corsa sxi whining noise - ka razy

Hi,my "04" corsa sxi has developed a strange whining noise from the engine dept. It is rather intermittent .Have checked usual things,as in drive belt,lubricated the alternator,etc..It doesnt get louder as engine revs increase. The only thing it seems to be affecting affecting is my ears! Anyone any ideas..its got 21K on the clock.
