Hi

I wondered if anyone could offer me any advise, I currently have an W Reg Petrol VW Polo which till recently drove perfectly. However lately Ive been finding that I can be going along and the car will suddenly lunge then the rev counter wont go over 3000 revs, I've also occationally started having problems with it turning over first time (not sure if this is perhaps connected)but it's like the car is going into a safety mode. I've taken it into a local garage where they've carried out a diagnostic check however they havent been able to solve the problem - this is causing me some serious upset and stress as I bet anyone can understand so I would seriously appreciate any ideas as to what could be the possible cause. Getting tracking done in a tyre fitting place is robbery for the time it takes them. Is their any way to do this yourself without all the fancy equipment? I once did it myself but can't remember. If anyone can refer me to a link on the subject that would be a start. Read more

Can't find my old sliding set of small bore copper tubes for my heath robinson tracking method, so recently treated myself to one of these www.trackace.co.uk/Trackace.html

Took a few minutes to get me head round it, and the 16" wheels shod with 75 aspect tyres on the Landcruiser were about as large as you could reasonably expect the thing to operate, but i'm impressed with the results, as expected by the wear on the fronts she was towing in too much, not now.

I'd like to know whether my son (age 14) can be the legal owner of a motor vehicle - perhaps also being listed as the Registered Keeper.

Had a few discussions with the guys at work, and we couldn't agree whether children actually 'own' anything at all - particularly items previously owned by their parent(s). Read more

Yes minors can own

cars but can not insure them.

So if a minor inherited a car, and kept it on part of the highway until he was old enough to drive it, he would be committing no offence by not insuring it?

Seen postings on this topic before and wondered what the current state of play was regarding the all to familiar problem of water ingress in VW Passats? Vehicle is a V reg 1.8T Passat Estate, 100k miles. Problem is water is comming in from somewhere and saturating carpets on drivers side front and rear. Originally manifested as alarm fault approx two years ago and at vast expense (>£1K)the VW dealer 'fixed' the problem. Carpets saturated and wiring rotted through. Carpets dried, wiring replaced along with pollen filter and seemed OK.

However carpets now saturated in even lightest rain shower and at a loss as to where the water is comming in and what to do about it? Other sites/bulletin boards suggest drains blocked under battery, or, sun roof rain channels blocked or pollen filter housing leaking-but pollen filter is on passenger side. I'd love to keep the car as otherwise its been OK, but as have young children in the car, unless someone out there can come up with a solution, it has to go.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the info.

My mech had a look at the drainage chambers under the battery and rodded them with a coat hanger and jet washed them through. He reports them as clear. Took the car through a car wash today and lifted the bonnet to see where the residue of bubbles were-bubbles+water=indication of where the water is sitting? Found an accumulation arround the gasket relating to the bonnet release handle cable where it comes through the fire wall into the engine compartment. Anyone had any experience of water ingress at this point?

Also other bulletin boards seem to be suggesting that accross the board VW are great for metal work but woeful regards rubber gaskets etc.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I drove a Ford C-Max today, and it had an electronic parking brake. I've never come across one before, and wondered if anyone had any thought about these, on reliability or otherwise. Perhaps I'd get used to it, but it seemed more controllable to hold the car on an incline using a handbrake.

Also, what would happen if, as on my Mondeo, I had a failure of several electronic components, losing use of indicators, door locks and horn. Read more

I have driven many rental cars in mainland Europe with these new ?Electronic? parking brakes, (VW, Audi, Renault are the main ones). I think they are all rubbish on manual shift cars as it makes hill starting etc. very difficult. They are probably OK on an Automatic car.

The Renaults are the worst offenders. As soon as you turn the engine off the brake comes on automatically. The VW/Audis are better in that they do not come on automatically. With the VAG cars I just park in gear with the handbrake off in case they stick, (very worried about the cold in Germany in January when it was -25C).

I still prefer the ?standard? type and might not choose a car because it has an ?Electronic? brake!

The Matiz is not a 'GM' engine

Sorry for any misleading information. As previously stated though, I've only seen under the bonnet of a Lanos, which looked like the Astra powerplant.

Hello,

2002(02) Corsa 1389cc Auto.
The problem occurs when the engine is warm and is switched off for short to medium periods of time, ie. petrol station, this afternoon it occured after a 45 minute shopping trip. The car will struggle to start and probably will not unless given a lot of gas, the engine sounds like it is going to turn over but struggles to and when it eventually does (sometimes 3 or 4 goes)it runs like a dream. It is possible to get it to start on the first go if you get it right with the gas but even then you can hear it struggling. This does not happen all the time, but its getting increasingly more frequent recently.

Any ideas? Some sort of sensor?

Many thanks. Read more

I recently experienced this problem with my 03 Astra. My problem was the Throttle Response Valve. I left mine with this problem through most of the winter and one morning I filled up with fuel my car started but my ABS, Traction Control and Throttle had given up the ghost.

It has been repaired under warranty and I was told it was one of those many common faults with vauxhall!

First time on the forum, so please be gentle with me.
I've got a VW Passat, 110 Tdi, V reg, just before they switched to the PD engine. So far 144k miles. Oil changes every 5 - 7k miles, with decent synthetic oil, mainly motorway driving (50 miles to work every day). So far it's excellent. Any ideas what I need to look out for, especially engine wise over the next (hopefully) 100k miles. Is it realistic to expect it to do 200k ?
Thanks in anticipation. Read more

As the title suggests, can anyone tell me whether the Toyota 2.0 D4D engine in a 2005 Avensis has a cambelt or chain?

I did check the list which is what brought about my question. The list doesn't clearly (or unclearly) state that the diesel in the MINI is from the Yaris, and I didn't know that the Yaris was the only Toyota model to use that engine so I couldn't have come to that conclusion without further information.

I know I know! It's a Mondeo but what are the pitfalls of these cars?

We had a V6 Mk 1 which we owned from new but only for a year so not really a fair indication of the car itself.

Any glaring problems with these? Also, given the fact it's a mark 2, it's going to handle like a pig I imagine. Any relatively easy ways of stiffening if up a little?

I'd be looking at one ideally with less than 60k on but age wouldn't be a problem. (Obviously the newer the better though).

Go on - talk me out of it.

I was hoping you weren't going to suggest a scrappy. Like I said, I could basically have my pick of ST's but GhiaX's are few and far between. Mind you, maybe the situation will change before I actually come to buy one.

Rob,

The Mk3 Mondeo had crossed my mind. It has to be a V6 though. Must be otherwise I'd buy what I've got now again. The problem is, I keep thinking "Well if I just had a grand extra" and then "Well if I just had 1,000 pounds more" etc etc and then I end up with needing to spend loads. I really want to keep the initial costs down. After seeing my mate take 16 grand out on finance for an 02 plate TT, I've realised that's exactly what I don't want to do.

And I have driven a few diesels. Not for me at the minute I'm afraid. Maybe when I'm married but for the time being it's petrol for a good while yet!
