The front suspension on my car is making a banging noise when I corner at low speeds. I suspect the strut top bearing needs replacing. I have removed the plastic cap from the top of the strut, and found that the nut which will have to be removed after the spring has been compressed is recessed within the rubber mounting.Since the damper rod will have to be held whilst this nut is being undone, I won't be able to use a socket. Maybe a box spanner could be used. Are there any other ways to overcome this problem? Read more
Hi
My friend has a BMW 318 ci reg 02 with only 30k on clock.
She returned from weeks holiday(car parked at airport) and whislt driving home the car lost all power and battery light came on. The car eventually started again and she return home
She took car into BMW dealer who check battery and alternator. They found battery had low charge so re-charge and said should be ok.
But one day this week whilst driving the battery light came on and the car had no power for a few seconds then it started again. She booked car into dealer again.
Does car need new battery? BMW dealer said alternator ok, so why no power? This is dangerous to lose power especially on a motorway!
Any advise welcome.

I've just read a report that BMW are to offer a new electronic package just for the UK;it disables indicators, the brakes, turns on main beam and foglights as soon as you start the the car and has automatic radar control allowing the vehicle to remain 1mm. behind your back bumper. Read more
You'd have thought that they would also have added a dashboard-mounted hair-gel dispenser on these models also !
I have a Peugeot 306 and am having a problem with the heater as it will only blow cold air. I've flushed out the system, fitted a new thermostat. All control cables are as they should be. Not sure about the resistor as I'm not sure what it does. Any ideas???

the resistor controls the fan speed. try back flushing thr heater matrix if that dont cure it a new matrix is needed
Saw an interesting programme about the development of this car a joint UK/Italian project , led by Peter Stevens.Final assembly in a small UK works.
Carbon fibre body , tuned mid/front mounted Ford Mustang engine.
Has this project collapsed with the rest of Rover or continued under a separate name?

My car was broken into last night, a 96-n Rover 414. They unsucessfully attempted to steal the original rover stereo and at the same time push the separate display into the dash. why bother stealing a 10 year old radio? Are these chavs stupid? Or is there some massive underground market for old radios? Read more
>>can you replace the plastic cover on the instrument panel or do you have to replace the whole unit?
IIRC you have to replace whole unit, should be able to get one from breakers around £10/15,but beware of when changing-do as manual says due to airbag on steering wheel

Much to my embarrasment. In a heavy flurry of snow this morning, I managed to slew SWMBO's car (Vectra) into the kerb. After this little incident, terrible noise/ vibration through the steering wheel. Managed to get it to work, but the NSF wheel looks buckled.
Befor I broach the subject of my idiocy with SWMBO, what damage can I expect to have done? It was a low speed impact, but I think the wheel was pretty much side on at impact (as opposed to 'tread on'). Have I got away fairly lightly, or is it chocolates and flowers time?

Quick update. It's an insurance job. A mechanic had a look, shook his head woefully and suggested contacting the insurers. He seemed to think the sub-frame could be slightly twisted. Hats off though to Direct Line. Within an hour of the phone call, the car was at their approved repairers being assesed. Should be ready by the end of the week.
On to more serious matters, SWMBO took it all rather well. She gets to drive my car around all week while I use one of our 'removal' vehicles, which is, er, ....a vectra estate.
