Millions of motorists who drive to work are facing having to pay for the right to use their office or factory car park.
Nottingham city council is due to become the first authority in the country to introduce a workplace parking levy in a move that is being watched closely by local authorities elsewhere in the country.
Its initial draft for the scheme suggested that each space would be subject to an annual £184 fee at February 2005 prices.
The idea of treating an employer-provided parking space as a taxable benefit has been considered by the Treasury.

I'm sure he and his friends would prove a major boost to some of the main dealerships' servicing centres in the UK...:-)
The Cubans, of course, are equally famous for keeping their cars going whatever the age of the vehicles.

A Saxo, driven by a youngster, going at walking pace around a roundabout. She did not notice the 4x4 in front slow for schoolkids - she ran into the back -100% the Saxo driver's fault - the front disintegrated -- it was a 51 Reg so not that old - What would a real bump have done? Read more
Absolutely agree with you nick - my post was a little simplistic for what is a complex subject based on design, age of car etc.
Any ideas on the best (reputable) place I cd get a 6-mth lease vehicle for private use? DSG, Lings or any other positive experiences gratefully received.
Many thanks

6 months is a very short time for a lease - you'd be better off looking at a long term daily hire.
This is all motherhood and common sense really but some of you may want to pass it onto friends and family that are not so hot on motoring - as we are.

My wife tells me that I need to relax more when driving.
Any top tips on keeping calm in the face of danger introduced by others ?
I have tried peril sensitive glasses, but that caused all manner of other

Absolutely, especially after 2 in the afternoon (and avoiding Steve Wright - hurrah!) and after 7 in the evening.

I have an odd problem with an Audi petrol A 6 Avant.
When reversing recentlly the brake pedal went almost completely to the floor but recovered to normal at once. It did it again moments later so we recovered it by RAC to home. I have looked for anything amiss and can find nothing obvious. I then took it for a test run and everything appeared normal however after a few miles the brakes began to bind on. I think it was all brakes not just one set. I have removed the master cylinder and again can find nothing obviously wrong. Before spending several hundred pounds on replacing the master cylinder and or servo and possibly the ABS pump I wonder if anyone has heard of similar symptoms. Thre car hasn?t been used heavily nor it has stood idle for a long period although the fluid looks like it could do with replacing. It has been regularly serviced on mileage the last being 9000 miles ago although this was two years ago. Roger

FYO I have now replaced the Master Cylinder and we seem to be OK. Despite the service book being fully stamped fro services the change of fluid section has been ignored! Certainly could be that it has never been changed! It has now!

The big issue is the front subframe which needs to be dropped, and then realigned accurately when refitted. Otherwise it's pretty standard.
Not a cheap job if you get it done professionally. I was quoted £500 by a Ford dealer recently. Mind you, my brother in law got hit for over a grand for a clutch and flywheel on his Passat TDI 130 a week later, so it puts things in context.

Three weeks ago I reported some truly wild driving on the A34 to the Hampshire Constabulary, not expecting anything in return. Today I received a personal letter concerning the "alleged bad driving", the key points being:
* The information has been recorded because I was able to supply the full registration number.
* "Consideration is also being given for intelligence dissemination, depending on the level of intelligence currently logged against this vehicle or driver. Furthermore, if subsequent reports involving the vehicle are received, then consideration will be given to the active targeting of this vehicle by the Roads Policing Unit."
* However, they do of course require an independent witness, and I could provide none.
Nevertheless, I am pleased to have received a response and it does seem that proper reports may be taken seriously. Read more
I was going to post this in the recent thread about driver retests and behaviours, however, here is probably better. I car cameras are becoming much more common, I am considering a front and rear facing system myself. Eventually they will become standard fit on all cars. Virtually every peice of bad driving will be caught on someones camera. Whether the Police will welcome the possible deluge of video that they may have sent to them I don't know. However, this technology does have the potential to make people think before they carry out some stupid maneouvre or drive while texting etc.
IMO when you look at the contenders that is a fair result. Read more
Are the Diesel engines in this current award winning Ford still
on cambelts? :)
Good point, the S-Max and Galaxy use the Ford / PSA belt cam diesels as in the Focus, C-Max, V50, 407, C5 etc rather than the Ford / Jag chain cam units in the current Mondeo and X-Type.

Just the same situation facing Mrs H, a midwife. Darlington Memorial Hospital are quite happy to take money off their nursing staff for "access" which means nothing when the general public share the same car park. Being sensible and having an unremarkable car, Mrs H parks on the street.
