Our local garage has been involved in a scam where goods and petrol bought on a credit card have been csimmed and the details and pin numbers have been passed on.Guildford police think that more than 400 people have been effected.More may come to light as people get their statements.Ilost £600 until my credit card company realised something was wrong. So if you have used a garage in the Guildford area recently ie 6-8 weeks ago till now police would like to hear from you.Ican give details of the offending garage if the moderators will allow.

In what way are we all paying for "it"? I've never
had anything misappropriated from my bank account, nor have I ever
had any bank charges of any kind.

No, but you do pay higher retail prices to fund card interchange fees (which pass to the issuers) and the retailers' own losses through fraud recharges (some frauds are a loss to the issuers, some to the retailer, most commonly the internet purchases).

The OFT believes, among other things, that customers who use cash or debit cards subsidise credit card purchasers through higher prices.

Although some interesting information has been posted; re credit cards and fraud, the conversation has drifted somewhat from motoring discussion, and I'm sure there's more than enough advice been posted to *hopefully* give you all the information you need to help combat credit card fraud - therefore thread locked - DD

Evening all,

I've just tried to take the engine oil cap off and basically wrenched the top half off. It's snapped leaving the majority of the cap stuck fast.

Any ideas how to remove it please as (obviously) I need to put some oil in!

Cheers,

Adam

Fixed!

Having tried again this morning and breaking snapping a screwdriver (a cheap one admittedly) I went to Ford in Dad's car, and asked for an oil cap.

Four quid. That was it! I was expecing at least 15 given it had a spring in it but it was only 4 quid. Then, having come out in cold sweats at the prospect of leaving my car in Ford's charge, I took it to my Dad's mate. He came out with the biggest looking pliers you've ever seen, and just wrenched as hard as he could. It creaked. He tried again, and then it came off all in one piece. Fitted the new one and everything's fine now.

Thanks for all the help and advice - I won't look under the bonnet again for another 2 years or so ;-)

Cheers Gents,

Adam

I have a 1998 Peugeot 406 2.1TD. During the past couple of days the cooling fans have been remaining on for a few minutes after the ignition has been turned off and, sometimes while the engine is running, they are both turning at full speed.

The temperature gauge reading is normal (between 70-80) and the engine is not overheating.

Could this be a problem with the fan switch or something else ?

Thankyou for any helpful advice. Read more

Thankyou for the posts.

I'll check the "Bitron" temp sensor.

I have a 2001 model which I believe has self levelling suspension? I purchased the car from a Ford dealer in Belgium. I used to tow a caravan with no problems. Last yaer a mechanic carrying out a pre mot sevice told me he had to replace a rear shock so replaced both but not with Ford parts. Since then my rear suspension is much softer, the car sits about 3 inches lower and the self levelling suspension is not working. When I told him about this he told me the car never had self levelling suspension. I noticed the problem when I drove over road ramps with two people in the rear and the flaps caught the ramp. Can anyone tell me what may be causing the problem and the best course of action to remedy this?

I'm just about to buy my next car and have almost decided that I'm going to ditch diesel after having driven only that in my five years with a licence, and would be interested in the views of nayone who's done the same and regretted/would recommend making this move. The main reason behind the decision is my beleif that generally diesels cost more to maintain and that the only benefit is the fuel economy. I've had diesel previously thanks to initially being a student, and then getting a job which meant travelling over 400 miles just tow ork, without weekend activities. I've got an old 1.8 TD mondeo and am likely to switch to a 1.8 petrol mondeo from around v/w/x reg, as I am now only driving 200 miles to week to work (and gettiing paid more!). My father had a MKI mondeo with a 1.8 petrol and that was fantastic to drive compared to all the diesels I've driven. I'm of the belief that I'm not going to be hit too much harder in the pocket when totting up fuel/maintenance costs at the end of the year, and would like to hear that I'm probably right, providing I find a car in good nick, but will also be grateful to hear from anyone who begs to differ!

Lighten up. It was a light-hearted dig at diesels.

How do I get to the airbag slip ring?

I guess some of you will read the title to this thread and think its a post about "another low life scum illegal immegrant who mows down children while high on drugs"

Well, you would be wrong, its about my dear Mums car.

So here's the story from start to end...

A few years back my Mum bought a new (second hand) car. It needed Tax so she went to the post office and bought a years tax, the PO took the log book and said they would send it to the DVLA. One year later Mum notices that the tax is about to expire and realises that she never got the log book back. After several phone calls to DVLA she managed to buy another years tax although I'm unsure of the exact details.

So lets fast forward another year to the present day. Mum is dead.

The car is sat on the drive, the MOT has expired, the Insurance has expired and the tax has run out. I can't find the log book and a reminder for the tax never arrived. Mum died on Christmas eve and the tax expired at the end of March. I now have the letters of administration so I can deal with her estate. It is possible that the issue with the log book was never sorted out properly and the car may still be registered with the previous owner.

It's been a long time since I've posted on this board, although I read here almost every day. Previous experience has shown me that there is a huge amount of knowledge that you guys (and girls!) are willing to share, so here are my questions...

1 - Should I SORN the car? If so how? Am I liable for a fine?
2 - How do I get a new log book?
3 - What do I do next?
4 - The car is not worth much (I would guess around £800), whats the best way to dispose of it?

Thanks in advance.

BTW - If any smokers want help to quit, I'm happy to share the details of my mother's death with you (privately). I used to be a smoker.....

As for the tax she said

I can't declare SORN as I'm not the registered keeper.

You may not be the registered keeper, but from what you said above about letters of administration I'm assuming that you are an executor of your mother's estate. Whether it still holds today I can't be sure but when my father died 8 years ago DVLA let me transfer ownership of the vehicle and re tax with a covering letter and evidence that I was his executor as the vehicle was still part of his estate that I, as executor, was able to deal with.
Might be worth trying.

this is pretty important and i need to get a definite by 6 tonight, is a bankers draft from say HSBC, lloyds, or halifax as examples, ok to accept as payment for a car sold privately?

the car is selling for £5000 and obviously we need to be 100% this is safe before we release the car.

can they be faked? the buyer is genuine from what i can see but just in case.

Time to put it on Ebay.

Post it tomorrow, Thursday, on a 10 day sale, and it will finish on a Sunday or on Sunday for a 7 day sale). Gives more people more chance to see it, and they'll bid it up on Sunday evening instead of watching Antiques Roadshow, Heartbeta, The Royal etc. Aim to get the sale to finish say 8-9 pm - you can pay a wee bit extra to specify the start time, and it will finish exactly 7/10 days later, to the second.

Don't set the reserve too high, or you will put buyers off. they'll push it quite high enough for you to be very satisfied. I'm assuming that you don't live in West Cornwall, Skye or Inverness.

Take at least 10 photos on a bright day showing all panels, interior, speedo and supporting docs such as MoT and SH. Make it clear they bid to buy, not to come an tyre kick. Look at plenty of car ads on Ebay, and copy their best bits. Put in a obile no. for people to call, as some may want to view. They may even make you an offer on the spot.

Hi

I am looking for a very good car for my dad and I found a Honda Legend as below in the autotrader. My question is, it is worth the money. My dad wants to use the car a lot and would like reliability. What are the problems this car might encounter?

Based on HJ's advice about young but higher mileage, is this too many miles.

'1999 V Reg HONDA Legend 3.5 V6
4 Doors, Automatic, Saloon, Petrol, 98,000 miles, Metallic green with full beige leather trim, 2 Owners. ABS, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Air conditioning, Alloy wheels, Climate control, Computer, Cruise control, Driver airbag, Electric mirrors, Electric windows, Electric sunroof, Foglights, Electrically adjustable seats, Heated seats, Immobiliser, Passenger airbag, Power assisted steering, Remote locking, Side airbags, Radio/CD Multichanger, Full service history.Insurance Group:17, £5,490.'

Many thanks in advance.

For that money you could buy an 02 Volvo S60 with all the toys.

Much more modern car though probably nothing in it reliability wise.

Or what about a less prestige model such as a nice Passat V5.
