Servo/M Cylinder 1995 Audi A6 - wogerthewacer

I have an odd problem with an Audi petrol A 6 Avant.
When reversing recentlly the brake pedal went almost completely to the floor but recovered to normal at once. It did it again moments later so we recovered it by RAC to home. I have looked for anything amiss and can find nothing obvious. I then took it for a test run and everything appeared normal however after a few miles the brakes began to bind on. I think it was all brakes not just one set. I have removed the master cylinder and again can find nothing obviously wrong. Before spending several hundred pounds on replacing the master cylinder and or servo and possibly the ABS pump I wonder if anyone has heard of similar symptoms. Thre car hasn?t been used heavily nor it has stood idle for a long period although the fluid looks like it could do with replacing. It has been regularly serviced on mileage the last being 9000 miles ago although this was two years ago. Roger

Regularly serviced, but not for 2 years, fluid filthy - never changed? Is wogerthewacer a windup? ;o)

Sounds like the fluid is boiling due to a seized calliper, rears are favourite on VAG cars. Could also be a brake flexi hose collapsed internally and holding a brake on. Whilst the M/C is off you could have is tested by a brakes hydraulic specialist.

When you test drove the car and the brakes failed was one of the brakes hotter than the rest?

I'd check the pistons are'nt seized first.

That fluid need changing before the car is driven again, once its boiled its no longer any good.

All the best wogertheracer ;o)

Hi thanks fro the tips. The car belonged to my late father who had had it serviced regularly and was due in earlier this year when he passed away. The car has not stood since then but has not been used every day. There is no pulling on the brakes and they all appear to be coming on normally. When the car has been stood and the brakes colled they are quite free. A siezed caliper would pull and I don't see the pedel going to floor twice and then recovering toi be fine. HJ' reply was that it could be a reversed rubber in the master cylinder which I see as logical. Cheers anyway

FYO I have now replaced the Master Cylinder and we seem to be OK. Despite the service book being fully stamped fro services the change of fluid section has been ignored! Certainly could be that it has never been changed! It has now!
