Hi all

My daughter has recently become interested in cycle racing and competes fairly regularly in races throughout the country. She has a variety of bikes (road, track, mountain bike, cyclocross) which she uses for racing and training.

I have a lexus gs300 which is unsuitable for transporting bikes (tried a rack it takes too long and car/bikes get scratched)and do not want to change it

my wife has a x reg corolla which hardly gets used so I put the bikes in the back but tio be honest it isnt v big and space is tight. I was considering changing the corolla for a larger car but do not want to spend too much money maybe Corolla + cash to equal£5000.

Don't want to use an exterior rack because it takes a long time to load, secure & unload (or maybe Im doin it wrong??)

any suggestions? I thought about an old people carrier, or a large estate

thanks in anticipation

IIRC Which did some research on the most fuel efficient way to transport a bike. Other than inside the vehicle, the best way by far was a tow ball carrier on the rear of a squarish (4x4, small estate) type vehicle.

The topic of transmission fluids often comes up on this forum and I thought I would give a recommendation to a supplier I've been using for the past year or two.

www.specialtyformulations.com/

Its a company in the US run by a lubricants chemist who makes some really top-spec synthetic transmission oils (auto and manual trans) which are pretty cheap by UK standards (even allowing for shipping from the US to UK). I have no connection with this company other than being a very satisfied customer, having had many gallons shipped over! I've just had another two gallons of fully-synth Dexron III delivered at an all-in cost of £27 (pay by PayPal). Took about 2-3 weeks to arrive.

His MTL-P GL-4 fully-synth manual fluid is good for most Japanese manual transmissions and also meets the BMW MTF-LT (lifetime) fluid spec at a much lower cost than BMW charge. A good alternative to Castrol SMX-S too.

'AutoGlide' is a synthetic ATF for manual transmission (e.g. most MB's and some BMW's).

An alternative is to visit your local JCB dealer /ford new
holland dealer with the spec and have a nice surprise when
you compare prices

Yes, I'm sure you can find cheaper. However I'm pretty much convinced about the quality of Speciality Formulations oils and I have used them in a couple of 'problem' gearboxes where they have improved the shift performance quite considerably.

I need a family car that I will probably only drive long distances on weekends and which my wife will drive to the odd shop. I am tossing up between 2 passats and would like your views on which one to choose and why. The first passat is a 51 reg SE model with 70000 miles and the vendor wants £3500. The second is a 02 reg turbo sport with 89000 miles in silver which I prefer and the vendor wants £3800 for. I really liked the turbo sport until I got a quote for the insurance which is about £300 more than the SE. I am also worried with the service bill for the turbo and the cost if something goes wrong with the turbo. Can anyone talk me out of thinking about the turbo? Read more

I think the TDi's are much better to drive and are plenty powerful and quick with decent economy.

My Father in Law's 2004 Fiat Dublo 1.3 Multijet clutch has packed up only after 10,000 miles this week, Fiat say it's a one-off and have never heard it happen before, has anyone else? Read more

pafosman

I thought I was the only one who specified the Doblo with the 1.3 MJ engine! Took delivery June 05 and it has done 11K to date, no probs. It is SWMBO car and is used for school/shopping/dog walking(!) runs. I am a little disappointed in the front tyre wear but bearing in mind the usage and that it is a fairly large vehicle on skinny tyres I guess I can live with it. Let us know how you get on with Fiat. Incidentally, have you worked out what the oil/filter change interval is?

I have a honda civic. The car pull to the left (i.e will change lanes on a motorway in a couple of seconds)

When travelling in a straight line the steering wheel points slightly right (maybe 10 degrees).

Front tyres have been replaced, and wheels swapped round. No Change?

Is this likley to benefit from tracking or 4 Wheel Aligment? What is the correct option for this case? How much should I expect to pay for a check and adjustment? Read more

After eleven years I'd be surprised if you get an answer.

I may be wrong.

On my 1992 Astra SRi estate the ABS sensor hitting the toothed wheel at low speeds and turns causes piercing squeals. I've also heard this on Astra vans. This is not heard at above around 10mph, either the interference ceases or the squeal goes ultra-sonic?

Apart from generally cleaning/de-rusting the sensor and the toothed wheel is there anything else that may be done to eliminate this noise??

THe senor position is non adjustable, naturally.

Basically i'm still trying to find the ALDL box? in order
to determine the fault code.

Is this any help:

www.akirwan.freeserve.co.uk/akhow2/diag_no3.rtf

or

www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/abs_codes/abs_codes.htm

The socket *should* be in the fuse box, and you need to short out pins A & K to read the ABS fault codes.

We are looking to downsize our car (currently have a 53-plate Vectra 1.8 Club which I have hated from day one). The 2 replacements we have narrowed it down to are either a nearly new Getz or Suzuki Swift. We have looked at a Getz and the new shape Swift. I haven't had the chance to test drive the Swift yet but did drive the Getz which I thought drove fairly well. Other than the famous 5 year warranty that would come with the Getz (well the remainder of it anyway), can anyone offer any advice on which one to go for? I must admit we both prefer the Swift, in particular the build quality, styling and interior room, but since the new model has not been out as long, there aren't too many of them about. P.S. Let me know if anyone is interested in my Vectra...!!! :) Read more

* paintwork - still poor quality compared to euro/jap cars. all
hyundais suffer this. expect rust to start appearing after 3 years.
make usre u get it done under the corrosion warranty before
it run's out.

I defy anyone to show me an Accent less than ten years old with significant rust.

EVERY Accent I see around town (and there's a LOT of them in Darlington) is completely clean. The worst one I've seen had rust on the rear sills which appeared to have been caused by quite deep scratches in the paintwork.

I'll grant you though that the paintwork is a bit weak. I have a touch-up pen at the ready for that.

A friend of mine has a ten year old Lantra. Not a trace of rust on it (the sump rusted through but the chassis is pristine).

Does anyone know why a HPI check on the official site (www.hpicheck.com ) is so expensive (£40) when compared to the check (also a HPI check) offered on the ebay site (£6.99). Read more

nathnamdo

I did a quick search of the ebay forum and found the following thread which explains (not fully) the differences between the ebay and original HPI check. forums.ebay.co.uk/thread.jspa?messageID=207125299&...9 . It does seem good value if the car on auction seems at least genuine.

Ok, looking to buy a Mazda6 and the discounts online r much better than local dealers. Bit nervous about handing over deposit.
Had a look at broadspeed and newcar4me (which appears a lot on Honest John). Has anyone used these brokers and what is their view?
Also what chance of the car being supplied by an actual Mazda dealership (broadspeeds referal was to an Autozone4cars which I also know nothing about) ? Read more

I recently had a very good experience using uknewcars.com. Near instant introduction to dealer, price and car exactly as they appeared. Was very good, I would use them again.

I also had good experiences with personalcarfinance.co.uk, who have a great site if you want to compare prices. In the end, they couldn't get me the exact spec I wanted, but communications were very good, and they were completely open about it. If Id wanted the built-in satnav, then their price on that was great.
