Hi All,
My mother has a problem with her A3 Tdi (51 plate) : the indicators work intermitently and then central locking and interior lights developed a problem. A change of fuse appeared to do the trick initially and all functioned again but the indicators have since deteriorated. Any solutions gratefully received. Could it be it just needs a new indicator stalk as it keeps blowing the fuse or something similar ? If so, does anyone have a good source of used Audi A3 indicator stalk/switches ?

Hello everyone,
I hope someone can give me a definitive answer to a simple question: What is the kerb weight of my car? The only weight figure in the V5C log book tells me 1780 kg,
The chassis plate says 2340, 4440 and 1040 kg but no indication as to what each figure refers to.
I need to know which figure to use to calculate the percentage for towing a caravan.
Thanks
Andrew

Simplicate and add lightness!! Read more
I reckon the 4440 is the max gross train weight - also relevant for towing. No idea on the others though.

I am changing the right outer booth on the drive shaft of my zx 95
stationwagon 1.8.
I just wonder how to draw it from the gearbox?
It yokes back and forth about 50 mm.
But I can't get it to let go.
Do you have a picture from the repair manual and/or text describing the
howto instruction?
Many thanks from Mikey in Sweden. Read more
Mikey,
Presume you are talking about the long shaft that runs across the back of the engine? To get this out you need to release the bearing on the back of the engine. Look under the car, behind the engine just to the right of centre and on the left hand side of the bearing and you will see 2 bolts next to the shaft. Slack the nuts right off (a right pain - you need a deep 11mm socket) then push the bolts towards the right of the car, then rotate them 90°. You should now be able to withdraw the shaft - although they can sometimes need persuading on the back of the bearing with a hammer and drift. If you have some movement in that bearing already chances are somebody has bent the bolts already - they can be tough to get out, but you need to bend them in towards the shaft whilst tapping the end of the bolt (nut wound right back to protect the thread!) with a small hammer.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
Been suffering lack of power and a bit of black smoke on my TD escort, it was fine one minute then pulled from a junction and it was drastically slower struggeling to reach 50mph, there also doesn't seem to be any turbo surge now either but it was only minimal before, the turbo is spinning though.
Had it at a garage and they can't seem to find whats wrong with it. They mentioned cleaning out the EGR valve - where do i find this ???
Any other suggestions ??

The common advice is to disconnect the EGR by pulling off the vacuum tube and blanking it off.
A friend who runs a small independant garage tells me has done this many times on older cars.
Hello everyone
I've recently bought a 51 plate vectra 2.0dti club and it has run in just over 61k miles.
I'm thinking this is the time to get the timing belt changed, but someone mentioned to me that this model of car uses a chain therefore it wont need any belt change.
Can anyone clarify if this is definitely the case with the model of car that I have bought.
Cheers Read more
It's a chain.

Hi just a quickie before I drive around in rush hour M25, anyone know what type of hose clip VAG use on the '96(N) Passat 2.0l, both my Passats have the same awkward hose clip, that connects the rigid PCV hose to the flexible hose to air intake / cam cover.
I can best describe it as a round, flat steel clip which is fastened by "hooking" the outside over a series of "ridges" on the inside. It was a sod to get off and I am losing the will to live trying to fasten it, any ideas what tool I need or should I cut my losses and go and buy a jubilee clip to replace it!
Cheers

I replaced a few Nissan clips with jubilee clips - the OE ones rust together over a couple of years, and they're impossible to remove without half a can of WD40, or sometimes a hacksaw. Jubilee clips are a far better design IMO, and so much easier to remove when the need arises.
Came across this video of a bike accident on a biking website and thought it might be of interest
to the bikers on here and the non bikers.
It shows in no uncertain terms how vunerable us two wheel riders are in an accident.
Luckily the rider was not badly injured, but shocking all the same.
You can watch the video by scrolling to the bottom of the report.
Apologies if you have already seen it.

At least they have the driver of the Audi which pulls into the layby banged to rights for only one brake light...
I ask as I have just had all four of my wheel re-balanced 4 months after I had 4 new tyres wih valves and balancing.
First wheel they took off was 65g out of balance. I asked if they would rectify free of charge and he said that as it had been 4 months he couldn't. He also said that as tyres wear out the wheels become out of balance - is this true?
The other three wheels were worse.
After he found out that all 4 wheels were out of balance he didn't charge me for any of the work, but made it clear that he was doing ME a favour. Was he?, or does it sound like they hadn't balanced them properly four months ago?
Also, I had my front discs and pads replaced last week as they were warped - could the out of balance wheels cause the discs to warp? Read more
First job before balancing is to remove any old weights, my tyre fitter takes off the tyre and then the weights, then fits the new tyre and balances. I suggest you take the car somewhere where they know what they are doing.
My VW Golf is coming up for its first variable service, which I'm having done about 2 months short of the actual time indicated (as this will be more convenient for me).
Elsewhere, on various VW websites I have been told that the time required for this service is 0.9 hours of labour and that the price should not be > £150 max. On booking my car in at the main dealer, from whom I bought said car, I was told that the cost would be £259 and this was based on 1.5 hours labour.
I have phoned other VW main dealers within a 15 mile radius and have been quoted an even higher figure than this but never less. I've also emailed others, but it seems their policy to ignore my emails requesting a quote for this service.
I, for convenience, don't want to travel to all ends of the country in order to save money and so will go ahead with my nearest VW dealership, of course.

Pollen filters are usually changed every service. Quite right too they
quickly get full of muck and hamper the airflow badly
I wouldn't be surprised if there are lots of people who don't routinely change them, because they're often located in the most ridiculous places. For example in my Almera, you need to remove the glovebox, take a hacksaw to the plastic behind it (the template for cutting is marked), and then remove the 2-piece filter one bit at a time. Madness! The part and labour would probably come to £50 if done at a main dealer.
Can somebody cleverer than me (oh, that's anyone then) tell me my figures aren't even remotely right in this scenario please? They are all approximate but I *think* they are in the right ballpark?
I work as long as it takes for my employer to pay me £100 gross. Let's say I get taxed at 40%.
So I have £60 left.
National insurance takes 9% of my £100 as well.
I have £51 left.
I decide to fill my car up with it. And the tax man takes £40 of that.
So for every £100 I earn towards my fuelling my car, the Government gets £89 of it straight back again? Is that roughly right?

You can't buy any petrol from January to June(?) because the gov takes all your salary in tax 'til then. After June you are tax free so should be able to buy some for your summer hols!

It could be the relay that is part of the hazard switch if this is the same design as the VW. Try flicking the hazard switch to see if it kicks the indicators in to life.
