Question Astra automatic
plonker

I have just bought a 2001 1.6, 8 valve Astra hatchback with an automatic gearbox. Would someone let me know if there is a lockup clutch in the torque converter such that gearbox input shaft is locked to the crankshaft. If so, does this coincide with the change into 4th gear? Any comment about the operation of the gearbox would be welcome.

1988 vw polo...rear fog lamp doesnt work!!

ive tested with a test lamp and theres no power at the rear lamp connector , no power at fuse number 8 which the manual states is the rear fog, but i have power at the multi plug for the switch

would that indicate the switch is faulty?

what order does it go??? i.e battery -switch-fuse-bulb or what?? Read more

Dynamic Dave

theres no reason a 21 watt bulb would need a relay

Unless it was used as a latching device if the switch was only a push button, and not a make & break type.

Hi

The windscreen washers on both my Ford Mondeo and my wife's Ford Fiesta dont seem to work that is the motors work, but little or no water comes out, I have tried to send a jet of water down each as was suggested to me by honest John and today I stuck the garden hose in each bottle and tried to flush out anything that may be blocking the pipes, but still nothing, has anybody else had this problem and if so could you please tell me how you resolved it. It seems strange that both cars are afffected at the same time.

Thanks for the tip mate you were quite right in both case both filters were blocked, proberbly due to me putting tap water in and we are in a hard water area, that will teach me. Both the jobs on the Mondeo and Fiesta to sort this out were quite easy to do, so thanks once again.

I regularly drive along B roads and lesser A roads and there seems to be an increasing incidence of people driving at me on my side of the road. Bends, blind bends and straight roads. Last night I had a guy coming at me with the white lines right down the centre of his car on a blind bend.

Is it a general sign of people who shouldn't be let out on their own or are we phasing in driving on the right?

On left handers, I will regularly straddle the white line. I
do this deliberately and regard it in a positive light. AFAIK
it's perfectly legal and indeed I believe it's considered good practice
rather than poor driving.

The trouble with doing that is that oncoming drivers don't know whether you are aware what you are doing and are diving safely as you say, or are one of the growing band of of arrogant drivers who don't care, or perhaps just haven't noticed.
Either way, I never take the chance, so I generally give a vigorous hoot as a warning.
Sorry, but if you APPEAR to be about to drive into me, I have to assume that you might.

It's the same with people edging out of side turns - maybe they have seen me, maybe they haven't. So it's only safe to use the horn for its proper purpose, and warn them of my presence.

Hi there, first time user. I'd have searched for something similar but i can't find a search tool for the forum itself.

I recently was involved in an accident in which i was shunted from behind while parked at a traffic lights. We have proceeded to lauch a 3rd party claim using a friend's accident repair centre. My worry is this: My car has a custom 3 stage pearlescent paintjob, alloy wheels, lowered, big brakes, manufacturer bodykit (taken from other models - not fibreglass!) etc. etc. None of which is declared to my insurance company (i know! silly!)

BUT my question is this : The person who shunted me has admitted 100% liability for the accident, and since we're not using my insurance, the undeclared modifications shouldn't come into it should they? I mean, she could just as easily hit a rolls royce or even a new focus and the damage would have been just as expensive if not more expensive, she could have also driven into someone's fence or something and that would have had to be replaced. Are they going to screw me over and claim it's a standard escort? Because i have to declare the modifications to my insurer, not everyone who hits me!

What am i to expect over the next few weeks (engineer coming tuesday to see the car)? In my opinion the car will need a respray if it is to ever look as good as it did before, but the bodyparts actually being replaced won't come to more than a few hundred pounds........

Anyone had any experience of anything like this? The third party's insurer is Markerstudy if that helps.

Was just browsing through a Merc magazine in WH SMiths.

happened to notice some dealers advertising M and N reg E300D estates about 100K miles - they were asking £8500 !!!

Why would anyone pay that kind of money for one of those ??

Might be a good car but surely that is nearly 3 times the true value of hte car ?

PEtrol engined version would surely be selling for well under 1/2 or even 1/3 of that price ?

Will anyone buy these - who and why ?

A friend had this occur when there was a moth flitting about in the car. Another suggestion is to close the fresh air vents as gusts of wind can cause a disturbance in the car which can be mistaken by a movement sensor.

Seeing as Alfa are pinning so much hope on the 159, has anyone actually seen one on the road yet.

I'm only asking because their is an Alfa dealer in my neck of the woods who sells other makes as well. I'm seeing plenty of them but no Alfa's.

The motoring press in general have praised the 159, so what's the story? Read more

I was talking to an Alfa UK bloke at FoS, I mentioned to him I hadn't seen many. He said they're selling well, and they were introduced 3 months ago, which is approx. the lead time on them, and he said that many are taking delivery around now. May be just sales patter but sounded logical to me.

Now, all things considered - depreciation, fuel costs, servicing, spares/parts, tax, insurance - what's the cheapest car to run that you could buy for £3k to £4k that is actually a car (drives well) and not a tin boxon wheels? Read more

Would recommend anyone considering a non-turbocharged SDI go for a long test drive before commiting to purcase - 60-80 performance is good, but 0-60 takes a lifetime. Can't believe they still offer a Golf with this engine - even the Koreans etc moved on long ago
