Bear with me here, but I'm wondering as to the feasibility of making my own pollen filter housing for my car. The current arrangement has 4 (Yes, 4) parts, not including the filter.
My old Fiesta had a box with a lid. You took the old filter out, and put a new one in. I don't know what the VAG designers were smoking when they designed the abomination on my car, but I think I could do better.
How easy is it to get plastic parts moulded, or made from diagrams?

hi
im brand new out of the box to this so be gentle
I have a 2001 406 hdi 110bhp with 77k on, today following an hours drive i went through a deep puddle slowly and then within 100yds parked up to visit relatives.
On my return to car it was underpowered and revs would not go above 2000, they then picked upto 3000 with loads of blue smoke out the back. after a few miles and loads of high revs which produced loads of black staining on the road all seems well again, no smoke no power problems.
Had car 18 months and covered 15k trouble free, was this the puddle or is there something going wrong, has it righted itself or do i need to be checking anything. Due to take car to france soon so dont want any problems.
any advice appreciated.

Although we live in a wet climate, and rain and poor road maintenance are a commonplace of British lfe, cars are not now designed to go through puddles.
My 1991 Golf Mk2 GTD (1600cc Turbo Diesel) has rev counter, when I accelerate the counter drops to Zero, and will not go over 5ooo which is the tick over, regardless of what I do, the other day the battery was flat although the car is used every day. No warning lights were illuminated on the dash.
Can anyone tell me how the rev counter works ?
Is it linked to an electrical fault
Feels like the battery isnt getting enough charge
Car runs great otherwise
Any help gratefully recieved Read more
Screwloose, sorry i did not get back to you, problem solved in a way, saturday afternoon Alternator packed up all together - battery lights on- rev counter dead as a dodo. Going in today for fixing. Thanks for trying to help - much appreciated
The traffic announcements start up on my Gamma radio but have stopped after a fraction of a second over the last two days.
Anyone else had this problem or is it likely to be a local fault with the RDS network (North East Derbyshire / Staffordshire)?

I had the same thing on the Mondeo on Monday morning driving to work along the M3 / M25, picking up traffic reports from BBC Berks, BBC London and BBC SCR.
Seemed better driving home in the evening, and has been OK ever since.
I thought my radio was on its way out.
One of my staff has a P reg Xantia 1.9 TD .
Between the seats is a built in console with gear lever ,handbrake , coin and key tray ,suspension adjuster and ashtray at the back.
So he gets to work , puts the handbrake on , picks up his office keys from the tray and then accidentally drops them down a gap which appears when the handbrake is on full into the channel underneath.
He cannot work out how to get them out , any suggestions as to how to get to the channel without destroying the console gratefully received.

If the front calipers & handbrake cables are in good condition then there should be no need what so ever to adjust a Xantia handbrake.
Normally its the handbrake part of the caliper sticking or a cable stretching / snapping that causes the issues with the Xantia ( unless it missed the very early Xantia handbrake lever rachet recall )
An autotrader advert states,
CAT D TOTAL LOSS DAMAGED TO NEARSIDE DOORS AND WINGS
ALL EXPERTLY REPAIRED WITH 6 MONTHS WARRANTY FROM REPAIRING
What does this mean?
thanks

HJ himself said " Think of Cat D like this:
A car is worth £6,000, but sustains some minor cosmetic damage.
The damage will cost £2,500 for an (inflated price) insurance repair that includes the cost of a courtesy car for the owner while the repair takes place.
But the insurer can sell the car off as it is for £4,000.
So the insurer 'writes it off' as a Cat D, saving itself £500, even though the car may be perfectly drivable and suffers only cosmetic damage.

I don't know about "scuffing", but it was quite common for these (and mk2's) to exhibit a brief "moaning" noise as the clutch was first engaged after a period of inactivity.
Used to happen on some mk3 / 4 Escorts as well.
Has anyone driven the new 407 / 607 with the twin-turbo 2.2 diesel?
My company car is due for replacement in the next few months, and I'd be interested in any driving impressions, as the engine's coming to the new Mondeo
when it hits the UK later this year.
Currently have a Passat PD130 with 6-speed box, which has been great, I'm very fond of the motor's punch, performance and 50+mpg on a run.
I don't like the "new" Passat's looks so that's out of the running, and I've also tried the Accord and 3-series. Not tried the Avensis yet.
thanks, Craig Read more
So, people have purchased Passats for visual appearance. VAG will be pleased (and surprised).
Hi all,
Decided to order all new parts for my pollen filter setup and was given another part (On the left of the photo) which I don't recognise.
tinyurl.com/y4tyuj
According the printout SEAT gave me it attaches to the pollen filter 'frame' on the right.
I don't see how it does though. I didn't even order this part, I ordered a new rubber 'boot' that goes over the top but seeing as it could be that my car is missing this part, I took it.
Anyone have any ideas?! Read more
I shall be in the fortunate position of being paid to visit Japan later this year to visit automotive factories and suppliers. Its a extended version of a trip I did in late 2005.
Since I will have quite a bit of time to spare, I thought I'd take the opportunity to take my son with me and we'll do the trip by rental car. Unfortunately information is proving very hard to find. There is lots of (English) information on travelling in Japan by train and bus, but not much on driving.
I need to visit the Tokyo/Yokohama area for a few days, then Oppama, Atsugi, have a 'cultural' break in Kyoto, then Toyota City and finally end up at Hiroshima. I could really do with some kind of 'Japan by Car' guidebook, anyone seen anything like this?
Last time I went I had a rental car in Tokyo, it had what appeared to be a very good GPS system, but I couldn't really use it because everything was in Japanese. Anyone come across a rental agency that rents cars with English-language GPS? You would think there would be a demand for it......but I can't find any reference to this on the rental co. websites and most have very little information about renting in Japan. Rang Hertz and they said they would ring back with info, but never did. Read more
Thanks for the feedback.
I have been on Shinkansen etc and want to go by car this time.
For Europe I usually take my trusty IPAQ with TomTom on it - but they don't seem to do maps for Japan. I suspect a lot of this stuff is Japanese-market only because there won't be many westerners driving in Japan and the maps etc would all have to be Romanised.
Driving in Tokyo was fine last time, plenty of English signage and seemed easier than London to me! Traffic nothing like as bad as I'd been led to believe and the car park at my hotel was never more than half full!
Looked at Lonely Planet but not much on driving. I was looking for something like a real touristy guide with information on viewpoints, scenic routes etc (bit like those long green books that Michelin produce). Anyway, there doesn't seem to be anything so I'll play it by ear when I get there.

That was my cunning plan - keep the bottom part and making a btter solution for the top. The bottom part 'works' fine (As much as an inert piece of plastic can)
