Hi All,

My parents recently bought a car from a Chrysler Jeep main dealer, its a year or two old.

Within a week, it had broken down. They supplied a courtesy car and collected the jeep and repaired it. It turned out to be the flywheel, apparently, but the car was returned in working order.

They received a call today from the garage the dealership sent the car to, saying that the car had previously been written off and therefore the warranty was invalid. The explanation given was that the car had been, along with a number of others, exposed to Hurricane like conditions at some point, written off and returned to America.

It would appear the cars were returned to the UK, tidied up and resold. Dad said when looking at the car, he has now found some bolts, and specifically the accelerator and brake pedals to have some rust on them.

He has the Director of the dealership calling him back in the morning, and he's obviously very worried/angry in equal measure.

Any thoughts on his legal rights to return the car?

Thanks

If I read your first post aright, the main dealer was unaware that the car was a write off. If I were the main dealer, I should be furious with my supplier.

As ever, the best approach is to be as charming as you can; sympathise with the dealer; hope for lots of freebies on the replacement car in order to keep mouth shut!

I have just purchased a new set of ignition and door locks with ecu immobiliser relay and diesel pump cut off valve from my local toyota dealership and have fitted them but now the vehicle will not start! Toyota tell me that the ignition keys need to be programmed by they will not give me any info on how to do this despite the locks costing over £400!
Can any one tell me how the keys are programmed?

The vehicle is a 1999 's' reg 2.4 diesel hi ace van.

Many thanks. Craig

They are not allowed to give you the codes,go to a indendant registered locksmith with coding equipment .He is allowed to purchase these codes for your vehicle and should charge you a lot less but still not cheap. The ecu may also need to be programmed as these normally come without any program preinstalled.

There is a very specific cause of that symptom on certain 1.4 engines. Is there some point to your reticence to reveal the model and exact engine type - preferably by engine code.

To replaced by Mr Chris Evans. Now I don't mind the ginger mop, in fact I think he can be excellent, but his style at drive time?? Guess we'll see.

The one from TW that had me rolling up was the email from the secretary of the MG owners club;

" I have been asked to point out that the website X-Rated Midgets contains no useful performance or tuning tips whatsoever".

I have a Vectra where a warranty problem on the fuel system has been so hard to fix I left it with the dealer yesterday for 2 days .The dealer is 15 miles away,, and I am self-emploed, so round-trips are a waste of time and money.
Collecting the car today, they told me the fuel problem was fixed but when I went to the car I found it had been damaged. the cover for the drivers door mirror had gone.It was there yesterday morning.
When I went back after a lot of shuffling abut they looked at the car, then dug out workshop papers which showed the mechanic had noted the missing cover while he had it . But it was not mentioned to me while it was in the garage or when I collected the keys.
I asked to speak to the Service Manager , who said they would get another, paint and fit it. I pointed out it was another round-trip using fuel and time .He wasnt interested in that.
I think they should recompense me as I think the damage is their responsibility. He implied I could have left the car yesterday with the damage done in the hope of now getting it done free by conning them.
I think I'm right- once they have the car, it's in their care. if the damage was done by an employee or another customer is not my problem Read more

They've offered to fix the car, they may or maynot realise they are responsible.

If you took it further I strongly suspect you'd actually get less than what you offered.

Ypu have to put yourselves in their shoes. If you had serviced the car and decided to give the customer the benefit of the doubt about a missing part, it will seem a bit of a kick in the pants if he then tries to extract more out of you. I appraciate that's not how you see it, but that may well be his point of view.

For what it's worth, Which? magazine ranks tyre quality thus (top five from each group, with scores):

17"
Michelin Pilot Sport ("best on test", equal best on wear) 73%
Bridgestone Potenza 71%
Continental SportContact3 70%
BFGoodrich G-Force Profiler 68%
Pirelli Pzero Nero 68%

14"
Bridgestone Turanza ER300 ("best on test", best overall on wet braking) 70%
Pirelli P6 65%
Nokian NRHi 64%
Continental EcoContact 3 63%
Vredestein Hi-Trac 63%

Michelin and Bridgestone prices knock them out of the best-buy stakes, but shop around, of course.

No surprises there, then.

Vredsteins come highly rated in a German auto test report. Available at about 2/3rd's the price of Michelin Energy's, i've bought a pair recently and am about to buy another pair in the next 2 months to replace the Avons fitted to the front of my Mondeo. Cn't fault them, good tyre.

Guys I really need your help! Yesterday morning my prelude 2.2i would not start. It cranks but it will not start. I called the AA and they took a look at my car. The guy checked if there was a spark in the plugs and there was none. He then checked the distributor and said there was no spark there either so it must be gone. He said to get it replaced and I had my suspicions that it may be the distributor since I had had it replaced 6 months back. I just put a new one in today but it still does not start!

The AA guy yesterday also said that it may be the relays. How do I check the relays? What do you use? Also are there any recommendations on what to do? I just checked all fuses and no problems there. There is something weird that happens though: when I turn the headlights on, the display on the dashboard showing petrol level and temperature turns off. It never did that before. When you turn headlights off the display comes back on. All other lights like ABS and other lights work as normal. I am starting to think that if its not the distributor it may be the relays. I had a Prelude a couple of years ago and had the exact same problem, except it started, having left it for an hour or so, before the AA man arrived. On another occassion the AA man towed me to the local Honda dealer, whereupon it started as soon as he'd unhitched it!!
It seems it's a common problem with Preludes, caused by the soldered electrical joints in the relay under the dash, to the right of the steering column, going 'dry'. I recall cold weather exacerbating the problem. You have to get the relay out(a bit of a tight squeeze) open it up & re-solder the joints(carefully). It worked for me ... never had the problem again.
