Are they really any use? I've never owned or been in a car with them, but I can't see what two little trickles of water are going to do against anything thick enough to warrant their use. Read more

I've seen people talk about leasing rather than purchase.
So what are the advantages and disadvantages of leasing a car over purchasing, if any for someone say doing 15k/yr privately.

If you're self-employed,
Purchasing is capital so you pay tax on it.
Leasing is day-to-day running, so you don't.
I've been offered one of these for free. How difficult would it be to fit a new starter motor/ The owner has been quoted £400! Read more
Pull the starter out and have a look(not difficult IIRC).The state of the pinion will give you a clue, but check the RG while turning the engine by hand, use a torch and mirror if neccessary.
On one of the channels the other night, crazed (but clever) virago Julie Burchill presented a long programme in defence of chavs. She spent a lot of time sideswiping chav-haters, something she does quite effectively, and to my absolute amazement had a meeting of minds with traditional Tory writer (and one-time Macmillan speechwriter) Ferdinand Mount.
Her theory, with which Ferdy Mount agreed, was that the use of the term chav, and the scorn poured on chavs for their vulgarity etc., represent a cruel and morally reprehensible attack on the white British working class, already beleaguered by the destruction of the country's manufacturing industries.
Thought-provoking indeed, and I couldn't help thinking of the invective poured on these honest young would-be workers on this forum sometimes. Almost makes me proud to drive a car HJ says is archetypally chav. Read more

I can't stand the use of the word "underclass" either. Pops up on this forum from time to time, today in fact.
I did try really hard to find a motoring link on this thread... PG
I read a very interesting article today in 'Professsional Engineering' (dated 8/11/06) about Bentley and how they are celebarting 60 years at Crewe with a 10 fold increase in production since 2003 and in a profitable manner as well. They are managing to produce this 10 fold increase with just twice the number of people and the introduction of the Bentley Production System, which is based on ............ you guessed it - the Toyota Production System (TPS).
Basically the Bentley Training and Kaizen Manager is ex Toyota and has used the widely acknowledged TPS skills to cascade them within the Bentley workforce and manufacturing processes.
That is not to take anything away from Bentley - with VW's money, excellent products and the Toyota way they are clearly very successful and should be congratulated for this - especially as they continue to build in Crewe. Read more
>>Oh and as the 120 Temps leave start another rumour that there another 380 to go a little later, nothing like a little fear to improve efficiency is there?<<
That is the trouble with German companies I suppose.
on a motorway journey in traffic i noticed my temperature rising to over 100 degrees and the fans would not work so i put the heater on full blast until i could get off.
The car has air con but at the minute isnt working as it needs gassing after the condenser is replaced. (dont know if this affects it or not)?
I was wondering what tests i could do to test. I know theres a briton sensor involved in the aircon and coolant fan but i dont know much about it. I have looked on peugeotlogic at the cooling system but could do with a few pointers.
the car is a 306 hdi (2001) and the access is quite arkward so any advise id be greatful
cheers Read more
The fans should work for engine cooling, irrespective of the state of the A/C. They should always come on together - at slow speed (wired in series) at about 85°C, and high speed (wired in parallel) at something over 95°C. The Bitron simply switches the relays (3 of them) that control what speeds the fans are running at, and controls the additional functionality required with A/C (eg fans on all the time, fans on high if A/C pressure goes too high). The most likely cause of the problem is either a failed (seized and/or burnt out) fan(s), or dodgy wiring at the relays (which are mounted near the fans somewhere -may even be between them at the top. The Bitron uses a temp sensor in the thermostat housing, normally coloured brown, and having 2 wires to it (rather than the other sensors which only have 1 wire). If you pull this sensor connector off, both fans should start on high speed (the Bitron detects no connection as a fault condition). If only one starts, then the other is goosed one way or another. If neither starts, then it's time to get the tools out.....
I believe there is some good info at www.peugeotlogic.com

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
Hoping for some car buying advice.
Currently own a 3 Series BMW Compact which I like mainly for the fact it is incredibly reliable, feels solid and looks decent (I think). But with the arrival of our first child this year I am feeling the pressure from the other half to get something bigger. In fact, I refuse to accept the necessity for a mini-bus now we have a child (getting him in and out of the hatchback in his car chair is no problem) but I do concede that we need a bigger boot (particularly if we are going to holiday in this country).
So we're looking for a 4 door car (not people carrier). I have enjoyed owning the beemer but with a budget of around £10k I suspect that upgrade won't be possible. And as I haven't quite given up all interest in cars because I am now a father, it would be nice to have something which has a bit of poke and even possibly a bit of kerb appeal. Too much to ask for £10k? Might be able to push budget a little higher if need be.

How much are new shape Leon Turbos now? (I assume the old shape would be too small.)
Yup, Ken Livingstone is set to raise the Congestion Charge in 2009 to £25 for Band G cars.
This is after extending the in charging area in Feb 2007. Surely this is not a charge but a tax.
I will never drive in central London during the week any more as the CC and parking charges are too high. I wonder how many other people who live outside London feel the same. Shops, theatres and dining establishments will find a drop in custom.
I wonder when the CC will be charged at weekends?

good point, well presented........
it just highlights that there's choice and one way isn't totally right or wrong........ we're human beings who should be thinking for ourselves and are lucky enough to live in a democracy that allows us to (aren't we?)
i would wish to avoid london transport at all costs........although occasionally have to........but fully understand why others do so
Some years ago, as I was driving out of a motorway service area, I spotted what I thought was a Ferrari (I had not seen one before). Out of curiosity, I pulled up alongside said car and the following conversation ensued with the owner:
Me: Is that a Ferrari?
Owner: Yes.
Me: Nice car!
Owner: Thank-you.
Me: I bet you can pull the birds in that one:o)
Owner: I don't need a Ferrari to do *that*!!
That encounter brings a smile to my face every time I think about it. Have other Backroomers had good encounters which they would like to share? Read more
*Many* years ago I was driving very cautiously down a country road which was covered by hard-packed snow.
As I was going round a left-hand bend my car decided to carry straight on and collided (fortunately at slow speed) with the side-car of an AA motorcycle patrol, the driver having stopped for nature relief.
Having relieved myself and made sure that no real harm had come to either vehicle, I was able to proceed on my journey....duly saluted by the AA man (what a very nice man:o).

No problem. I'm not exactly fast myself.
