Rather sooner than expected, I've been promoted and now qualify for a subsidised lease car.

It's a four year lease and includes everything bar the kitchen sink - private miles, servicing, tax and insurance plus being able to claim a small amount for business miles.

I've worked out a shortlist and had the quotes, and my contribution for the following cars, including income tax, per month for four years, is (all specc-ed with metallic paint):

Honda Jazz 1.4 dsi sport £110
Fabia vRS with added cruise control and side airbags: £130
Audi 1.9tdi SE: £220
Audi 1.9tdi Sport with cruise control: £230
Ibiza Cupra with cruise control: £230

I think the Audis and the Ibiza are out of budget, so realistically that leaves the Jazz and the vRS. I'm totally in love with the cheeky little jazz and all it's clever little touches, but the vRS is what I've wanted for so long! The only thing stopping me going for the vRS is that all our cars come on four year leases and it's looking a bit tired now. The dealer said there will be a tiny change in May (body coloured door handles) and might be a new model out next year but I can't wait until then to change my car. On the other hand, the Jazz has just had it's facelift and there are apparently no plans to make it look like a plastic Civic.

I pootle around Hampshire quite a lot, and there's still fairly regular trips back to the midlands, so it needs to be a good motorway car. I don't want to be filling up all the time, hence the diesels, but the Honda has amazing economy.

So would the sensible thing to do be to get the Honda? Or would you go for the budget busting Audis/Cupra? Or the Skoda? My promotion equates to about an extra £300 a month after tax, so that would eat that up, but on the other hand I wouldn't be paying out for car related stuff so would probably still be better off. Does a Honda Jazz say 'boss' though, like an A3 does?

Congratulations PG - belated as I've been on holiday for a week.

Judging by the various published surveys, not to mention the Skoda drivers on this forum, you'll be very happy when you eventually become FabiaGirl. (Or you could stay as PoloGirl just as I've stayed as Avant, in memory of the best car I've ever had. I was seduced by a good deal on a B-class, but it'll be back to an Audi next time if I can possibly afford it.)

From what everyone says, I think I'd be missing the A4 less if I'd gone for a Skoda. Best of luck with yours.

How do I get to the airbag slip ring?

I guess some of you will read the title to this thread and think its a post about "another low life scum illegal immegrant who mows down children while high on drugs"

Well, you would be wrong, its about my dear Mums car.

So here's the story from start to end...

A few years back my Mum bought a new (second hand) car. It needed Tax so she went to the post office and bought a years tax, the PO took the log book and said they would send it to the DVLA. One year later Mum notices that the tax is about to expire and realises that she never got the log book back. After several phone calls to DVLA she managed to buy another years tax although I'm unsure of the exact details.

So lets fast forward another year to the present day. Mum is dead.

The car is sat on the drive, the MOT has expired, the Insurance has expired and the tax has run out. I can't find the log book and a reminder for the tax never arrived. Mum died on Christmas eve and the tax expired at the end of March. I now have the letters of administration so I can deal with her estate. It is possible that the issue with the log book was never sorted out properly and the car may still be registered with the previous owner.

It's been a long time since I've posted on this board, although I read here almost every day. Previous experience has shown me that there is a huge amount of knowledge that you guys (and girls!) are willing to share, so here are my questions...

1 - Should I SORN the car? If so how? Am I liable for a fine?
2 - How do I get a new log book?
3 - What do I do next?
4 - The car is not worth much (I would guess around £800), whats the best way to dispose of it?

Thanks in advance.

BTW - If any smokers want help to quit, I'm happy to share the details of my mother's death with you (privately). I used to be a smoker.....

As for the tax she said

I can't declare SORN as I'm not the registered keeper.

You may not be the registered keeper, but from what you said above about letters of administration I'm assuming that you are an executor of your mother's estate. Whether it still holds today I can't be sure but when my father died 8 years ago DVLA let me transfer ownership of the vehicle and re tax with a covering letter and evidence that I was his executor as the vehicle was still part of his estate that I, as executor, was able to deal with.
Might be worth trying.

this is pretty important and i need to get a definite by 6 tonight, is a bankers draft from say HSBC, lloyds, or halifax as examples, ok to accept as payment for a car sold privately?

the car is selling for £5000 and obviously we need to be 100% this is safe before we release the car.

can they be faked? the buyer is genuine from what i can see but just in case.

Time to put it on Ebay.

Post it tomorrow, Thursday, on a 10 day sale, and it will finish on a Sunday or on Sunday for a 7 day sale). Gives more people more chance to see it, and they'll bid it up on Sunday evening instead of watching Antiques Roadshow, Heartbeta, The Royal etc. Aim to get the sale to finish say 8-9 pm - you can pay a wee bit extra to specify the start time, and it will finish exactly 7/10 days later, to the second.

Don't set the reserve too high, or you will put buyers off. they'll push it quite high enough for you to be very satisfied. I'm assuming that you don't live in West Cornwall, Skye or Inverness.

Take at least 10 photos on a bright day showing all panels, interior, speedo and supporting docs such as MoT and SH. Make it clear they bid to buy, not to come an tyre kick. Look at plenty of car ads on Ebay, and copy their best bits. Put in a obile no. for people to call, as some may want to view. They may even make you an offer on the spot.

Advice appreciated...

I have been keeping my eyes open for a reliable economical diesel run around for a while now and I spotted the above with 25,000 miles on the clock in Autotrader. It is a private seller and they are asking £4495 which seems a bit optimistic to me after looking at the valuation guides.

Are the Rover 25's ok or is there any glaring problems that I should know about?

I have a L-reg 106 1.4D at the moment and it feels like the clutch is about to go (again!) but apart from clutch problems it has always been mega reliable and I wouldn't mind something similar again - just not a Peugeot because of the weird pedal situation!

As for why it has to be a diesel, I just prefer to spend more on the car and less on the fuel... I had a 106 1.1 and put in £20 a week, a Corsa 1.0 and put in the same, a 206 2.0 HDI and put in £25 a month and the same for the 106 1.4D. For some reason I don't seem to get the book figures with a petrol? Maybe its something to do with being a woman driver...

So would I but I can't afford to spend more! You should meet my mum...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - all input welcome!

This may sound like a silly question, but how do I know if my air con is working? I have the new shape Scenic with Climate Control. Today I put it down to min temp, which appears as 15 degrees and the AC indicator comes on.

But it didn't feel as cold as I remember it was last summer. Outside it was only 11 degrees but car had been sitting in direct sunlight. Could it be that the air con was working ok, its just that there wasn't the big differential in internal / external temp that you get in the summer?

I even overrode the climate and put the fan on to full speed but although it blew cold, I don't know if it was that cold.

Is there an easy foolproof way to check? Read more

Hi, I currently own a Vauxhall Zafira 2.0 Ltr DTI, Elegance. Registered 09/2000 and has covered 91,000 miles.

Like changing the oil on this car I needed specific tools to undo the sump plug etc (Torx),however, I need to change the front discs and pads on my Zafira. I have a haynes manual to refer too, but can anyone advise on specific tools I may need to buy inorder to remove the brake callipers and pads, I am thinking of sockets etc.

Thank you

I too have managed to previously get away with allen keys as opposed to socket hex's. All you need to do is use a piece of tubing on the allen key to increase the leverage needed to undo the bolts.

I eventually made my own socket hex's though by butchering an old allen key set with a grinder to cut them down to size.

Hi All

I have recently bought a Golf GT TDi and the oil could do with being replaced.

Went to the local car parts shop and they have said speak with VW about the oil (is this just a fob off, or is there no other place to get oil for golf GT TDi's??)

Thanks

Alot of vw's are on a long life scheme so require engine oil that is different to conventional engine oils. Works out at £15/litre from vw.

Why did Rover release the 75 with a 116HP engine and a 130HP engine, when the only difference between them was the engine map?

And, why does the same engine produce 150HP in a BMW, again with nothing more than the computer code changed? I reckon the lacklustre performance of the CDT diesel in the 75's crippled their sales.

Was this a restriction placed upon Rover by BMW, who didn't want their share of the powerful diesel market infringed upon? Read more

Roly93

The engine fitted to the Rover 75 was of old technology
pre common rail design, unlike the 150 bhp fitted to the
3 series E46 BMW from September 2001 and now 163 bhp
as fitted to the latest E90 3 Series.
If you were running a company like BMW, you can`t exactly
blame them from witholding the latest technology from their competitors.!!!!

>>
Not so, they are common-rail, as I think are the engines in LR Freelanders, which are just de-tuned E46 BMW engines.
