On my 1992 Astra SRi estate the ABS sensor hitting the toothed wheel at low speeds and turns causes piercing squeals. I've also heard this on Astra vans. This is not heard at above around 10mph, either the interference ceases or the squeal goes ultra-sonic?
Apart from generally cleaning/de-rusting the sensor and the toothed wheel is there anything else that may be done to eliminate this noise??
THe senor position is non adjustable, naturally.

Or is it the brake pads squealing?
Very surprised if it's the sensors hitting the tootheed wheel. The sensors are quite delicate and it doesn't take much to damage them.
If it turns out that it is, then yes, a clean up of the toothed wheel *should* resolve it. IIRC, the tollerance gap between the sensor and toothed wheel is approx 1mm, so there must be one heck of an amount of crud built up for them to interfere with one another.

Thanks Dave
Last time I looked there appeared to be circumferential scratches on the face of the teeth.
The 'squealing' does not occur very often and not in a recognisable pattern, except only at slow speeds and more so in colder, freezing weather. It may that it occurs after the car has been standing for some time and the wheel bearings cause sufficient movement to cause interference? wheel bearing checks seem OK.
In another twist, recently the ABS fault life has been on after these last few, below freezing nights, but restoring to fault-free condition during the day..I haven't bottomed out the cause yet.
Basically i'm still trying to find the ALDL box? in order to determine the fault code.

IIRC?

The ALDL plug is in the fuse box on mkIII Astras.

Is this any help:
www.akirwan.freeserve.co.uk/akhow2/diag_no3.rtf
or
www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/abs_codes/abs_codes.htm
The socket *should* be in the fuse box, and you need to short out pins A & K to read the ABS fault codes.
