Evolution.........if the branches were lower any Tom, Dick or Harry from the animal kingdom would come along and chew them. Which is why they have Giraffes as a countermeasure.

Right, im in the mind of looking for one of these with a budget of around £2500 -£3k.
Can anybody tell me if they're a good buy as i'd like to swap it for my Ford Ka (yes i know it's a bit different!!)
Yes i am aware it'll be older then my Y-reg Ka, but how reliable are they at this price as i will consider an inspection prior to purchase anyway?
Or am i insane to even think about it?

Both my parents had one not so long ago, dads a 318ti which was quite rapid, mums a 316 which was dog slow- not much different from my pug 106 1.1 i had at the time. Both had to have work on the seat wiring because the airbag came on twice on my dads and twice aswell on mums. By the time it was at 60000 miles hers also had got through an aircon compressor pulley and the last time we had it serviced they noted that the diff was whining. and these were 2000/1 models, the last of the E36s so you would have thought they'd have sorted the niggles by then.
On the plus side, although not fast they both drove very solidly and felt like a quality item from behind the drivers wheel. But just make sure you can get comfy as the pedals are badly offset to the right, and the steering wheel doesn't adjust at all.
Hope this helps.

dieselnut

Have been having a few nightmares after reading some of the recent stories on here that some backroomers have been having with their CR diesels.
I got thinking if there was something that could be done to reduce the risk of an expensive failure of HP pump or injectors to my high mileage 163k C5 2.2Hdi.
My thoughts went back to the good old days of a few 2 stroke motorcycles i've had in the past, & how those engines survived much abuse with just oil mixed in with the petrol at about 50:1 mix.
So I thought I would mix in some cheap 20w 50 engine oil in with my diesel fuel at a ratio of about 100:1 as diesel is already a reasonable lubricant.
The oil will just burn in the same way as the diesel once it has done its lubrication work having passed through the low pressure pump, high pressure pump & then the injectors.
I've tried it with the last 3 fuel fills & the engine starts & runs the same as it always has.
Can anyone see any downfall in this idea.
At least I can sleep sounder at night LOL. Read more

Regarding Millers, it also states on the bottle that apart from cleaning the injectors, it also lubricates the pump, i've used it in every tankful for 40,000 miles and its been fine.

I have an A4 1.9TDi is shortly due for a timing belt. I am getting conflicting stories from 2 Audi dealers, 1 VW dealer and an independant.

The belt was last replaced at 56879miles and the car is currently on 111388miles. The Audi garages are suggesting leaving it until the recomened service interval which is showing 8400 to go on the onboard computer. The VW dealer says its due at 117000 miles and the independant says its due every 90000kilometers which is about 55800 miles, hence due very soon.

Anyone else been in this situation? The belt was only done 2 years ago so would I be taking a risk waiting until the service is due?

Thanks in advance Read more

I assume it is out of manufacturer's warranty now. If it does fail before the Audi dealer says it needs changing, I think you'll see them step sharply backwards and deny all knowledge. For peace of mind, assuming the independant is good, I'd get it changed. If it was my car with that mileage it would only see a main dealer if the indy couldn't do a particular job.

Question VAG Servicing
bimmer-driver

My 2003 SEAT Ibiza this evening started flashing INSP when I started to drive it home this evening- even though I changed the oil and filter, air filter and plugs when I got it 4 months/400miles ago/ When you delve inot the handbook it says it needs a maintenance service whatever one of those is as opposed to just an oil change when it would have just flashed OIL- my question is should I just ignore it as it had a minor service 4 months ago or would it need more things doing to it as it specified by SEAT?
Also, is the service indicator on these only based on mileage ie comes on after 10,000 miles or does it actually monitor things through usage?

Brakes, steering, suspension etc all need inspecting during a service, changing oil and filter is'nt servicing.

The indicator is just a mileage / annual reminder, it monitors nothing

Hello folks,

Long time no post. I am currently the proud owner of a Fabia Vrs, but my hobbies (Rowing, Cmountain biking etc) mean its not really big enough.

Ive found a friend selling a 04 plate, Golf 2.0 FSI GT. Its in great cosmetic condition, but has done 88k, Is this a major issue? What sort of things should i have expected to go wrong in this time/mileage, and what might need replacing soon? He wants £8800 for it.

Thanks in advance for your advice Read more

Avant

Coming back to the original question, Nick, you should check how miuch more roomy the Golf is compared with the Fabia. I'd have thought not much, as the Fabia is quite a big supermini.

For £8800 you should be able to get a very decent upmarket Octavia - hatch or estate.

I was just reading a review on the BBC Business site that says the future looks even more rosey for Toyota as they announce quarterly profits of £2.6Billion.
Just to put this in perspective, the same site carried a similar story for Europes biggest car maker who made £189Million for the same period.

And Toyota continue to expand in the US (high cost economy) while the other car makers invest in eastern europe countries.
I am not Toyota's biggest fan but you have to hand it to them - focusing on the customer first - which they do very well certainly pays off.

Just in support of the dealer having a bearing on the branding, below is an extract from the Lexus Customer Charter (Lexus.co.uk).
Basically it says if you have any problem with Lexus cars or service you contact the dealer (Lexus Centre in Lexus speak) and I think the rest is self explanatory.

"The complaint, preferably in writing, should be addressed to The Customer Relations Executive, at the Lexus Centre.

The Customer Relations Executive acts as a point of reference for customers who require assistance or advice. They have access to every department within Lexus (GB) Ltd and are therefore best placed to provide a quick response to problems or concerns as they arise. "

It goes on to describe how problems can be escalated but I think the above sums it up nicely - Lexus (and other makes) clearly see the dealer as having a huge bearing on the brand.
