I seem to have been taken by surprise by this new lighting development that I see a lot now on Rangerover Sports and other big 'pimpy' suvs - are these very bright ice/blue/white lights legal? I know I shouldn't look at them but they really are distracting and dazzling Read more

I don't understand all this techno - speak, but i access this site through Internet Explorer and I have never had any problems. I do get a pop-up blocker that appears at the top of the site. I also don't have any fancy software running on the computer either (you will have guessed that!).

Has anyone else experienced trouble accessing www.theaa.com today? The website seems to partially load and then it hangs or freezes in IE 6 and I have difficulty in then proceeding and have to shut my computer down and re-boot.

If you've got XP ............
Tools > Internet options > Privacy, and then tick the "Block pop-ups" box. Works for me, anyway.

What\'s for you won\'t pass you by
Took my Fiesta for it's re-test today (06/11/06) now the old MOT was valid until 27/12/06 surely the new MOT should have been valid till 26/12/07?
The one I was given is valid untill 05/11/07 , i.e 12 months from today. In the old days before the computerised MOTs you used to be able to take the test up to a month early, is this no longer the case?
I was just glad it passed after all my hard work, did'nt look at the certificate until I got home. Read more
Apparently the new computerised system does 13 month MOT automatically -
Only if your old one was computerised.
Just received the documentation from Auto Aid (as recommended by Martin Lewis, MoneySavingExpert tinyurl.com/3m67k ).
What a great deal at £32. However I should point out a couple of conditions that might catch a few people out.
Firstly they only accept cars that are 2.5 litre or less.
Secondly you must have a spare wheel - not a can of sealer. This is not mentioned on their web site, so please be aware of this.
Hoping I do not have to use them in the next 12 months.

What a beast.
Glad to hear you are covered and I was wrong in how I read their definition. It should have been laid out differently with each entry as a bullet point on separate lines or reworded to increase clarity. It is poor wording of legislation that gives lawyers plenty of work.

SWMBO 2001 Mazda 1.6l, 323F. Engine warning light is now permanently illuminated- car still runs fine and no apparent problems.
Is this an MOT failure or will it depend on the emissions readouts?

I read in today's Telegraph that about 10 days ago Guernsey introduced changes to their motoring taxes. Fuel has been raised 16p a litre - ouch, but road tax has been scrapped.
The basis of this is that you pay tax on the amount of fuel you use, and this is directly based upon how much you use your car and how economical it is. What a simple solution.
It was sumised that for the UK to adopt this would mean fuel would rise by 10p per litre as we do more miles. Would you be prepared to pay this extra to avoid having to pay for a Road Tax Licence?

This system means that:
You drive a large car - you pay more tax
You do many miles - you pay more tax
You get stuck in traffic- you pay more tax
The system collects tax via an existing system, is extremely difficult to evade, and avoids the cost of the RFL 'system', although we may need a 'this car is MOT'd and insured tag, but that's it.
But why should the government do that? Instead they can achieve these objectives by using a vastly complicated system of vehicle tracking and 'road pricing' which employs armies of government employees to administer.
Do I sound cynical?

Any recommendations? I'll do less than 1.5k miles a year.

Have a flick through the back of the landie mags - loads of specialist out there who will try to take you money off you.
Mine is through Adrian Flux but it's not exactly a standard vehicle.
The Mondeo has blotted its copybook!
Noticed on Saturday that I'm getting what feels like intermittent loss of power steering effort at slow speeds. It seems to be at its worst past about a turn of lock in either direction, but it was happening seemingly at random at all speeds. Sometimes the assistance just returns, other times it doesn't. The weight when this happens is identical to trying to steer the car without the engine running - i.e. I can move the wheel, but it's hard work.
Fluid level is just under MAX (where it has been since I bought the car). Fluid looks a little murky though.
No sign of leaks and no puddles or stains on the drive or on the inside of the undertray.
PAS belt looks in good nick and doesn't appear to be squealing or slipping.
No roughness or peculiar feeling through the steering.
At speed it's either not happening or it's not noticeable - the Mondeo's steering is nice and weighty once rolling anyway, so I suspect it's just not noticeable.
Any suggestions? Never had a car with PAS play up before, so no idea where to start.
2000 mk2 Mondeo 1.8TD with 123,000 miles on the clock.
Cheers

If you can replicate the problem, watch the rev counter.

No revs = heavy steering.

The fundamental problem does seem to be that the levelling systems are designed to cope with changes in the angle of the vehicle due to loading, not short term changes due to speed bumps / potholes. I had a beemer 650 following me across the New Forest the other evening and his HID lamps were more or less permanently dazzling me.:-/
