I need toget new tyres for the scenic, can anyone recommend any?
The tyre sizes are 185/65 + 195/60 the car is used for short commuting journeys in the week and maybe 200-300 mile motorway trips at the weekends from april till oct but proberly only does about 10,000 miles a year if that. Read more

Are these 14" or 15" wheels?

I've used Hankook K406s on my last two cars - Peugeot 406 HDi 195/65/15 H and Peugeot 306 TD 185/60/14 H. They're an excellent mid-price tyre with good handling, ride, noise and wear - perhaps not outstanding in any category but leagues ahead of budget tyres and still very well priced.

Could anyone make a guess as to how many laws it's possible to break merely by being the owner of a car? I'd guess it's in the hundreds..possibly more than any other aspect of our day-to-day existence. Depressing thought...

>>What I meant was laws, regulations, etc. specific to car ownership - construction and use regs., speeding,SORN irregularities, dangerous driving, etc. etc.

Hundreds I expect, as a zealous policeman will confirm. Just hope it's not you.

I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to say.

We have a 53 plate Focus Zetec, and I was wondering if anyone else has seen the following strange electrical annomaly, ie when the engine is running with the lights on, if you blip the throttle, as the engine settles down to idle, all of the light flicker briefly and then settle back to steady again. I think this has always been the case, but I was wondering if this is a normal annomaly of this model ?

I have just replaced the drivers side cv joint on my Audi A4, everything seems to be o.k. But there is about 0.25" of end float in the driveshaft at the cv joint end, there doesn't seem to be any on the passenger side. I definately put the spacer and the washer in, because i double checked this. Does anyone know if this is the correct amount of end float?

thanks

Its not clear from the first post exactly what the situation is. But NC is essentially correct. The shaft should not move (more than a very small amount) in the outer, but should move in the inner. If you can undo the bottom balljoint you could pull the hub clear and feel the movement in inner and outer joints. As to the exact amount required, I don't know - that would probably be in the factory manual.

Can any of you guys in the know please tell me what would be a fair price to ask (and realistically expect to get) for my VW Passat in a private sale and where is the best place to advertise it (I have used Autotrader previously).

It's a pre-facelift TDI PD 115 Sport estate on an "X" plate and was 6 years old this month, I've owned the car from new and it has done 90,000 miles. It as all the toys as standard (full electric pack, auto dimming mirror, climate control, 6 disk DC, etc., etc.)

I would estimate that 90% of the mileage has been long motorway journeys and with only me in the car. The seats and whole interior are basically "as new", (no dogs or smokers and very seldomly children!). The outside is good (no dents) apart from 90K miles worth of stonechips and the alloys are not kerbed. It's got 12 months tax & MOT and 6 month old Michelin Pilot Primacys all round. Colour is metallic black.

Obviously I am gong to be biassed, but it does look good when washed and polished.

Apologies in advance for this sounding like an actual classified, but I don't want to ask too much and I don't want to give it away!

But that sum goes down for each extra year you keep
the car.

Yup, keep it for another 4 years and that will be nearer 30 quid a week.

Looks like same tyre as this thread:

My colleague had Pirellis fitted for £111 each.

The fan in my Scenic is working, I can clearly hear it turning, but very little air is coming out of the vents. I read an earlier post that suggested the pollen filter might be the problem, but I can't seem to locate it. I have had a look in the passenger footwell, which is apparently the location on later scenic models, but can't see where it may be. Does anyone know where it is located?

Many thanks,

Thanks so much for your advice. We had the same problem with our car and were able to fix it with your help. Just a couple of further points for anyone else doing this ..
The pollen filter was larger than we expected - about 25x25x2 cms. It slots vertically behind the glove box.
We ran the fan on full for a few minutes and this seemed to dislodge quite a few bits of leaves and other rubbish.
We hoovered the pollen filter before replacing it. Not very high tech but it worked!

A sad day in Castello Barchetta.
After 2 years of fault-free service, bar the replacement of the (original) battery, the Barchetta has been sold. There was just now way I could safely get Mrs B and BabyBarchetta in safely, as the cot kept flying off the boot rack at 60 mph, no matter how much gaffer tape I used :-)
So that´s that. A fun little car that should continue giving its new owners good service, and in a soppy emotional way I´m pleased it´s gone to a good home ? a very nice young couple took it away, absolutely delighted. I was pretty pleased too ? depreciation of ?100 in 2 years isn´t too bad.
However I shall remain Barchettaman if that´s OK. I don´t plan any RenaultFamily / TVM style transformations. Plus being AstraMan is, well, just a bit too depressing.
Regards all,
Barchettaman

Kind words, both, thank you.
Reading it back it should have been more efficiently written, but I'm glad the sentiment came over intact.

I seem to rememeber in the dim and distant past a discussion about air-con bacteria and sprays to get rid of the bugs?, did anyone give this a go or can anyone tell me the best product to try, er indoors' motor has started to hum a bit, suspect its the air-con as she swears blind she hasnt spilt anything.

Find an empty piece of straight road with nothing to hit, and get the car rolling gently in reverse gear; same noise on clutch takeup?
With clutch engaged, now gently build up a little speed; same noise as you do so?
Also with clutch engaged - and no steering applied! - press the trottle smartly; same noise?

Will help identify if powertrain / torque / load / load direction related.
