years ago i brought a gunsons gas tester mk2..its the yellow one with a needle (no digital readout)

i never used it and kinda expect it to be none too accurate

has anyone used one and found it any good? with proof from a calibrated tester? Read more

Not particularly accurate but at least it gives you an indication that you're turning your CO up or down and that you are not way over the limit.

Just out of curiosity I had a look at cars' tyres as I walked through the local supermarket carpark. I was amazed at how many cars had tyres I'd never heard of. It made me wonder how many cars are fitted with dodgy cheap and nasty tyres.

I had similar problems with my T registered Ford Fiesta, heater was on all the time and then after a few months it seemed to die and I was left with no heating in the car. I took the advice of someone on a similar forum and changed the heater control valve and it was great, heating was back on. I went up to the hospital to visit a sick friend, a 20 minute drive and the heating was great. An hour later on my way home the heating would not come on, it had failed once more and that is nearly a year ago, I survived most of the winter without heating but I just cannot face another winter in the cold. Can anyone suggest what may have happened, please, and how to fix it ?
TIA, gm3suz

Hi all,

Car is 2003 (Old shape Toyota Avensis D4D)

For the last few months car has had a knocking sound (Sounds like something hitting / vibrating against the bodywork)whenever I start the engine up or if I accelerate in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. Knock seems to come from around the manifold area.

Noise does not happen if I rev the car whilst it is standing. Same revs and moving produces a knocking sound.

The knocking sound can only be heard from inside the car. Shaking exhaust does not replicate sound.

Any ideas, it is driving me mad as all I can hear on the way to work is this knock everytime I accelerate.

I can't replicate the sound any other way. Possibly thought it was engine mounting but doesn't make noise when revving stationary.

Thanks for replies.

It knocks a second after the accelerator is pressed. Just as if there is something moving (I have checked spare tyre, jack etc just in case) under a fair load. If I pull away slowly it does not knock. It always knocks when the engine is started.
The knock is usually a single knock, sometimes two.

When starting the engine there seems a bit of movement in the mounting, but I can't compare it to any other Avensis. It moves more than my VR6 golf but I would eguess that it is ok. Not very easy to look at the mounting.

When the exhaust is shaken underneath, there is no noise. I have just checked the movement underneath while starting and there is not as much movement as shaking it.

My last try was to get the exhaust taken off then out back on again. A few places have told me that they don't want to do this (presumably as they aren't making much money out of it.)

I can't recreate the knock any other way which is the annoying part as the knock can't be heard outside the car, only inside.

I got flashed approaching a Gatso last night on the opposite side of the road, it looked like a standard one, why was that? I was on full beam so so I think it unlikely it read my reg, worrying though. Read more

Adam - I appreciate that this information may not be publsihed in every county, Moble camera locations that is. I have done a little research and here is a link

Round The Bend

I had the pleasure of presenting in Bucharest (obviously not in China) a couple of years ago. Would endorse everything that Mark has said especially allowing long pauses for catch up.

If your presentation is not scripted try not to listen to the interpreter or you will quickly lose your thread. If the interpreting is via headphones, don't be put off by the lack of facial expression/feedback from your audience.

I have a mk4 1.3i endura e Fiesta encore I'd like to fit a rev counter (the higher spec clocks) to but I don't know where to take the signal from (the wire that goes to contact number 8 is missing from the multi-plug going into the clocks).

On older Fiestas it is a green wre on the 'e-dis' plug but I don't know where this is on the later version.

Anyone know?

Thanks. Read more

I've noticed a lot of new (55 / 06 plate) VAG cars recently which put a huge amount of black smoke out of the exhaust. Is this a trait of VAG cars?. My diesel never produces any smoke at all, even under hard acceleration. Read more

moonshine {P}

So out of the diesels you have owned half of them are smokey. Your current car only smokes when you floor it, you then go on to say it's driven hard - so it's smokey as well then?

The M51 in the Omega and Range Rover is exactly the same unit as that in the BMW 325tds, 525tds, and 725tds. How can you claim it wasn't good enough for BMW so they sold it to Vauxhall when BMW continued to use it for over 6 years after they sold it to GM and Land Rover.

It was used in E34, E36 during their entire life. It was also used in late E30s and early E39s. BMW used the engine for 9 years.
It was then given a makeover in 2000, this was not fitted to Vauxhalls, but was fitted to Opels on the continent.

IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME ENGINE, even alternator and aircon compressor were same as BMW! The round BMW diagnostic connector is near the alternator and has a plug in it which takes it to the GM socket under the streering wheel.

BMW detuned the ECU for the Omega and Range Rover.
It was considered the best diesel engine in it's day (early nineties), but suffers from the usual lack of attention to detail you get from BMW engines, and it has common points of failure like so many otehr of their engines.

At the end of the day we are talking about a 7 year old car here, with a 14 year old design engine.

It used to work OK. It would remember passwords from one session to the next. Now Firefox seems to sometimes reset itself and forget the passwords I've asked it to save. At first I thought this was just between reboots, but it happens if I close Firefox then re-open it.

I thought I'd fixed it by editing a file last week. it was good for a bit but has reverted now. I have all the settings set correctly and the required passwords are in the password list correctly.

What I have noticed is that occassionally the desktop just refreshes itself. Just as though Explorer has crashed. It may be unrelated.

Firefox is 1.5.0.2.

Any ideas?

PS Sometimes it is also constipated. It will load most pages fine then once in a while it will not load the images on a page, or will load the top two and no more. Related? Read more

>>burn a DVD later on to see what happens!

Make sure the DVD player is JPEG compatible, and a lot of these will recognise folders, and display folder names, but wont show whats in it if its data from pc...no problem with pictures but one folder should only contain around 100 photos.

At least thats how my last one worked, newer and cheaper version will show all, if photos are copied direct to DVD from a folder ie dont copy folder, only photos in that folder direct, takes longer but will show all photos
