Dox is spot on - both cars will have attributes that you will like or not and once driven you can decide what your priorities are. e.g. If its tactile quaity, looks and style that appeal then I think you will have 4 rings on the front of your next purchase. If its reliability and customer care that are most important then it will be a Honda.
Let us know how you get on.

how's this for bad luck?

coming up to a pedestrian crossing....it turns amber...i'm about 10 feet away...make a split decision and drive through the amber....only to find an unmarked police car on the oncoming lane argh!

i looked into the cop car as it pulled to a halt at the now red light - none of the bobbies seemed to be taking any interest in me....

should i still be worried?

the light was deffo still amber when i went through. normally i stop at amber, but just wasn't thinking at that precise moment.

It seems Longbridge will become a kit assembly plant for about 15,000 cars a year and with only an extra 200 employed. A far cry from the 6,000 that used to work there producing 110,00 cars.

Its time the Rover dog and MG were put down for good.

Yes, I have a friend too, with whom I don't talk anymore which in part is because he is a Rover/MG fanatic and belongs to the MG Car Club where I believe good discounts can still be obtained on such makes.

He still believes that they were the finest cars ever made and that anything 'German' or 'Japanese' should not be entertained by British people because of certain past connotations and is now, I would imagine, annoyed with me because I have a more liberal and sensible view and bought recently, what I thought would be the best value for my hard-earned cash. Yes, after owning two successive new Rovers up until 2004, decided to call it a day and bought a new MK 5 Volkswagen Golf.

I could not believe the difference there was in say, my last Rover (Rover 400i 5dr HB) and my present Golf, the latter being a world apart in terms of quality and perceived feel - it exudes class in all respects in contrast with the Rover although that wasn't a bad car in many respects.

No. Rover/MG should be left where it is and not resurrected. There is currently now too much competition offering better, up to date products. Rover would be left high and dry.

I think cat maybe on way out as it sounds like an internal rattling from exhaust system. I have previously read on HJ that you can rod the cat out and just leave empty. Is this relatively easy to do and would there be any increase in noise. Also, as I believe the car does not legally require a cat, could I just replace with a straight piece of pipe. Obviously Peugeot and gsf etc don't supply this bit. Anyone any ideas where from or if it is viable to try and source one.

In that case option would be to buy an early 306 TD pipe and modify that or weld in a suitable expansion box (most exhaust places will let you have old boxes for nothing).

I have recently had to replace the engine on my 2002 3 series due to the inlet manifold failing causing damage to the engine. I was wondering if anyone out there has also experianced this same problem and if so can I get in touch. Read more

Sorry to hear that, debris getting into the combustion chamber certainly won't do the engine any favours. I have seen pictures of split manifolds and it looks like just that, the plastic seam fails and and the top and bottom sections seperate.

As mentioned, the cars were fine once the manifolds were replaced, but then those manifolds remained intact after failure. Its likely that your manifold failure wasn't a similar seam split. Did you see the manifold at all, either before the engine was replaced or after it was removed?.

Very quick question, I'm looking to buy a New Honda Civic ES with some bits and bats on that takes the list price to just over £16100.

I wanted to buy at £15,000 but they said they couldn't get down to that price, the nearest they could go was to knock about £600 of the price.

I've since had a phone call where they have now said that they are able to give me one at £15,000 by Pre registering it, however I would be getting it brand new.

I've said I'll get back to them on Thursday - should I Deal or No Deal

any advice would be gratefull. Read more

Does anybody know if there is any easy way to remove the sheer-bolts on a P-reg Nissan Micra's ignition lock, please?

Also the steering wheel seems to be jammed on. Do I need to buy a special puller or is there any easy way around this? My Haynes manual says not strike the wheel. Read more

Thanks for the advice - I bought the car from an auction. It had been stolen and recovered, I've replaced the door locks but the ignition lock is more of a problem.

I think I might just leave it on and use the red key 'stub' that came with it to carry-on starting the car.

Question Smoking Vectra
Robes

I made the mistake of buying a Vectra (1996 DOHC 16V) from an auction to fix up. I have replaced the head gasket which was blown and the cam belt and now I just want to get rid of it and cut my losses. Although it now starts up and idles ok, after driven for about 5 miles blue smoke suddenly starts to pour from the exhaust. I have left it running in the driveway for over a half an hour and although a little smoky it will not seem to replicate the road test? Any advice on a low cost cure would be appreciated. Read more

Spoke to some of the old boys in the trade or ex-trade

only 1 of 4 had heard of it - the engine problem that is.

and yep - its true. but he said it occured on a 55k motor, 3 years old.
Nissan do know about it but offered no compensation, they punter paid £698 to put it right.

however all of them had heard of ECU faults on the primera and crankshaft sensor faults on the almera and almera tino.

think i might go for it
at £3000 it seems a good deal.
