What's the best time to buy a used car? Not just financially (Though obviously that's important!), but is there a certain time of year that the market will be most likely to have better condition cars?

When you read these magazines, stating the running costs "ppm".
How do they determined this.
I'm wanting to change my car shortly, so any help would be appreciated. Read more
Thanks Phil
I've checked Flt news and have the answers.
Following on from the "What's at the head of the queue?" thread, I wondered if other BR'ers had the same experiences as I do. It seems that almost every time a car gets in your way, blocks an exit, double parked, wrong lane trying to push back in, etc, in my experience it's almost invariably a Volvo estate.
Take a look next time, it's probably the same car at the head of that queue!

The odds alone against such a situation render it meaningless.

Saw the new SAAB 9 5 today for the first time.
That front end: Klingon mother ship or what?

I don't like the chrome strip on the back of the Vectra and Astra either.
As has been said, the 95 looks OK in light colours. I thought the previous 95 looked great in silver or grey.
About this time of year one's thoughts turn to summer.
How dire would a 214/216 convertible be?! Read more
I am 99.99999% sure that the 1.6 in the cabriolet is Honda, not the K Series. The bubble shaped 200 1.6 was definitely K Series, that's where the confusion sets in.
SWMBO sent me this and its quite addictive - I thought I would pass it on as its motoring related and a bit of fun for Friday .

Sorry to bring this old chestnut up again, but I'm not worried about engines or mechanicals, but seats. (Of all things).
In VAG group cars, how well do the seats stand up to high miles?
I guess if they are worn out you can just buy a new one - how much do they normally cost?
Any real shortfalls in buying a high miler? (Say 80,000-100,000 miles)
I always said my next car would be a 100k'er, but when it's your money you can't help think "That's an awful lot of miles..." Read more
I don't know about newer VAG group cars, but my 13 year old (and 111,500 mile) Polo seats are as good as new. No fading (despite not being garaged) no rips or tears neither. VERY hard wearing, and seem to stand up well to the test of time when compared to others.
performance is great---but when its rains or its cold---folding wing mirrors--dont work--hav to fiddle around with switch---

25k on a Golf
Thats ridiculous.
MTC
They are my sentiments entirely. I frequent the Golf website daily and am amazed at what the young trendies and overpaid executives and IT bods will fork out for their motors.
About £17k would, I suppose, be just about right as the starting point for one of these cars but prices in excess of £21k is absolutley ridiculous as, after all, it is just another Golf with added performance.
I speak as someone who now owns his first ever Golf (and maybe last if the dealers/car fail me).
The timing belt broke on my '98 1390cc Megane yesterday. AFAIK the engine is an E7J. Is there likely to be cylinder/valve damage with this engine after timing belt failing? Read more
according to my book your engine will have bent valves
this engine is fairly basic in design why not let a good local independant sort it for you rather than the main agent as their labour rates will be less?
Thought this might be a laugh, what with Bank Holiday Monday!
What motoring terms have you heard that you don't understand?
The only one of mine I can remember at the moment is 'cooking' model. Quite an old term I think.

I looked for "fly deflector" (circa 1960) but it wasn't there.

L\'escargot.
Under 'bug deflector' (US English).
Is anyone else infuriated by the American usage of 'bug' for absolutely any insect, beetle or arachnid whether flying or crawling, and of the generic term 'monkey' for all primates including the great apes?
These usages always make me sneer and feel superior. Illiterate Yanks, mumble mumble...

On a quiet day at the auctions if you feel brave and can take a day off work.
I went looking for an estate to supplement my VW Transporter.By late afternoon with only a few cars remaining, and fewer buyers, I bought a Polo 16V..why oh why oh why..ran it for 18 months then sold it for £300 more than I had paid, which covered servicing and advertising costs.Good ole VW!
