 1.4 - geoff1248
Our much loved Pug 205 1.4 Cabrio (85,000 miles) has started smoking on startup from cold, once reved a couple of times the smoke clears an it runs just fine with no loss of performance and no further smoking. I suspect valve stem oil seals need renewing. Is this a fairly straightforward job without removing the head?

There are two ways of doing it. The point of course is to avoid dropping the valve into the cylinder when you release the spring.
1) is with compressed air and a suitable adaptor in the plug hole
2) is the rope trick - feed a length of string into the cylinder, then compress it by turning the crankshaft. Lock the crankshaft to wedge the valve in place with the compressed string, then when finished pull the string out and move on to the next cylinder.

If you release the piston about 1/4 " with the spring removed you can also assess the side play in the valve/guide, which may help you decide whether the seal job is worth doing on its own..
I don't know this particular engine, but you will need to contrive some kind of compressor to hold the valve spring down while you release the collets or clip on the stem. Plug every single oil way etc with rags, to avoid dropping bits inside the engine.

whip off the head and do a job right!! while your there clean those good old valves and piston tops, probably need a skim, rebuild with new coolant and fresh oil&filter.good luck
