I noticed the other day one of my 54 reg clio alloy centre caps is missing. I took one of today so I could tell Renault the part number to order me another one. Now it won't go back on, it just falls off!
Could there have been some kind of glue on them in the first place? They are only plastic caps with 4 prongs on the back and I took it off carefully to begin with.
Can anyone help before I take my car into Renault on Saturday. I know its only a silly thing but I paid a lot for the alloys and want them to look their best! Read more
Once upon a time, I had my car and my wife had her car. I loved my car and looked after it as well as I could, parking in remote spots at Tescos, going slowly over the speed bumps (or driving an extra mile to avoid them) and making sure it was serviced on time and by proper Subaru people. I knew it was "just a car" and didn't want to get too sad about it but wanted to make sure it would live a long life and function as it had done from new.
My wife on the other hand couldn't care less...to her, a car was purely a thing to stop her getting wet or catching the bus...she had a nice new Scenic but to her it was "the blue car thing". If it got pranged in the car park or scraped against a gate post then it was no different to stubbing your toe...a quick expletive and move on.
Inside, you couldn't see the carpets for spare shoes, bits of old maps, sweet wrappers and assorted kid's paraphernalia. One of the seats had a half-digested boiled sweet welded to it. It even had a snail in it for a couple of months - rescued from the local tip. It eluded capture but left trails all over the roof lining and windows.
But, I told myself, this was fine. People are different. Some care about these things, some don't.
But one day, not so long ago the contract expired on the Blue Car Thing. It had seemed a good idea at the time, Contract Hire - get a new car, easy monthly payments. But time flies and suddenly the men were round with their handheld computers entering the details and condition of the car and calculating the excess payment we would have to make before they took it away to be resprayed and industrially cleaned prior to a sad end at some auction house.
Suddenly My Car became Our Car. And today was the day where she came back from the shops with that sort of look on her face...the look where you can tell that she's thinking "if I don't tell him he'll find out because he's sad enough to spot these things so I better tell him...without trying to laugh".
And in the scheme of things I suppose it wasn't too serious. No one was hurt. I'm just surprised that when doing 10 mph and hitting a kerb to avoid "a bunch of motorbikes" so much damage can be done to an alloy wheel and a 1000 mile old tyre. Plus the puzzling fact that it's a rear wheel and she wasn't in reverse or, and I quote, "I don't think I was in reverse".
Never mind, a fun few days and pennies ordering a specific tyre which took 3 weeks to get last time, getting a new wheel and discovering what interesting shapes the rear axle, rods, arms, whatever, have been turned into on an Impreza should do me the world of good.
So please, when you're talking about your Autoglyms and your Clay Bars and a whole Sunday in the sunshine spent looking after your pride and joy, remember, there will be one less of us out there this weekend.

I'm seriously thinking of buying myself a new VW Transporter van (via the company of course). They "look the part" and have the added advantages of being fully VAT recoverable whilst still having six seats, five doors and a LOADS of space. Plus the personal tax benefit is still much cheaper than a company car, (even though Gordon is hiking this from £500 to £3,000 per year).
It also has the added benefit of being able to take all the kids stuff (pushbikes, etc,) without having to remove wheels (from the pushbikes!!!) or use roof racks or boot racks. Oh and I nearly forgot, if I remove the rear seats I can get BOTH my motorbikes to a trackday without having to hire a van!
The top of the range has a 174 HP 2.5, 5 cylinder TDI motor with 400 lb ft of torque and if driven sensibily will do more than 40 MPG. Although I'll probably go for the same engine with 130 HP but with the Tiptronic gearbox (Tiptronic not available on the 174 HP version). Also has air-con, full electric windows/mirrors, leather seats, etc,etc
Any thoughts from people thinking along the same lines or from anyone wha has actually gone down this route?
I've still not convinced the boss (read wife) that this is a good idea, but I'm working on it.
Replies on a postcard please.

"The Vito keeps breaking doesn't it?"
Please tell me more!
I have just bought a car via a 'trade' seller on Auto trader.
Before buying I checked the VIN on the vehicle against the Log Book and MOT certificate. There was a one digit discrepancy on the MOT certificate - which I asked to be changed. This was done (witihn 24 hours). I then bought the car.
I then started to get twitchy - as i noticed the MOT Garage was over 50 miles away from the 'trader'.
I phoned VSO - the MOT test number exists in their database, but not for the vehicle I've bought, and on the Certificate. Indeed they say they have no record of the vehicle on the MOT Certificate being MOT'd for 18months (at least).
I phoned the MOT garage concerend, they have no record in their diary of doing the original MOT in August, nor of doing a change earlier this week. The issuer's name on the MOT is the name of someone at the garage (I don't know if it's his siganture though)
The VOSA do not understand how 1 test number can refer to 2 vehicles and recommended I inform the police, which I have - though I've not seen them yet.
the certificate I've got looks genuine, got the barcode, and the sticky label, doesn't look at all like a scan/copy.
What might be going on?
Stolen MOT forms?
I'm worried, to say the least.
And feel a fool to boot.

Bought the vehicle for £2,995.
A good price, had all been OK. Worst case scenario for repairs as it stands £600.

An interesting bit of PR insight in to the haulage company that bears Eddie Stobart's name: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5315366.stm
The biggest surprise was reading that at one point the fan club made a profit whereas the trucks didn't, and even today, with 850 vehicles the profit is only £6000 per truck per year. Read more
I'm a chartered accountant by training, and I can tell you that there are far too many accountants in practice servicing businesses who concentrate on saving their clients tax (in itself this is of course a good thing) to the exclusion of giving them advice on how to develop their businesses towards greater profitability and security.
This demands more lateral thinking on the part of both client and adviser, and is therefore in short supply.
I've just bought a MK3 mondeo and whilst I was looking through the manual, I came across the one touch window function. Sounding like it could be useful in the summer, I decided to try it out. I pressed the door open button and sure enough, all four windows slid open. Cool I thought. I then pressed the door close button and to my surprise, only the front windows closed. Is this correct or do I have a problem?
Many thanks in advance of any help you can give. Read more
The Mondeo and Focus for that matter have a sensor on the windows that makes the windows reverse and open if they encounter any resistance upon closing. (safety incase head, hand etc.. get stuck when closing.
I suggest you clean the window seals whilst the windows are down and this should solve your issue.

Hi
can somebody please help....
I have had a problem with my speedo...occasionally it stops working, after a few seconds/minutes it returns to normal. I have taken to a local garage who immediately said it was the circuit board in dash then replaced it. This worked fine for about 5 minutes then back to not working...
As my local garage clearly has no idea can anyone else help?? All my other electrics seem fine...radio is fine rev meter also fine, as are lights and all displays...
Please help.... Read more
Speed sensor ion the gearbox is apparantly a common problem. Should be relatively cheap to fix.

I have a R plate Rover 400, done 120K, new engine at 80k, when I start up in the morning, no matter how cold, the starter motor turns over at full pace and the engine fires up.
If however I stall when the engine is warm, the starter motor refuses to turn at all... if I wait for the engine to cool a little, the starter motor will turn begrudginly - like I've got a flat battery (I haven't) the SM will only turn at full speed when the engine is cold...
New alternator, rectifier checked, head sent away to exclude cracks, my mechanic has now run out of ideas... Any help out there?

Should add that I meant jump lead - quick and easy to try without dismantling anything.
First of all thank you to Cliff Pope for his advice on removing roof-lining on a previous thread. It was a lot easier than I had thought.
My problem is that the 8 amp fuse on my 1992 Volvo 240 Brakelight keeps fusing.
This happens even when the car is switched off and the keys are not in the ignition: I put a new 8 amp fuse in, press the brake pedal, and watch the fuse glowing away for a second or two then it blows out!
I think I have now eliminated the severed hinge cable as the problem; this is because I have now capped those wires off with a connection block; they are definitely not earthing now!
Any suggestions for things to try? I've had a poke round and can't see anything obviously wrong.

Glad you found my advice useful L-L.
The wiring should be pretty easy to trace. The suspect area is around the floor at the tailgate slam panel, especially if there is or has been a tow connector bodge up. I think, from memory, the wire comes along one side of the car, to one or other of the light clusters, and then continues along the back to the other cluster. The area is a fertile position for collecting muck and for rusting badly, or for the wires getting tangled up with tools etc in the floor recess.
There will also be another branch to the bulb-failure sensor, I'm not sure where.
Also worth cheching the condition of the fuse holder. They are notorious for corrosion, because of positioning directly under a weak point for water drips. Once a fuse has got hot, it weakens the plastic so it grips less well, so it tends to start a cycle of corrosion and increased resistance. It won't be the cause of the problem, but a hot fuse will tend to start other problems.
(BTW, worth checking and cleaning all the fuses periodically, especially those for the fuel pumps)
Yes, the brake lights do work all the time, even with the ignition off.
I don't want to start criticising a car before comes on to the market, but...The pictures of the new MINI Traveller I saw in this week's AutoExpress had me aghast (well almost). Mainly as regards the number and thickness of pillars between the body and roof - a thick A, a B at the front of the rear door, a C to the trailing edge of the rear door, a D where you normally expect a D, and finally an E where the two tailgate doors meet. What's the visibility going to be like out of this? And will people bother, so long as they have the latest fashion accessory?

Visibilty out wouldn't be high on my list of priorities either - I think if a car had 'bad' visibility, you'd either adapt to it, or put up with it and move on to something else before too long. Another point I should have made earlier was about 'retro design' (a tautology in my opinion). The original Austin Mini Traveller had those vertically split doors, so the bods at BMW seemed to think 'lets copy that, no matter what current structural needs get in the way', and you end up the mess I described earlier.

Hi
I don't know these ones in detail, but the Laguna centre caps are four prongs plus a little raised bump on the wheel which means the cap only goes one way into the hole. Hope this helps.
