Hi,
Similar to one about a Vectra. My "spanner" light has come on recently, seems that the 30deg heat may have had an effect. Unformtunately it is now happening even when it is cooler, but after driving a fair distance, and probably when i am going over 3500 revs - although I can't be sure of this. Switching the engine off for a second clears the fault. An engineer friend check the fault code and said it was something to do with the throttle housing. It has happened a few times since its original appearance.
Can anybody advise whether I need to be concerned about it, and if so is this likely to be a software or hardware fix please?
Cheers,

I am about to replace my Pug 406Hdi and have decided on VAG 2.0 tdi engine as it seems the only modern diesel which is not common rail.
I would like an automatic but are faced with the above types, neither is the proven auto technology. I want a car that I can keep for years without major expense, hence not wanting another "common fail"
Are these new auto boes reliable. I hear of 7 plate clutches now being fitted to multitronics, does this cure the earlier problems they had? I do not want to be a guinea pig...again!!

Could someone tell me why common rail is a backward step

I don't think it is. Like anything if you have suffered bad experience you might like to
avoid.

PD system can reputedly generate more pressure but apparently it is not really
required (unless you want to use the fuel line to cut out 1 metre thick blocks ice to make
an igloo...)

Looking at the advert again I am quite pleased I didn't get it. I will follow your advice and head to an independent and/or keep my eyes peeled for a nicer one.

Just curious how you do it these days? Is it hard to do? Read more

I dont like french cars at the best of times so no chance of me bagging a Renault! I think perhaps the cheaper end of the small auto market seems to be the best - there just doesnt seem to be enough cars to go around.
I think I will look into just doing Suzuki, Daihatsu and maybe older VW Polos. I dont want to sell cars with faults or have boomerangs all the time, so they sound like the safest bets.

I see there is a 14% rise in maximum recommended price from early October. So if you test is due after this date, it may be economical to take it a few weeks early.

14 % in line with inflation then.

RPI - no; CPI - no; inflation - yes (i.e. gas, electricity, petrol, council tax etc)

most common problen of this engine is head failure this is due to overheating and head warping is it goes any further then engine siezure is likely you need to remove glow plugs or injectors then turn engine over by hand I repeat over by hand to see if water comes out if this is so then head or head gasket failure is likely if no water is detected then partial engine siezur likely [megradad]

Trying to decide which one to get - Mondeo handles nicer, Honda has a nicer image !

I'm looking at getting a 4 year old one either way - both seem around £4k for a 1.8L (old shape Accord) - anyone got any experience with either of these at this age ?

Will the better build quality of the Honda make it cheaper in the long-run ... Read more

DP

I wouldn't have thought you'd go too far wrong with either.

Both have a great reputation for reliability and longevity. The Mondeo will be slightly better to drive, the Accord probably slightly more reliable.

I was just thinking about a few years ago when I drove a basic Porsche Boxter.
The dealer who is a mate of mine was all hyped up telling me how much id like it... but i didnt like it at all. I thought it was a great tool, but utterly souless with a weak enhaust note, dull cabin and in silver esp, hardly stands out in the crowd. It drove nice enough, but didnt feel that fast and was one of those cars that left me feeling a bit cheated. Am I the only one?

I remember driving an Alfa GTV V6 and despite it being hopelessly flawed, it sounded fantastic and had the sort of flair that id expect from a sportscar at £30,000+ - it felt great and I remember not wanting to hand over the keys - surely this is what a sportscar is all about? Read more

Im glad someone does! If I was spending that kind of money, id be looking at Honda S2000, Morgan V6, Nissan 350Z or if I was daring, a TVR of some description.
The Honda does all that the Porsche does, but with out the 'I bought a cheap, artificially slow Porsche' image. Plus its that much cheaper. But then I dont have self-image issues!
Not sure I like the Nissans styling but it seems to have many fans. Morgan is likely to be an interesting ownership experience and more raw than the more modern stuff, but less practical.
TVR if I had something else for when it breaks down.
Either way, I cant imagine spending £35k on a sportscar that was devoid of emotion. Then again, im not an accountant ( i see alot of these parked in accountancy firm car parks ), so maybe its a midlife crisis purchase?
