Ever since I bought the car I have had problems with the alignment of the headlamps. Recently the local dealer had to replace the some of the self levelling items as they were faulty. The car was returned with the lights aligned skywards, blinding oncoming traffic. When I complained the garage told me they had had a problem, (why?, how could they return a car like this, QC is abysmal) took the car back, spoke with Nissan and now they claim lights are perfectly aligned, using their MOT testing equipment. The problem is that the roadway is well lit, but forward vision is very limited. (Road signs, reflectors etc)
I am fed upwith the garage's incompetence and would like to align them myself. Is this possible - the EEC ruled all Xenon lights must be automatically self levelling, so can I just twiddle a screw and align them or is it a computer related task - put into a 'align mode' perhaps?
Any advice would be appreciated, I certainly cannot go into winter as they are at present.

i personally would go back and get them to show me the height and pattern they are giving on their mot equipment,if they refuse i would get an opinion off your local vosa as they may be commiting an offence by letting the car go out if the lights are indeed out of alignement
Anyone own or driven the above new model variant?
The 180bhp D5 engine seems to get the thumbs up from everyone, and when put into a small-ish car I'd imagine it'll fly? Got my eye on one... Read more
I guess it must also be possible to fit the D5
and Geartronic into an S-Max and Galaxy.
HJ
You would think so as the S-Max has the 5 cyl 2.4 petrol turbo already though it would also make sense for Ford to fit the Ford / PSA twin turbo 175 bhp 2.2d.
My mother unfortunately had an accident 3 weeks ago where a child ran out into the road straight into the car, travelling at approx 25 mph. The child was harmed with minor scratches, however, obviously shocked. Significant damage to the bonnett was caused. The police and ambulance were called and 5 witness statements were taken by the police which all stipulated it was the fault of the child. The child was appologetic, admitting it was his fault stating that he didn't look properly. My mother has had a letter form the police stating that they would not be taking any further action. It appears that the family are now trying to sue her over the incident. She was deeply upset about the whole incident as was going to claim through the insurance and not request anything from the family. Now they are suing she is thinking about countersuing for the trauma, distress and damage to the car.
Will the insurance company just pay the family off as it may be a cheaper option? Or does she have a valid case?
Would appreciate comments, Matt. Read more
Thanks for taking my comments the way they were inteded! It is just that there could be a shedload of money involved in dealing with whatever problems your Mother has about her feelings for the car. If getting rid of it is the only way, she will be happier, but perhaps poorer. In the end she has to live with or get rid of it and it is her choice, of course.
I have recently bought a 2001 Astra 1.6 and I would like to titivate the engine compartment. Generally it's not bad under the bonnet, with the exception of the air inlet duct which I guess is an Al alloy casting. This has oxidised, or whatever, and now has a grey, sugary appearance. Does anyone have any idea how this may be smartened up?

Thanks Ashok - I'll try that.
Evening all,
A Mate is thinking of buying a S Type Jag 2.5 sport on a 53 plate, what should he look for problem wise, are they a good buy, or a dog?the one he has looked at is around 15k
Views please?? Read more
Had mine for 4.5 years and love it (3.0 SE). A 53 plate will have had a couple of the early problems well ironed out, so there shouldn't be really much to worry about.
If i'm to be really picky, boot is shallow (compared to the competition) although it goes go back a fair way, so not an issue unless you regularly want to carry trunks.
The motoring magazines complain of a compact cabin, although i'm 5'10" and far too large for my own good and really can't see it.
Apart from that I'd be pushed to have a moan. My Jag magazine says some of them suffered splits in the water reservoir at the top of the radiator, but mine hasn't & I would have thought a '53 plate woud have had that covered.
Tell him to buy it, you only live once...... and it's built in this country, by a British work force, has lots of heritage and has plenty of toys in it..... (I know it's owned by an American company and has the underpinnings of a Lincoln but hey unless you spend silly money there's nowt British left).
Earlier today, and in the knowledge that this is a widespread issue, I went to my local Volvo dealer today to show that the leather on my 2003 V70's steering wheel is "delaminating" (for want of a better description) in one area in to pieces that look like burnt bin liner plastic, and to ask for their support in a goodwill payment from VCUK.
Was very pleased to receive the straight off reply "Known problem. Standard 50% goodwill contribution From VCUK for all Volvos less than four years old". Politely and professionally handled as was the offer of when to do the work, and nice to see after the (admittedly much more costly to Volvo) ETM debacle that's had much airing in the press.
Something for the CBCB, HJ?
For the record, the cost to me will be £130, this including the labour for this 45 minute book time "whilst I wait" job that involves swapping over the existing switchgear and airbag.

The problem is a poor choice of leather treatment that reacts to some hand creams and some people's sweat, for want of a better description. My Bro's V70 (recently sold) of similar age (a few months older than mine) did not have the fault and neither has Dad's 1998 S80 owned from new. It is, however, quite a common problem hence Volvo's entirely reasonable and sensible standpoint. Especially given that I imported my car - so had the standard European two year warranty but no UK dealer warranty for the third year (how these things normally work) I have no complaint. I saved enough dosh to buy another car, new, so if this is the "cost", fine. Even if my car was UK supplied, I still think it reasonable on a car over three years old.
To answer a question in the thread; my steering wheel started to react after a couple of years, but because it didn't get any worse and the affected area was tiny and hardly noticeable, I left it alone. In the recent extreme heat - so now after three years of car age - the problem worsened very (very) rapidly and the area of leather held by my right hand is now puckered and wrinkled in the manner described.
Hi all,
Just out of total curiosity im wondering what my car would be worth.
None on autotrader so cant really put a value on it.
Description
Audi Coupe GT
1984 B reg
2.0 5 cylinder Bosch k-jetronic injection.
power steering, electric windows (pasenger side not working)
alloy wheels
half leather interior
Laser red paintwork (not faded)
LPG CONVERTED
128000 miles with lots of previous MOTs.
The car has had 4 previous owners (one bloke from 1984 to 1986, another from 1986-2002 (father) when he passed away it became sons (2002-2004) then he passed it onto his brother 2004-2005. I then purchased the vehicle.
There is not rust around the car, arches are solid, drives fine. Its totally immaculate for a 22 year old car. Lots of history and receipts including orifinal sales invoice from 1984 car costing £9400
Then another invoice from same garage in 1986 for £7500 (first owner px's for newer audi in 1986) and second owner bought.
Alloys need refurbing.
6 months tax and test.
How much do you guys reckon this car is worth......I have no intention of selling it as it serves me fine and I really enjoy driving it.
Its a very fast car....ok not to tdays standards but it must have been something in 1984 even today it really shifts!!
Cheers

The Ghia X Mondeos, from around '03' plate onwards, have a 17" alloy, whose outer rim is a machined aluminium surface, coated in lacquer. There is no paint on this section of the alloy.
Unfortunately, in spite of the fact that the wheels are looked after (no kerbing, scrapes etc.), my "53" plate vehicle's wheels are already looking unsightly, with the lacquer starting to come away from the wheels, and Ford is hiding behind some daft, customer unfriendly exclusions in its so called, "warranty". Am I alone in thinking that for a 30 month old vehicle with 30,000 miles on the clock, that this is neither normal, nor reasonable ???
Many years ago I owned a beat up 10 year old Peugeot 205 GTi with flaking alloys - but a £22,000 Ford ? Looks like a rubbish wheel design, and poor manufacturing quality to me.....shame Ford won't admit it.
I'd like to hear from anyone else who has had this problem on the Ghia X Mondeo.

Some interesting comments, thanks. I first raised the issue with Ford in March, and we are now in August.....Ford are, at best, being stubborn and, at worst, being silent. Time to up the stakes.......! Watch this space !!
If anyone else has the same model as me (Ghia X '52' plate onwards, with standard 17" wheels), and has corrosion on their alloys - please let me know.
I would like to adjust my headlights for driving in France? I am informed that there is "a lever" behind the headlight for flipping them? Can any one shed any light on where this lever might be - drivers side, passenger side, and what it might look like etc. I'd be grateful for any help.

sorry, 'selling' you not telling :-(

Have a hard look for any possibillity of an air leak into the filter housing. There may be a white plastic water sensor mounted somewhere on the back. I have had one that leaked - but only under suction. Also check the rubber priming bulb for perishing [if fitted - can't remember.]
