Porsche and BMW 4x4's are for posing, not pursuit.
Admittedly not a 1.4 that TVM refers to, but from my motorcycle a distance back I watched a Porsche Cayenne Turbo wobble and lurch all over the road trying to keep up with the Clio Sport (a 170 I recall) cornering on rails in front and eking out an ever bigger gap. This was on a sweeping A-road, too, not even a twisty B-road on which the gap would have been even bigger.
Hi ,
My Dad has owned a Xantia LX Turbo diesel 1995 for six months, when we went to change the brakes we noticed it has ABS sensors fitted to each wheel. We did not think the car had ABS. We checked the manual and it says all xantias have ABS fitted.
There are no warning lights on the dash or any problems with the brakes (except no ABS) will this fail the MOT as it booked in next week.
Any help will be great.
Thanks. Read more
RichardW said"The ABS is Bosch or Teeves - no reason it should be more or less unreliable than that on any other car fitted with the same system. Some of the early cars had slightly lightweight ECUs that were prone to throwing in the towel, but later ones seem better"
But the wiring was Citroen's and I believe a lot of problems are caused by the cheap and nasty wiring/connectors Citroen use.

Thought that I'd try to sell my Passat via Autotrader on line so I took a few photos of it on Sunday and posted it for two weeks at £16.
The phone has gone every night this week with firms contacting me claiming that they have buyers waiting etc etc. Now I have received this: -
Hello mate,

side + rear window........then choose a large busy supermarket or similar(free)carpark
and park it up early on saturday morning somewhere prominant where
most people will walk past on their way into the store.
Leave the car there all day.
My local Tesco now has ANPR cameras - park there for more than a few hours and your likely to be charged somewhere in the region of £75 (IIRC) - that could be a big chunk of your 'profit'

ive been driving my vauxhall zafira today and have noticed that it seems to be a bit slugish as if you have to put your foot down to keep the thing moving was wondering if any one had any ideas Read more

Does it crunch if you put your foot on the clutch for a second or two before you put it in reverse?
If it makes no difference, then new clutch required.
VW state in the mk 3 manual to depress clutch first, leave for a second or two then put into reverse.
The fuel gauge normally shows a totally incorrect reading, and I use the odometer to give me an idea of the level in the tank.
I changed the fuel sender/float in the fuel tank but this has made no difference.
There is probably a bad contact some where (you can sometimes see the gauge moving as if this is the case) but I cannot find it.
Anybody got an idea? It would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers. R

The drive can break if the cambelt is too slack resulting
in a vibration transmitting along the camshaft. Just like the distributor
drive breaks for the same reason on petrol models....
Not only the drive can break, but I've also seen a couple of snapped camshafts on these engines.
The first one I saw caught me out a little bit, it was a Manta. I took the cam belt cover off and asked my apprentice to spin the car over on the starter - everything looked OK. I turned the crank; all the marks lined up. Why wouldn't this car start?
I spent some time double checking that the spark and fuel were OK. On these, the distributor was driven off the front of the cam by a small toothed belt, so the spark, and spark timing were fine.
Eventually, I took the cam cover off, and initially didn't see anything wrong. All of the valves, springs, and rockers present and correct. It was only when I asked the apprentice to buzz the engine over again when I saw the camshaft remain still! It had failed imediately behind the first bearing. This was back in the time when these engines were notorious for munching through camshafts, and the cam which had failed was one of the cheapie non-genuine ones. Where there should have been a generous fillet between the bearing journal and the shaft proper, there was a sharp corner, from where the failure had initiated.
The second time I saw one, it didn't take me quite so long to find!

I'm currently working in a very mind numbing IT post. I'm capable of much more, (I won't bore you with details) but I'm starting to see IT as a bit of a dead end. (Typical - I grew up with "Ooh you'll be able to make lots of money when you're older", as I've been into computers for as long as I can remember.)
Anyway. I'm deliberately not going to give much detail so that people don't rule anything out.
I'm very interested in cars, motorbikes, computers, and computer systems (Even down to car ECU's etc.)
I know that a lot of BRer's (!) are intelligent and/or have interesting sounding jobs.
So, if you can - Suggest me a job that you think would cover my interests/knowledge.

PU - if you get the opportunity, go see the 'Round The Horne Revisited' stage show - amazing that five people on a stage reading thirty year old radio scripts is still hilarious - says a lot about the quality of the writing
