>>I would advise the 216 as it's a better (Honda) engine to the K Series IMHO.
Dont confuse,K series 1.6 was only fitted to manual,Not auto, honda unit is the better option but its only fitted to auto.
Not certain if auto existed on Cabs??

To answer OP,only downside of this motor is the engine,or should I say possible HGF/head problems.
Car in itself is a good one, still plenty around cheap and reliable,But as its age makes it somewhat past it,and dare I say (for the price make em worth spending money on if job done properly)if not, you are chasing lost money, which makes em not so worth while.
still seem to sell pretty well due to price, but the engine is the biggest risk factor, rest is no worse on cost than any other car.

Thanks - so am I right is saying that the 1.6 auto is Honda, so OK, and the 1.4 and 1.6 manuals are Ks, and so suspect for HGF?

good cars but buy them as a cheap user and not a long time investment.......

And just think - at least it's better than a Metro convertible!

Steve,
Are you sure? My understanding is that the 1.6 litre K-series didn't appear until the 1996MY when the car got the dashboard from the bubble-shaped 200.
www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?enginekseriesf.htm seems to confirm this.
I think that automatic versions may have continued with the Honda engine after that as in the Civic-based Rover 400/45.
Square-dashed 1.6 cars, N-reg and earlier, *should* therefore have the Honda engine.

TBH DavidHM I have never looked at the 1.6 in any rover, all I have worked on is the 1.4,2.0,-1.6 was never worked on anywhere where I worked.
But 1.6 was always regarded as, as bad as 1.4 by most mechanics I know, point was never made as to whether its K series or Honda unit.
though now you see more 1.4`s around than 1.6,which may say why at least in my area

I am 99.99999% sure that the 1.6 in the cabriolet is Honda, not the K Series. The bubble shaped 200 1.6 was definitely K Series, that's where the confusion sets in.
