hiya! having a problem with my golf 1.6 year 89, seems to be when it warms up, it is extremely high tick over, tapped around on the carb, 2 miles later it started cutting out...8 miles later it got high again! Any ideas on this, would be a massive help to me! Cheers Read more
Correct me if I'm wrong, but do 406 driveshafts have some sort of balancing weight on?
The reason I ask,is because I've been plagued with a slight vibration on mine, for 12 months, and despite doing the obvious of having tracking checked, wheels balanced etc,I haven't a clue as to what's causing it.It sort of comes on at about 60mph plus, and is there for about 3 seconds, goes away for the same amount of time, comes back...............
Got talking to a lad at my local ham radio club the other night, who,as well as being a tyre fitter, told about this supposed weight,as he also has a 406,albeit an older variant.
Is he telling the truth,or is he having a giraffe, and if he is telling the truth, and it does exist, how, apart from being ripped off from the dealer, can I get it so it's spot on?

If the 406 layout is similar to the Xantia's, then assuming the cv joints are ok, I would be looking for wear in the offside shaft intermediate bearing.
I got the 17" cross spoke alloy wheels on my 2001Y BMW 530i Touring refurbished 15 1/2 months ago. This was considerably more expensive than I thought it would be because they are "two part" wheels and they have recessed bolts around the rim which had to be removed then reassembled. Also adding to the cost was my remote location which added carriage. They apparently were stripped, the kerb makings ground out, wet laquered and baked, etc, etc and they did look tremendous when they came back.
I noticed on the two front wheels that the corrosion is returning (there are some greyish flaking sorts of marks). What could have caused this? The car only has done 4000 odd miles in the last 15 months, it gets mini valeted monthly. It is kept in a gravelled parking area when not in use and none of the wheels have been kerbed but i guess that it is possible the laquer could have been pierced by a stone chips.
The guy that oversaw the work said that there were no guarantees and that the refurbishment would probably not last forever, but I am a bit disappointed that it only lasted 15 months. Is there a flaw in the wheels or in the process? What would be a reasonable position to take on this?
Many thanks Read more
Could one consider wheel refurbishment as a regular 2year job , considering salt used on roads during winter and acids for cleaning them ? This assumes you like your car to look just right.
Yesterday (Saturday morning), I turned right on a roundabout following a car which was following a learner in an obviously signed driving school car. The road our three vehicles entered is urban, vehicles parked on both sides and has full width ramps as well as those three humps with gaps things.
The guy ahead of me, he looked in his forties, so I'm assuming he had a bit of experience, was right up the backside of the learner, a learner driver - I remeber being told to beware of learners because - they're learning - I couldn't believe it!
I mean - what is the point? What is the point?
The learner was driving fime anyway.
But it just makes me despair, where is the common courtesy, the decency, the manners?
I'm sure it must be a damn good chuckle for somebody - but I don't want people doing that to my kids when they're learning to drive.
I just don't get it - why - why - why?

Wow again - how many extra lessons do you think that learner needed to regain confidence?
My instructor said to drive as if you have a full bucket of milk in the car - have to be even smoother than for H.M. - can you imagine the lingering smell!!
As for treatment of learners generally, I am against the "new driver plates" people use too - if the type of driver who mistreats a learner sees you are a new driver (without the calming influence of an instructor), then he/she will be even worse. He/she might have ignored a stall at a junction if they thought it was an experienced driver, but not if they know you have just passed your test.
Hi,
does anyone know which wheels the brake pad wear sensors are located on a T4 Caravelle/Transporter.
The handbook states there is one at the front and one at the rear.
Thanks,

Hi All,
I am looking to buy a second hand car for around £12-13k. I currently own a old 328i coupe so would like something with a bit (lot!) of go.
Miles per gallon is not an issue as I only do around 8k per annum, but I do move my dog around a fair bit, so back seats are a necessity.
My current thinking is a 3-4yr old Mazda RX8. My only concern is that the engine floods if turned off before it heats through. If I understand things correctly this can only be 'un-flooded' by a Mazda dealer and so would mean a lot of hassle, if this was a common problem.
I work around 8 miles from where I live, so thought this would be an issue. Anyone have any comments?
I am open to other cars, but have my heart set on the Mazda.
Thanks in anticipation of anyone's comments

I'd like to thank everyone for their contribution to this thread. I can't say that I have made up my mind yet, but all your information will help.
My heart says yes... my mind, well not sure. Most importantly I need to broach this with my better half (lol).
One thing I have learnt is that this is a very useful site and I'll try and contribute where I can.
Hi all,
I have a 2002 Peugeot 106 that is making a noise when moving. The noise cuts in at about 40mph. After speaking to my usual mechanic we decided it was one of two things the OSF wheel bearing or driveshaft. Both of these items have now been replaced and the noise is still there.
I am at a bit of a loss as to what else it could be. We are both sure that it is the OSF but neither of the items replaced has cured the fault. Other things that sprins to mind are gearbox, clutch, alternator or we have got the wrong wheel.
Tyres are almost new, clutch and gearbox operate with no problem nice and smoothly.
Any thoughts? Read more
Hi all,
Just to keep you all in the picture and so that anybody else searching can find the answer I have now solved the problem.
Took the OSF wheel off and swapped it with the spare. Noise now gone. No obvious signs of damge to either wheel or tyre and its still balanced correctly.
Thanks for all your comments. much appreciated.

OK..........
I primed alarm with key fob, then took off the battery so I could work on replacing head gasket.
Two days later put on battery alarm kept on going off. Tried using fob to turn it off....nothing. tried re-synching fob with alarm...........nothing.
Tried yesterday morning....now alarm dont go off just flashing led's in the door and no led in the dash.
Put key in ignition and just get the bleeping from the imobilser.
Also noticed that central locking is not working even when I use the key in the drivers door.
I checked all of the fuses, under bonnet/under drivers dash. All were ok. I checked earth from batery to chasis, took off and cleaned put back still no go.
Does anyone have any ideas??? Read more
Plimmy,
With the battery connect on the vehicle so it has power, but make sure the car is unlocked ... take the key fob and open it up and remove the battery ... with the battery out then press both buttons 4 times together .. (it re-sets a counter in the fob) then put the battery back in the fob and press the lock button 4 times and fingers crossed it should have sorted itself out ...
just seems strange the CDL has stopped working on the drivers door at the same time .. check the connector between the door and the main body of the vehicle .. they sometimes work loose ..
Hiya, My corsa 51 has had the airlbag light on for a while, any ideas what this could mean and what would cost to sort out? Read more
Agreed. once that little light is on the ONLY way to turn it off is with diagnostic equipment.

Simplicate and add lightness!!
Our C5 recently had an update to the engine and gearbox software, not at my request I should add, as it was done as part of an attempt to cure an engine management fault. However, I now suspect there is something amiss with the gearbox, as I appear to be getting slippage in second gear.
At around two thousand revs, or just above, the rev counter either stays static or falls back slightly, before picking up again. I assume this is not normal practice for an auto box? It doesn't happen in any other gear. I am beginning to wonder if it is anything to do with the software update, as I can't recall it happening before, and I began to notice it after the update was carried out. Read more
If the engine speed is varying but the road speed is not changing then something is slipping. Obviously the torque convertor behaviour needs to be taken into account, but yours doesn't sound like its the TC. Take it to an auto-trans specialist for a test drive, normally they will not charge for a 10-15 minute test run. Most main dealers know very little about auto trans.

I have just had another thought (Senior golden moment). As well as what I have already said in my last posting, check the short brake vacuum rubber hose where it connects to the inlet manifold, it can go soft, collapse and split therefore letting air leak into the inlet manifold. It does not help braking performance either!
