Afternoon all,

I have a V40 2.0 turbo Auto, and am happy (as well as you can be) with the fuel consumption. I have come accross one of these magnetic fuel (pilot green) saving devices, and wondered if anyone on here has used one or has any opinions on them, i.e do they work?

This is the item in question.... (assuming links are allowed) if not ebay v4o fuel saving
cgi.ebay.co.uk/volvo-s40-v40-s60-s70-s80-v70-v60-v...m

They certainly have all the banter and sales patter onthem, but in the real world do they have an effect on your consumption and or smooth running of the car?

Is it worth spending the few quid on one or is it a gimmick and not worth it? Also anyone with a V40 have any ideas where to mount this?

Hi all

This question has been posted on a sperate forum, however further thought suggests this might be a more appropriate place for it.

I've recently replaced the pads and discs on a friend's R-plate 1.4 Clio Sport. Previously there was a periodic squeak coming from the brakes and my friend reported juddering through the brake pedal. We suspected a warped disc or something similar, however even with new components the squeak remains (although it is less pronounced and the juddering appears to have been addressed).

Does anyone have any ideas what the squeak could be? There were no anti-squeal shims in the brake pad box or indeed on the old pads, do the wire springs on the top of the pad serve this purpose, or have we missed something out? Also, the wheel bearing was replaced by a garage, could this be the cause/a contributory factor? Could the hub be incorrectly aligned, with a resultant high-point on the disc as it rotates?

All advice gratefully received

Just saw a cracking deal on a Renault Scenic on the web for my Father-in-Law saving almost £4k on list price. Has anyone out there used www.uk-car-discount.co.uk/ to buy a new car?

I'm having a mysterious squeaking coming from (as far as I can tell) the passenger side front wheel.

It doesn't happen when the car is cold (i.e if stationary for a few hours) but once warmed up for 10mins of urban driving the noise appears. This has lead me to beleive that it's a brake issue?

It happens under braking which would lead to the usual suspects (dirty or fading brakes etc) but more worryingly it starts to happen everytime I turn right (again only once the car is warmed up).

The noise stopped yesterday during heavy rain but has resumed this morning once dry.

Are the two likely to be connected? Also, the tracking is out; would this be of any relevance?

I've booked it in for a 'free' brake test at ATS (and to get the tracking done) to make sure but would dodgy brakes make the noise when turning? My colleague tells me he had a similar problem and it was a suspension issue? Read more

Its a girls car lets face it. Local to me there is a Smart Fortwo in pink with a white racing stripe down it and pink interior. Its owned by a hairdresser with huge hoop earings and lots of slap.... so there is a market for these pink jobbies, just not many men in that market!
My ex wife wanted me to get her Talbot Avenger resprayed in metallic baby pink, so I think its perhaps a way to stop men driving a girls car? Certainly works eh.

Hi all - just seen the above car advertised and arranged a test drive. It's up for £4k has had 2 previous owners and is being sold by a main dealer. The car looks very clean and tidy inside and out having done less than 20k. Have had a look at HJ's renowned CBCB entries for the range but would be interested in any additional feedback - especially with regard to: what to look out for, potential problems etc.

Also when we enquired about insurance it came up, apparently, as LPG enabled but the details on the net don't meniton this.

Speaking as a layman when it comes to cars, any advice/feedback would be most gratefully received!

Cheers. Read more

I know it may be unfashionable to say it, but I would always be wary of owning an ex-Motability car. From personal experience I would say they may not always have been driven 'as intended'. Take a close look at the paintwork, too.

Not a word usually associated with Vectras I know. Engine runs fine normally, but when I switch the aircon on, under light engine loads the engine feels a bit lumpy. If I switch off the aircon while it is doing this, the engine smooths out and all is as it should be. Has anyone got any ideas please? Read more

Just purchased a car that has the THB Bury car kit installed. It has a 'Take and Talk' adapter for the old Nokia 3 series phones.

Before buying an adapter for my current phone (around £50) I dug out an old nokia 3310 to see if it all worked.

When I get a call the radio will mute but I can't hear the phone ring and when answered the caller can hear me but I can't hear them.

Does anyone have this system? should the sound come through the car stereo?

Thanks Read more

I have been using Bury car kits in the fleet of about 24 cars for over 2 years and they are fine. It all depends on the quality of the installation. They should use the car stereo, and mute the radio as you describe, but the problem you are having is either a fault on the old handset, or a wiring fault in the installation.
The interchangable cradles mean that you do not have to install a new car kit if the handset changes!
THB Bury are the biggest manufacturers of car kits in Europe so they are generally top rate and we have had no problems.
Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,

I was changing wiper pivots on the car and I wonder if the cowl cover has to be sealed really tight to the windshiled (the windshield side of the cover). When I was taking it off the plastic lip that runs along the cover didn't seem to have any traces of sealant (or may be it dried up over time).

Should I apply some sealant to it ? If yes, of what kind ? I've got some silicone sealant, but I fear it will glue too hard and it will be a nightmare to get off later if required. Or may be just some silicone grease will help ?

I also managed to break one pin (damn!), the one on the driver side, upper coner near the edge of the cover. I'm not sure how important this pin is as it is close to the edge where the cover is held by the windshiled side weatherstrip anyway. I presume these should be available from the dealers ? Or are any motor factors good for automotive plastic fastener assortments ?

P.S. The car leaked twice this winter actually (long before I touched the cowl cover). The first time I traced it to the bonnet release cable grommet, which came off. But the second time I couldn't trace it to anything. I wonder if this could be related to the possibly dried up sealant on the cowl cover.

Thanks

Bit late but....
The air intake is under the cowl, behind the wiper motor.

I fixed one of my wiper pivots using a spare nozzle from some silicone sealer!
