Hello All!

I was wondering if anyone could help me.

My S-reg peugeot 306 has recently developed a bit of a problem. For the last year or so it has needed oil top-ups in between services. Just before christmas I was driving along and the car seemed to accelerate of it's own volition - only slightly but enough to make me use the brakes to bring it back under control. This seemed to clear itself up so I thought nothing more of it.

A couple of days later I topped up the oil as you do. All was fine until driving alone a stretch of road the car began to accelerate quite sharply of it's own volition, billowing white smoke out of the back as it did so. Depressing the clutch only made matters worse as the engine accelerated past the rev-dial limit so in order to avoid an accident I braked and deliberately stalled the engine.

My garage unfortunately doesn't normally deal with these sort of problems but have said that one of the piston rings has gone. I've been given quotes in the £1400-1800 + vat region to either recondition or replace the engine with dire warning attached that the fuel system may also be knackered which would cost another £1000 and it may never run properly again.

Unfortunately - being in my last year of study I can't actually afford to replace the car.

Is there anything other than a worn piston ring that could cause this - could it be a problem with the turbo or the fuel system? Is there anything I should be getting the garage to check for before accepting that I basically need a new engine.

If it is a piston ring that has gone - would repairing the car (ignoring the financial aspects) be a futile exercise. How likely am I to have further problems with a replacement engine?

Bought my 1994 306TD back in 2003 with 120k on the clock, at a time when I knew very little about cars. After a few weeks of ownership and covering 2000 miles, checking the fluid levels weekly as a matter of course, I quickly realised how quickly the oil was going down and needed top ups of about a litre every 700 miles. The car was also smoking heavily on start up despite air and fuel filter changes. Thought little more of it as the car ran like a dream otherwise but asked around a few garages and most of them said worn turbo oil seals and possibly valve stem seals or piston rings. The problem got no worse over the next 30k but the icing on the cake came at 150k when the head gasket failed, whereby I decided to bite the bullet and stick a replacement engine in. Since then, the car has hardly ever needed an oil top up between 6k changes and the engine is now on 145k.

Might work out cheaper in your situation to replace the engine with one from an accident damaged 306 or Citroen Xsara- there are plenty of decent 1.9TD lumps in the scrappies. I picked mine up for £300 with 109k on the clock and got it fitted for £250 including new cambelt, filters, oil etc. Otherwise, you are probably looking at an engine rebuild if a piston ring has blown which would most likely work out more expensive than an exchange engine. If replacing the engine, might also be worth replacing the clutch at the same time- piece of cake when the engine is out of the car.

Manufacturers tend to publish maximum wading depths for their of 4x4 vehicles but not for normal cars.
I don't intend going off-roading in my Mondeo but it would be nice to know how deep is too deep when the roads are flooded

Any idea what the maximum wading depth of an 04 Diesel Mondeo Estate is Read more

Agreed; those recirculating oil air-cleaners were far superior to the later paper filters for that application. I chose my words carefully...

I'm having a bit of an issue with the Scudo during warmup.

It's a 1.9d ( 1868 ) non turbo

The van starts ok from cold, and generally runs fine, but when it's partly warm (gauge below 70) it has a 'misfire' at idle speed.

The heater plugs have been changed recently.

The cambelt has been changed recently.

The sender for the temp gauge went faulty (reading overheating when cold) so I replaced that. Next to that sender was another one (green top) and I noticed that when that is disconnected the misfire stops.

I replaced that sender too.

I think the green top sender provides temperature info for engine management, so I'm guessing something in the fuelling changes at around the problem temperature.

Anybody got any ideas what to check next?

What kind of OBD does this have and would it tell me anything?

Thanks

On reading about the Merc Sprinter it made me think about my van - sure its not searingly fast, but its quicker than you would think.

It weighs only 873kg and has nearly 80BHP - not sure what sort of power to weigh ratio this gives and what sort of cars that puts it up against, but it does more than 70 mph in 3rd gear and ive had it up to 100 mph and it was still pulling.

Its very low geared and as with the Sprinter, you start in 2nd gear usually.

Anyone with PTW info on cars got a car with similar power to weight figures? Id just be interested to know what sort of 0-60 it might have as I nearly beat a 2.0 Audi from some traffic lights up to 50mph and he didnt get that far away by the time I hit the legal limit.

My SIL has a 2003 1.4 Match. Is this the same engine as the FSI?
She is losing a lot of oil, I don't know specific quantities, but it is not what I would call a normal amount on a low milage three year old car.
When she first took in to the dealer they said they had changed the 'oil filler cap', as it was faulty. I'm sure if it was the oil filler cap or not **sorry Pip, if you're reading this**.
The oil loss continued and the dealership steam washed the engine at around the sump and told my SIL to comeback the following ek to check.
They said there was no oil leak, and that oil loss (dunno if it's burning or leaking) of about 1 litre for every 600 miles.
Are they spinning her a line? Surely this sort of oil loss cannot be right?

Could I have your opinions please.

The 1.4 FSI engine has now been dropped by VW due to bore wear problems, with the resulting high oil consumption.

I recently had my near three year old Skoda Fabia estate Mot'd for the first time.It passed but they mentioned that the two front tyres were near the limit and to have them changed within the next couple of months. I have learned that the two Skoda dealers who serviced my Vehicle "due to a relocation" one in Essex one in Edinburgh had not swapped the wheels around as per the good old days. My vehicle has only done 30000 miles do I have a claim against Skoda. They claim no one "swaps" tyres around these days! Read more

I subscribe to the change everything when the front were school of thought. If you want anything more than a standard service ie check belts, clean and check brakes, check air filter , change oil and filter and top up and check fluid levels then you need to ask for it.

If you are particularly botherd then rotate the tyres yourself, all you need is a good troley jack, a whel wrench and a tourq wrench.

Imo corect tyre presures and driving tequniuqe are more significant re tyre wear than rotation.
